The Impact Of Seasonal Movements By Ovigerous American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) On Egg Development And Larval Release, Jason Seth Goldstein Jan 2012

The Impact Of Seasonal Movements By Ovigerous American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) On Egg Development And Larval Release, Jason Seth Goldstein

Doctoral Dissertations

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) supports one of the most economically successful fisheries in the Gulf of Maine. The continued success of this fishery is attributed in part to vigilant broodstock conservation through the preservation of ovigerous (egg-bearing) females. Previous studies of ovigerous lobster movements indicate that some, if not most, display seasonal inshore-to-offshore movement patterns. While it has been assumed that these movements serve to expose eggs to thermal regimes that are optimal for development, this theory has never been rigorously tested. In Chapter 1, I present results from ultrasonic tracking studies designed to determine if lobsters in coastal …

1960s Travel Fiction And Englishness During The Postimperial Turn, Matthew J. Hurwitz Jan 2012

1960s Travel Fiction And Englishness During The Postimperial Turn, Matthew J. Hurwitz

Doctoral Dissertations

British travel writing has for centuries helped to construct English identity in relation to its others. The traditional function of travel narratives to define Englishness, however, faced a fundamental crisis of meaning when the British Empire starting falling apart after WWII. This crisis emerged as an explicit literary subject in several key 1960s novels: John Fowles's The Magus (1965), V. S. Naipaul's The Mimic Men (1967), and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). In these three novels, Fowles, Naipaul and Rhys critique British imperialism by engaging and reinventing the travel narrative form. Although many British writers publishing during the 60s …

Shifting Alliances And Fairweather Friends: Luso-American Relations, 1941--1951, Paula Celeste Gomes Noversa. Rioux

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the diplomatic relations between Portugal and the United States from 1941 to 1951, a decade that resulted in a tremendous and permanent shift in Luso-American relations. It examines the wartime and postwar goals of both Portugal and the United States. It reveals how these two nations overcame their differences during the war and worked towards mutually beneficial ends after the war. Moreover this dissertation asserts that Antonio Salazar, Portugal's Prime Minister, permanently altered Portuguese-American relations and managed to supplant the assurances found in the flagging AngloPortuguese alliance with a series of American initiatives--the European Recovery Program, the …

Student Science Achievement And The Integration Of Indigenous Knowledge In The Classroom And On Standardized Tests, Juliann Benson Jan 2012

Student Science Achievement And The Integration Of Indigenous Knowledge In The Classroom And On Standardized Tests, Juliann Benson

Doctoral Dissertations

In science education, there has been little research focused on indigenous students' achievement on science standardized tests when indigenous knowledge is integrated into the test questions. However, there has been an increased amount of research investigating the impact of culturally relevant curriculum adaptations on indigenous students' achievement in standardized assessments (Aikenhead, 1997, 2001b; Barnhardt, 2005b).

This dissertation examines the achievement gap that is present between American Indian and White students in Montana. I use data from Montana eighth-grade standardized state science tests to determine whether incorporating indigenous material into classrooms and on state standardized science tests supported these initiatives and …

A Multi-Temporal Image Analysis Of Habitat Modification In The Coastal Watershed, Nh, Meghan Graham Maclean Jan 2012

A Multi-Temporal Image Analysis Of Habitat Modification In The Coastal Watershed, Nh, Meghan Graham Maclean

Doctoral Dissertations

Habitat modification has become a progressively important concern as human populations increase and urbanization continues to replace natural environments with anthropogenic landscapes. Habitat modification concerns both the loss and fragmentation of environments, and these actions can have profound effects on ecosystem function, including increasing the potential of invasion by exotic species in vulnerable landscapes. The Coastal Watershed of New Hampshire (NH) has seen a 52% growth in population over the last 30 years which has led to marked urbanization and land use change. However, little has been done to study current land cover types, levels of fragmentation, and how fragmentation …

A Geo-Database For Potentially Polluting Marine Sites And Associated Risk Index, Giuseppe Masetti Jan 2012

A Geo-Database For Potentially Polluting Marine Sites And Associated Risk Index, Giuseppe Masetti

Master's Theses and Capstones

The increasing availability of geospatial marine data provides an opportunity for hydrographic offices to contribute to the identification of "Potentially Polluting Marine Sites" (PPMS).

To adequately manage these sites, a PPMS Geospatial Database (GeoDB) application was developed to collect and store relevant information suitable for site inventory and geo-spatial analysis. The benefits of structuring the data to conform to the Universal Hydrographic Data Model (IHO S-100) and to use the Geographic Mark-Up Language (GML) for encoding are presented. A storage solution is proposed using a GML-enabled spatial relational database management system (RDBMS). In addition, an example of a risk index …

Detection Of Trehalose In Porphyra Extracts Using Mass Spectrometry And Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Ying Huo Jan 2012

Detection Of Trehalose In Porphyra Extracts Using Mass Spectrometry And Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Ying Huo

Master's Theses and Capstones

It is known that trehalose helps many plants to survive under desiccated environment26. This property of trehalose has also been proposed to explain why Porphyra could survive desiccation when left on dry land for a long period of time25. However, after extensive study25, effort at identifying trehalose in Porphyra has been unsuccessful, leaving the question of whether trehalose really exists in Porphyra unanswered. In my thesis research, in collaboration with Dr. Anita Klein, I set out to use ion-trap mass spectrometry and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry to identify and quantify the amount of trehalose in Porphyra extracts. Using …

An Empirical Study Of Image Processing Methods For Land Cover Classification And Forest Cover Change Detection In Northeastern Oregon's Timber Resource-Dependent Communities (1986-2011), Michael James Campbell

Master's Theses and Capstones

A study was performed to evaluate remote sensing methods for classifying land cover and land cover change throughout a two-county area in Northeastern Oregon (1986-2011). In the past three decades, this region has seen significant changes in forest management -- changes that can be readily identified from the synoptic perspective. This study employs an accuracy assessment-based empirical approach to test a number of advanced digital image processing techniques that have recently emerged in the field of remote sensing. The accuracies are assessed using traditional and area-based error matrices. It was determined that, for single-time land cover classification, Bayes pixel-based classification …

Internet Use And Sense Of Community Among Rural Adolescents, Rebecca Benson Jan 2012

Internet Use And Sense Of Community Among Rural Adolescents, Rebecca Benson

Master's Theses and Capstones

There is currently a debate about the way Internet use affects community outcomes. Some suggest positive effects while others propose negative effects. The current study seeks to add to this discussion by using two waves of data to examine how frequency and type of Internet use affect sense of community in a sample of rural youth. Competing hypotheses are posed---Internet use will increase sense of community and Internet use will decrease sense of community. Using data from the Rural Youth Study, results indicate mixed effects of Internet use on sense of community dimensions, community attachment, support and emotional connection with …

Comparison And Evaluation Of Global Publicly Available Bathymetry Grids In The Arctic, Anastasia S. Abramova

Master's Theses and Capstones

In this study we evaluate the differences between six publicly available bathymetry grids in different regions of the Arctic. The independent, high-resolution and accuracy multibeam sonar derived grids are used as a ground truth against which the analyzed grids are compared. The specific bathymetry grids assessed, IBCAO, GEBCO 1 minute, GEBCO_08, ETOPO1, SRTM30_Plus, and Smith and Sandwell, are separated into two major Types: Type A, grids based solely on sounding data sources, and Type B, grids based on sounding data combined with gravity data. The differences were evaluated in terms of source data accuracy, depth accuracy, internal consistency, presence of …

An Investigation Of Two Methods For Assessing The Vertical Structure Of Forest Stands, Daniel S. Maynard Jan 2012

An Investigation Of Two Methods For Assessing The Vertical Structure Of Forest Stands, Daniel S. Maynard

Master's Theses and Capstones

In this study we investigate the limitations of two methods for assessing forest structure: vertical point sampling with a camera and laser point quadrat sampling. Vertical point sampling with a camera is a method by which the height squared per unit area of a forest can be quickly estimated. First, we derive the bias incurred for failing to adjust for slope when implementing this sampling method, and we show that slope can generally be ignored as long as the majority of sample points occur on slopes less than 35 degrees. In the second part of this study we outline the …

Changes In New Hampshire’S Republican Party: Evolving Footprint In Presidential Politics, 1960-2008, Dante J. Scala

Carsey Publications

This brief describes a series of dramatic changes in New Hampshire's political landscape over the past four decades. Examining presidential elections from 1960 to 2008, author Dante Scala uncovers a series of significant shifts in New Hampshire's political geography at the county level. He reports that historically Republican counties Grafton and Merrimack have both tilted Democratic consistently in recent decades and that New Hampshire has become less Republican overall. All of these changes have impacted not just general elections in New Hampshire, but the Republican presidential primary as well.

Another Dimension From Lidar – Obtaining Foliage Density From Full Waveform Data, Thomas Adams, Peter Beets, Christopher Parrish

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

LiDAR tells the user where surfaces are, not what they are. In this study we investigate the potential for waveform LiDAR to provide more information on the nature of the returns over forestry. Waveform LiDAR was acquired for ten Pinus radiata plots in a New Zealand plantation, along with comprehensive leaf area sampling in 2m vertical bands. The decay rate of each waveform peak was shown to be a useful tool for estimating foliage density, and has potential for identifying regions containing ground and understorey. Leaf Area Density (LAD) is an expression of foliage density per unit height, and a …
