Implementation Of A Training Program In The Use Of The Electronic Medical Record To Improve Performance On Quality Measures And Reduce Burnout Among Healthcare Providers, Mary Monica Nara

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Rapid adoption and implementation of the electronic medical record (EMR) in health care has contributed to worsening burnout among healthcare providers (HCPs), particularly primary care physicians. Other HCPs such as nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) who provide primary care have been equally affected by the increased clerical burden related to the increasing documentation requirements from payers and are at risk for burnout. Rates of burnout in NPs are currently not well known. Burnout has been linked to decreased quality of care for patients. Inadequate training and lack of skills in the use of the EMR have contributed to …

Assessing The Cost-Benefit Of Hiring A Deu-Prepared Rn Graduate: Does It Help Reduce Organizational Costs?, Tonya D. Bryant

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Costs associated with training new nurses from the time of hire to the time of independent practice can cost organizations nearly $100,000 per nurse (Acuna, Yoder, Madrigal-Gonzalez & Yoder-Wise, 2017; Silvestre, Ulrich, Johnson, Spector, & Blegan, 2017; Trepanier, Early, Ulrich & Cherry, 2012). New-hire costs for a dedicated education unit (DEU)-prepared newly qualified newly hired nurse (NQNHN) may be prohibitive for some hospitals when considering the cumulative amount of time and costs dedicated to training these specially prepared nurses who have previous clinical and organizational experience from their time as nursing students within the organization over the duration of their …

A Guide For Outcomes Evaluation And Sustainability Of A Dedicated Education Unit Within An Academic-Practice Partnership, Jennifer Pfannes

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) has emerged as an innovative approach to providing a positive, high-quality, collaborative clinical learning environment that fosters the growth and learning of undergraduate nursing students. Additionally, the DEU model has demonstrated success in beginning to bridge the education-practice gap, tackling the faculty shortage, and easing the new graduate transition from education to practice; however, developing, evaluating and sustaining an economically successful DEU takes thoughtful,

strategic planning. The challenging nature of developing and sustaining a DEU that mutually benefits both the academic and clinical partner over time, reveals the need for more guidance to secure long-term …

Evidence-Based Practice Guide And Workflows: Improving Hospital Throughput And Reducing Emergency Department Overcrowding, Maulah Halley May 2019

Evidence-Based Practice Guide And Workflows: Improving Hospital Throughput And Reducing Emergency Department Overcrowding, Maulah Halley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hospitals in the United States are experiencing disruptions to patient throughput. These disruptions create barriers to patients who seek emergent care in the Emergency Department (ED) and who must be moved to hospital inpatient beds after the decision to admit has been made. As a result, patients requiring hospital admission via the ED may have long wait times, which, in turn, contribute to ED crowding and overcrowding. The root causes of ED overcrowding are inefficiencies within the system and the inability of hospitals to meet demand. Although bed capacity on any given unit may not be altered, ED patient’s arrival …

Managing Data-Driven Change: A Model Of Unintended Deviation, Sang-Mun Ray Cho Dec 2018

Managing Data-Driven Change: A Model Of Unintended Deviation, Sang-Mun Ray Cho

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Data-driven change in hospitality gaming is desirable because of the opportunities to leverage untapped sources of rich and abundant marketing data. However, change has been difficult to implement as indicated by a lack of widespread adoption. Some have attributed these difficulties to cultural, structural, and other generic factors but these explanations fail to explain the root dynamics of data-driven change.

In this dissertation, it is theorized that data-driven change requires a particular form of social interaction, which are called analytical bonds (AB). The suggestion was that there is a sender of an analytic deliverable and a receiver that makes a …

A Quantitative Study Of Mitigating Resistance To Change Through A Neuro Linguistic Approach: With The Use Of Narratives And A Neuro Linguistic Pattern, Mary J. Sanders May 2018

A Quantitative Study Of Mitigating Resistance To Change Through A Neuro Linguistic Approach: With The Use Of Narratives And A Neuro Linguistic Pattern, Mary J. Sanders

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Resistance to organizational change by employees and management delays implementation, creates emotional stress for both, and reduces the potential savings from rapid change implementation. The delay comes from organizational members’ beliefs stuck in the status quo thus reducing the change’s potential improvement in productivity and effectiveness. If beliefs about the change could be embraced creating organizational readiness, these negative effects could be mitigated and improvements in productivity could be realized sooner.

Reducing the resistance to organizational change through the use of metaphors and a specific neuro linguistic programming pattern (NLP) is the focus of this research study. NLP was originally …

A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Cross-sector collaboration is a highly recommended strategy to eliminate health inequities nationally and globally. In the federal sector, it is evolving into an important approach for solving complex social problems, as evidenced by its steady proliferation the past few decades. Despite the increased adoption of cross-sector collaboration, it is still not a default strategy or preeminent option for managing complex social problems. In September 2015, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET) hosted a Roundtable event to discuss opportunities and strategies to foster widespread adoption of cross-sector collaboration and resource alignment. The Roundtable featured several expert panelists and participants from …

Eliminating health disparities is a priority across national agenda and initiatives such as the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities (NPA), the National Prevention Strategy, and Healthy People 2020. To advance this priority under the NPA, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET), which is an NPA federal cross-sector and collaborative platform, initiated a voluntary pilot “health equity mapping” exercise in 2014. This exercise served as a strategy to clarify the strategic alignment between participant federal partner program missions, goals, and activities, and the goal to end health disparities and promote health equity. The mapping process included an …

Creating A Virtuous Circle Of Student Engagement With The Tech Corner, Brian R. Shuck, Susan B. Wainscott, Jennifer Church-Duran, Darcy C. Del Bosque

Library Faculty Research

While many academic libraries have followed the public library lead in developing maker-spaces, not all libraries have the money or space to dedicate to such large-scale operations. This case study explores a different approach to engaging users with new technology and investigates how to support their creativity without a costly investment in space and staffing. It demonstrates not only how students can be provided a virtual space to explore technology equipment, but also how their opinions can be leveraged for growing the collection and creating training materials.

The Data Framework: A Collaborative Tool For Assessment At The Unlv Libraries, Starr Hoffman, Ashley Hernandez-Hall

Library Faculty Research

Keeping track of the data that academic libraries capture is a massive task. The University of Nevada - Las Vegas (UNLV) University Libraries developed a data framework as a tracking tool for data points. This framework is both a data dictionary and a manual that records data-gathering procedures. This ensures that the data is continually gathered and reported in the same way, and also ensures that institutional memory of those procedures is preserved, regardless of staff turnover. Additionally, the revised Data Framework, and the revision process, transformed staff attitudes about data reporting and strengthened the libraries' culture of assessment.

However, the implementation of these initiatives has often failed. This research aimed to solve the problem: How can casinos manage organizational change programs, and internal and external customer relationship management (CRM) programs? Organizations should constantly strive to improve their levels of employee engagement, because improving employee engagement influences the well-being of both employees and organizations (Bakker, 2011, p. 268). In today’s workplaces, organizations need employees who are psychologically connected to their work, who are willing and able to invest themselves in their roles, and who are proactive and committed to high quality standards.” (Bakker, Albrecht, & Leiter, 2011, pp. 4-5). This is important; not only for private organizations but for public organizations as well, especially organizations in the criminal justice system who continuously strive to keep the peace, have constant contact with …

Increasing Comfort With End-Of-Life Discussions, Theresa Catherine Berton

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

End-of-life discussions and advanced care planning are part of the healthcare process, and within the scope of practice for providers. Despite the evidence supporting the effectiveness of these conversations, the system falls short. Talking about death is never easy. At times, it is difficult for healthcare providers to approach the topic with patients who are living with serious life-limiting illness. Reports in the end-of-life literature reveal that healthcare professionals avoid discussions about preparations for end-of-life care due to feeling unprepared, and a lack of framework for such discussions. Purpose: The purpose of this doctoral project was to improve the quality …

Play is considered a fundamental tool for early childhood education practices as it provides numerous developmental benefits for young children. However, not all play is viewed by children, parents, and early childhood educators the same, especially playful aggression. For example, rough-and-tumble play, risky play, superhero play, “bad guy” play, active pretend play, play fighting, big body play, war play, gun play, and physically active and imaginative play are types of playful aggression that benefits young children’s development; but are often viewed negatively by the adults who observe it. The contextual factors that influence the development of these conflicting perceptions—the motivation …
