One third of Granite State residents are less likely to travel abroad due to recent terrorist attacks in other countries. A majority of New Hampshire residents continue to think the country is headed in the wrong direction.

A majority of Granite State likely voters believe the Senate should hold a vote on Supreme Court appointee Merrick Garland and two in five likely voters say Ayotte’s position that the Senate should wait until the next president is elected to confirm a nominee has made them less likely to vote for her. Election: 2016

[Symposium Remarks By Unh Professor Of History David Bachrach, April 12, 2016 ], David Bachrach

Speaker Remarks

Magna Carta did not emerge de novo in its fully fledged state in the late spring of 1215. The list of baronial demands, made on behalf of the kingdom as a whole, were born out of grievances that, in some cases, dated back more than a century. University of New Hampshire Professor of History David Bachrach discusses several key clauses of the Magna Carta as well as why this document was a touchstone for major political change.

Autonomous Learning Through Task-Based Instruction In Fully Online Language Courses, Lina Lee Apr 2016

Autonomous Learning Through Task-Based Instruction In Fully Online Language Courses, Lina Lee

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

This study investigated the affordances for autonomous learning in a fully online learning environment involving the implementation of task-based instruction in conjunction with Web 2.0 technologies. To that end, four-skill-integrated tasks and digital tools were incorporated into the coursework. Data were collected using midterm reflections, post-surveys and final interviews from two online elementary language courses. The results indicate that the types of tasks and digital tools utilized fostered learner autonomy in different ways. Structured tasks enabled students to work independently to create content, whereas open-ended tasks allowed them more freedom in exploring the understanding of a particular topic through social …

Film Adaption And Transnational Cultures Or Production: The Case Of Guillermo Arriaga, Daniel Chavez Apr 2016

Film Adaption And Transnational Cultures Or Production: The Case Of Guillermo Arriaga, Daniel Chavez

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

The circulation of Latin American cinema in a transnational context has widened the options that actors and directors from the region have regarding their involvement in the different aspects of film production. In order to analyze Guillermo Arriaga’s transnational career as a writer of novels and screenplays I contrast his work with that of other writers and filmmakers who have participated in both the cinematic and literary fields. The fact that Arriaga has crossed the lines between writing, adapting, and directing his own works in Spanish and English leads me to review the current relations of film and literature in …

Unilateral Invasions Of Privacy, Roger Allan Ford Apr 2016

Unilateral Invasions Of Privacy, Roger Allan Ford

Law Faculty Scholarship

Most people seem to agree that individuals have too little privacy, and most proposals to address that problem focus on ways to give those users more information about, and more control over, how information about them is used. Yet in nearly all cases, information subjects are not the parties who make decisions about how information is collected, used, and disseminated; instead, outsiders make unilateral decisions to collect, use, and disseminate information about others. These potential privacy invaders, acting without input from information subjects, are the parties to whom proposals to protect privacy must be directed. This Article develops a theory …

The Patent Spiral, Roger Allan Ford Apr 2016

The Patent Spiral, Roger Allan Ford

Law Faculty Scholarship

Examination — the process of reviewing a patent application and deciding whether to grant the requested patent — improves patent quality in two ways. It acts as a substantive screen, filtering out meritless applications and improving meritorious ones. It also acts as a costly screen, discouraging applicants from seeking low-value patents. Yet despite these dual roles, the patent system has a substantial quality problem: it is both too easy to get a patent (because examiners grant invalid patents that should be filtered out by a substantive screen) and too cheap to do so (because examiners grant low-value nuisance patents that …

Thinking Outside The Box: Using Computer Science Skills To Make Sense Of The Biology Of Life, Lina L. Faller Apr 2016

Thinking Outside The Box: Using Computer Science Skills To Make Sense Of The Biology Of Life, Lina L. Faller

Inquiry Journal 2016

While I liked coding and the logical aspects of computer programming, my gut was telling me I hadn't quite found my niche yet. In what field could my computer science skills make a difference while also providing me with challenging problems to solve? As these questions percolated through my subconscious, I came across a brief article about a field called “bioinformatics.”

A Good Life In Old Age: Accommodating Elderly Patients' Values And Motivations In The Thai Healthcare System, Jennie Lynn Marinucci Apr 2016

A Good Life In Old Age: Accommodating Elderly Patients' Values And Motivations In The Thai Healthcare System, Jennie Lynn Marinucci

Inquiry Journal 2016

People over age sixty-five are the fastest growing segment of the population in most developed and developing nations and their healthcare problems are placing strains on healthcare systems. An added complication for healthcare providers is that elderly populations carry with them a variety of culturally-specific views surrounding the aging process, so it's hard to standardize care for the elderly globally, and also within individual countries. Addressing cultural difference in gerontology policy and practice therefore requires defining "aging well" or "a good life in old age" in the eyes of the elderly. This study used Thailand's healthcare system as a model …
