Nos Hurricane Preparedness Summit 2021 Report, Coastal Response Research Center
Coastal Response Research Center
On June 21 and 23, 2021, CRRC and DPP co-sponsored a virtual event entitled “NOS Hurricane Preparedness Summit.” The purpose of the summit was to put NOAA in a better posture for the 2021 hurricane season by identifying current best practices, lessons learned, and future challenges. Participants represented academia, federal, state, and local agencies. The two-day summit included plenary presentations from academics, federal and state agency representatives outlining: preparedness, response, and virtual and in-person incident command lessons learned; emergency support function (ESF) 3/10 response gaps; the NOAA/FEMA perspective to hurricane preparedness and response; managing pandemic fatigue; unreliability and/or loss of …

The Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria is responsible for the highest number of lives lost in Africa in the past decade. The country has witnessed significant violations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Nigeria has signed and ratified. For instance, Nigeria had the second-highest number of children recruited to armed groups and the third-highest number of abductions in 2018. Current humanitarian efforts primarily target camps for internally displaced persons, while state strategies focus mainly on addressing security through combatant-targeted interventions. However, there is a need for more rights-based, integrated, and multifaceted approaches to …

Effects Of Timber Harvest On Epigeous Fungal Fruiting Patterns And Community Structure In A Northern Hardwood Ecosystem, Benjamin W. Borgmann-Winter, Ryan B. Stephens, Anthony W. D'Amato, Serita D. Frey, Rebecca J. Rowe
Faculty Publications
Epigeous fungal fruiting has important impacts on fungal reproduction and ecosystem function. Forest disturbances, such as timber harvest, impact moisture, host availability, and substrate availability, which in turn may drive changes in fungal fruiting patterns and community structure. We surveyed mushrooms in 0.4 ha patch cuts (18 months post-harvest) and adjacent intact hardwood forest in northern New Hampshire, USA, to document the effects of timber harvest on summer fruiting richness, biomass, diversity, and community structure of ectomycorrhizal, parasitic, and saprobic mushroom taxa. Fungal fruiting richness, diversity, and community heterogeneity were greater in intact forests than patch cuts. Among functional groups, …

Infant Mortality And Race In The United States, Katherine Legier
Infant Mortality And Race In The United States, Katherine Legier
Perspectives
Infant mortality is globally recognized as an indicator for overall health in a population. The United States spends the most money per capita on health expenditures, a total of 17.1% of the budget in 2016 (cia.gov). Despite this, the United States’ ranking for infant mortality is 174th (cia.gov). Moreover, rates of infant mortality are not experienced equally across racial groups. The rate of infant mortality for African Americans in the United States is compounded. African American infants are more than 2 times as likely to die before their first birthday than non-Hispanic white infants (West and Bartkowski 2019:1). The purpose …

The Impact Of Hyper-Connection Through Smartphone Usage On Friendship Satisfaction In College Students, Sarah Bell
The Impact Of Hyper-Connection Through Smartphone Usage On Friendship Satisfaction In College Students, Sarah Bell
Perspectives
This literature review explores smartphone use among college students. It examines how this usage creates hyper-connection, which is the state of being available for communication anywhere and at any time. I will examine the effects of hyper-connection on the well-being of college students. Hyper-connection is operationalized through the lens of constant availability, fear of missing out, friendship satisfaction, and face-to-face interactions. Furthermore, I will discuss the cyclical nature of the relationships between these variables. The conclusion outlines the limitations of current research and possibilities for future research in this area.
The Effects Of Stress And Socioeconomic Status On Prescription Opioid Misuse, Kylee Jedraszek
The Effects Of Stress And Socioeconomic Status On Prescription Opioid Misuse, Kylee Jedraszek
Perspectives
Within the past few decades, there has come to be an abundance of literature on prescription opioid misuse and how stress and socioeconomic status directly correlate with rates of misuse. The purpose of this literature review is to analyze the relationship between stress, socioeconomic status, and prescription opioid misuse. For the purposes of this literature review, the phrase “prescription opioid misuse” will refer to opioids prescribed to an individual, whether the individual has their own prescription or whether they obtain them illegally, and uses them somewhat habitually in ways other than for their directed use or in their prescribed dosage …
The “American Dream” In Black And White Populations: A Perceptions Versus Reality Analysis, Emma Watts
The “American Dream” In Black And White Populations: A Perceptions Versus Reality Analysis, Emma Watts
Perspectives
Do White and Black Americans equally believe in the American Dream? Does the American Dream offer hope for Black Americans to hold on to, or has racial oppression made the dream feel out of reach? Since such ideas, like the promise of social mobility offered by freedom, motivate and inform economic, social, and political beliefs, understanding how such narratives function is of critical need. In this study, I used the 2012 Outlook on Life Survey (N=2,294) to analyze the differences in attitudes about the American Dream between Black and White populations in the United States. I analyzed data about how …

Aerosol intercomparisons are inherently complex as they convolve instrument-dependent detection efficiencies vs. size (which often change with pressure, temperature, or humidity) and variations in the sampled aerosol population, in addition to differences in chemical detection principles (e.g., inorganic-only nitrate vs. inorganic plus organic nitrate for two instruments). The NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom) spanned four separate aircraft deployments which sampled the remote marine troposphere from 86∘ S to 82∘ N over different seasons with a wide range of aerosol concentrations and compositions. Aerosols were quantified with a set of carefully characterized and calibrated instruments, some based on particle sizing and …

Scaling Equitable Solar Finance, Eric Hangen, Rebecca Regan, Sarah Boege
Carsey Publications
The U.S. solar photovoltaics industry has taken off over the past decade, but without deliberate action low- and moderate-income communities could be left behind in the transition to clean energy.
Drawing on substantial literature related to multiple dimensions of low-income solar finance and interviews with key informants in the field, authors Eric Hangen, Rebecca Regan, and Sarah Boege recommend public investments and policy changes that could help scale the provision of equitable solar finance.

Granite Staters Increasingly Comfortable In Public; Majority Support Vaccine Mandate In Colleges & High Schools 5/19/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Majorities of New Hampshire residents support requiring students at public universities, colleges, and high schools in the state to be vaccinated in order to attend school in-person. State residents are increasingly comfortable participating in activities in public, with large increases since March in the number comfortable eating indoors at restaurants. Despite this, Granite Staters report only slightly lower stress stemming from COVID-19 than in December and mask usage has declined only slightly since December when the mask mandate was still in place.

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Due to the efficient propagation of sound in water, sound in the deep ocean propagates such great distances that soundscapes are influenced not only by local conditions but also by distant sound sources. Ocean Sound is now an Essential Ocean Variable within the Global Ocean Observing System making passive acoustic monitoring routine. Active acoustic probing of the environment informs us about ocean topography, currents and temperature, and abundance and type of marine life vital to fisheries and biodiversity related interests.
Efficient sound propagation is the foundation of a proposed multipurpose acoustic network. Judiciously placed low-frequency acoustic sources transmitting to globally …
