Psychology Faculty Research

Many foundational questions in the psychology of music require cross-cultural approaches, yet the vast majority of work in the field to date has been conducted with Western participants and Western music. For cross-cultural research to thrive, it will require collaboration between people from different disciplinary backgrounds, as well as strategies for overcoming differences in assumptions, methods, and terminology. This position paper surveys the current state of the field and offers a number of concrete recommendations focused on issues involving ethics, empirical methods, and definitions of “music” and “culture.”

Changing The Paradigm In Armenia-Diaspora Relations: State-Centered Institutions And Transnational Governance, Nerses Kopalyan

Political Science Faculty Research

Nation-states that encompass large Diasporas are faced with the wider responsibility of accounting for two types of members: citizens that live within the territory of the state and members of the broader nation that reside in the Diaspora. In the Armenian case, legally speaking, an Armenian is a citizen of the Republic of Armenia; but, at the same time, a diasporan Armenian is equally qualified as an Armenian, even if they do not live within the legal boundaries of the state.

Overheard: Connecting Verbal Language To Visual Meaning, Ashley Doughty Jan 2020

Overheard: Connecting Verbal Language To Visual Meaning, Ashley Doughty

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Words are symbols — visual representations of verbal language. The meaning behind a word is dependent on several things, including the origin language and the context in which the word is used. Visual messages that use words as the primary vehicle of information are most effective when the representation of meaning goes beyond the letterforms themselves. This entails making connections between the verbal characteristics of the words (cultural meaning, dialect, inflection, etc.) and the intended meaning when the words were used. The ability to make these connections is incredibly valuable to those who use text to communicate with others, especially …

Technology In Hybrid Learning: Improving Scienceeducation At Unlv, Jennifer Guerra

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Our campus has a diverse and unique range of learners. Flipping the classroom offers a greater opportunity for student success. I have converted the Introductory Chemistry course, CHEM 108, into a Hybrid learning format. The driving force behind this pedagogy, is accessibility. Taking the traditional lecture out of the classroom and putting it into an interactive video format gives students more flexibility with their schedules and allows them to learn the content at their own pace. Additionally, by utilizing H5P interactive classroom features, students are able to get meaningful feedback during the video lecture to help gauge their understanding of …

A Freirean Service Learning Model, Danielle Roth-Johnson Jan 2020

A Freirean Service Learning Model, Danielle Roth-Johnson

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

My specific teaching practice consists of a Freirean Service Learning Model I successfully developed and implemented in WMST 488: Bodies, Sex, and Health in Fall, 2018. Inspired by the pioneering model of Our Bodies, Ourselves, I first created and taught the course in 2008 to empower students to become advocates for their own health and that of loved ones. Over time, the curricular approach shifted from an individual to an institutional one that focused on health care policy and activism at the local, national and global levels. Given the evolution of my discipline, I also redesigned the curriculum to reflect …

The Prevalence Of Physical Health Problems Among Youth In The Juvenile Justice System: A Systematic Review., Wadiya A. Udell, Selina Mohammed

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Justice-involved youth suffer from a range of health problems. Using health and social science databases, we summarize findings from studies reporting rates of physical health problems among youth in the juvenile justice system published between 2006 and 2017. A total of 23 were identified, with the majority examining sexual health problems and focusing on youth confined to correctional facilities. Although fewer studies focused on non-sexual health problems and non-detained youth, findings suggest disparities across some physical health problems impacting youth within various levels of justice system involvement. Given the health risks faced by justice-involved youth and their long-term consequences, more …

Substance Abuse Treatment In Correctional Versus Non-Correctional Settings: Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic And Gender Differences, George Pro, Ricky Camplain, Samantha Sabo, Julie Baldwin, Paul A. Gilbert Jan 2020

Substance Abuse Treatment In Correctional Versus Non-Correctional Settings: Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic And Gender Differences, George Pro, Ricky Camplain, Samantha Sabo, Julie Baldwin, Paul A. Gilbert

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Background

Alcohol and drug abuse are widespread in the US. Substance abuse treatment services are effective, but utilization of services is low, particularly among African Americans, Hispanics, and women. Substance abuse is strongly associated with incarceration, and African Americans and Hispanics make up a disproportionate percentage of individuals with substance abuse problems involved in the criminal justice system. High treatment need, low treatment uptake, and the association between substance abuse and incarceration have led, in part, to correctional institutions filling the treatment gap by increasingly providing safety-net treatment services. We sought to better understand racial/ethnic and gender differences in determinants …

Toward A Holistic Agricultural Student Recruitment Model: A National Analysis Of The Factors Affecting Students’ Decision To Pursue An Agricultural Related Degree, Antoine J. Alston, Richie Roberts, Chastity W. English

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

Currently, the agricultural industry struggles to fill positions with qualified agricultural workers. Therefore, it is critical to attract high caliber individuals to agricultural degree programs that are prepared to enter the workforce with the skills needed to navigate complex issues and problems. The purpose of this national study was to identify key factors that influence the recruitment of agriculture students at land-grant and non-land-grant universities. Using Chapman’s model of student success as our conceptual lens, we tested 66 factors identified in the literature as successful recruitment strategies for colleges of agriculture based on students’ personal characteristics as well as key …

Assessing Generational Preferences In Characteristics Of An Admired Leader Among Career Library Professionals, Amy Tureen, Susie Skarl

Library Faculty Research

This study utilizes Posner and Kouzes’ Characteristics of an Admired Leader (CAL) instrument to determine if there are generational preferences in characteristics of an admired leader among career library professionals. Data was gathered from nearly 800 respondents, coded into generational cohorts, and assessed from commonalities across generational lines. Additional assessment of the data sought trends across generational cohorts within the context of employment status, library type, library subfield, and generational identity. The authors concluded that while there is little generational difference in the characteristics of an admired leader, there are commonalities across the profession at large and suggest that library …
