Differences Between Male And Female Principals In Terms Of Demographics, Perceived Barriers Encountered, And Strategies Used While In Pursuit Of The Principalship, Ann Heywood Angulo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Without question, women numerically surpass men in the education profession, composing the greater percentage of teachers. Nonetheless, men dominate administrative positions at all levels. According to the literature, the female administrative aspirant faces numerous unique barriers making it more difficult for her to become a school administrator than for her male counterpart. As a result, she must use additional strategies if she intends to be successful in her pursuit of advancement; In light of previous research, a survey was sent to all 182 principals in the Clark County School District which is centered in Las Vegas, Nevada. The purpose of …
Children's Preferences For Text And How These Preferences Contribute To Classroom Literacy Events, Linda June Johnson
Children's Preferences For Text And How These Preferences Contribute To Classroom Literacy Events, Linda June Johnson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In an exploratory study, I examined young children's text preferences in the classroom and how those preferences contributed to three literacy events: read-alouds, independent reading, and writing. Emergent literacy, interest theory, text structure, and teacher decision-making in literacy instruction provided a framework. Data about children's preferences were compiled and three case children were then studied over five months. Videotaped observations, audiotaped interviews, record booklets, artifacts of student work, and field notes were collected. The classroom teacher and librarian were interviewed and observed to determine how their literacy decisions influenced the study. Findings indicated that the children had mainly fiction interests …

Dissent Women In Anthony Trollope's Fiction: A Sympathetic Portrayal, Elisabeth Morton Mclaren
Dissent Women In Anthony Trollope's Fiction: A Sympathetic Portrayal, Elisabeth Morton Mclaren
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examines Anthony Trollope's depiction of women, specifically dissent women who, for one reason or another, did not conform to the expectations of their society. His treatment of these women reveals an author who grew more sympathetic to the position of women as he grew older. I have divided his writing career into three periods, and from each period, I have representative women who clearly indicate Trollope changing viewpoint; In Chapter One, the Introduction, I explain Trollope's development as a writer, how he is viewed by modern critics, and his position in nineteenth-century England; Chapter Two, "Single Women" deals …
A History Of Literary Study Of The Bible, Joseph Patrick Wall
A History Of Literary Study Of The Bible, Joseph Patrick Wall
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Dogmatic biblical exegesis had a near monopoly until well into the modern era. Similarly, in academic circles, "biblical criticism" has invariably meant historical-critical study of the Bible. Both dogmatic and historical interpreters have read the Bible primarily for information--either about religion or history. The Bible's cognitive content has been primary. But now, in the latter part of the twentieth century, the intrinsic literary worth of the Bible is being widely noted; scholarly articles on the Bible regularly appear in standard literary journals; The current explosion of interest in this field may lead one to suspect 'faddism.' Nothing could be further …
George Eliot: Beyond Feminism, Mary J Dengler
George Eliot: Beyond Feminism, Mary J Dengler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The three central conflicts of George Eliot's life--an emotional conflict with male rejection, an intellectual conflict with orthodox Christianity, and a gender conflict with the limitations imposed on women--can be attributed largely to the nineteenth-century feminine ideologies. While Eliot used her nonfiction to criticize the ideas responsible for her conflicts, she used her poetry and fiction to dramatize the conflicts and develop an ideal of humanity. Eliot considered feminism, in Romola, as a resolution to these conflicts, then moved beyond feminism to develop her human ideal. This ideal, which transcends gender ideologies in response to natural and moral law, posits …
Analogies Of Image And Word: Studies In Painting And The Anglo-American Novel From The Eighteenth Century To Postmodernism, Pamela Cantrell
Analogies Of Image And Word: Studies In Painting And The Anglo-American Novel From The Eighteenth Century To Postmodernism, Pamela Cantrell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Analogies of Image and Word: Studies in Painting and the Anglo-American Novel from the Eighteenth Century to Postmodernism traces the historical progression of the relationship between painting and the novel through four representative analogies. The first chapter traces the critical history of the sister arts tradition, and examines the theoretical approaches most widely used in contemporary analogical studies. Chapter two takes up the modern concern with the sister arts as it blossomed in the eighteenth century with the pictorial iconoclasm of William Hogarth and the literary shift from the poetic tradition to the new generic form of the novel as …

From The Civil Law Doctrine To The Reasonable Use Theory And From The Frontier Thesis To Community Action: Flood Control In Las Vegas, Nevada, 1905-1976, James L Scholl
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Flood control has long been a major problem for southwestern boom towns, and Las Vegas was no exception. From its birth in 1905 until the mid 1970s, the "Civil Law Doctrine" was the legal concept used by courts and residents to settle disputes over drainage problems; This paper will argue that the court's decision to change the guiding legal principle from the Civil Law Doctrine to the Reasonable Use Rule in Nevada ended the frontier viewpoint of individualism and replaced it with a new spirit of communal action. The legal revolution, along with a series of events tied to the …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing coarse aggregates in asphaltic concrete pavements for reducing rutting in Clark County, Nevada. Previous specifications used for asphaltic concrete mix designs in the Clark County area allowed for a wide range of aggregate gradations. The aggregate gradations in the asphaltic concrete mixes produced from these specifications tended to be on the finer side of the range. The pavements constructed based on the specifications were observed to be tender and susceptible to rutting. Paving projects were initiated which demonstrated that coarser aggregates in the asphalt mixes appeared to reduce …

Analysis And Evaluation Of Three Promising Nuclear Waste Disposal Options, Venugopal Veeramachaneni
Analysis And Evaluation Of Three Promising Nuclear Waste Disposal Options, Venugopal Veeramachaneni
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Disposal of high level nuclear waste has evoked much interest among scientists, engineers and society at large. Numerous schemes have been proposed in this regard and a few have been analyzed thoroughly. However, these schemes have been found to be valid only under very specific environmental conditions, thus imposing constraints on the scheme of disposal. The option of retrievability imposed another constraint. In addition to accommodating the constraints, the disposal scheme must also comply with federal regulations (NRC 10 CFR PART 60, EPA 10 CFR PART 191, DOE 10 CFR PART 960). Due to the longevity of radionuclide toxicity, the …

Of Mice And Missiles: An Austrian School Economic Appraisal Of Lucas V South Carolina Coastal Commission, Joseph Francis Becker
Of Mice And Missiles: An Austrian School Economic Appraisal Of Lucas V South Carolina Coastal Commission, Joseph Francis Becker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper argues that to maximize the utility of society, a legal system must precisely define and strictly enforce property rights; Chapter I provides a theoretical economic framework by which various policy and judicial decisions affecting property rights can be considered; Chapter II examines the proper role for a legal system as well as the historical and United States Constitutional respect for property rights. Secondly, the devolution of this earlier respect for property rights is discussed by examining case decisions which tolerate to a greater degree, force with respect to physical property. Finally, the notion of the regulatory taking is …
Performance Evaluation Of Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithms, Kenneth B Been
Performance Evaluation Of Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithms, Kenneth B Been
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In any system in which concurrent processes share resources, mutual exclusion refers to the problem of guaranteeing the integrity of those resources by restricting their use to one process at a time. Due the complex nature of distributed systems, distributed mutual exclusion algorithms are often not amenable to theoretical analysis for performance or even correctness. Experimental inquiries are therefore warranted. This thesis investigates seven well known distributed mutual exclusion algorithms in detail, and uses computer simulation to evaluate the performance and applicability of these various algorithms. Toward this end, a realistic and general model for evaluating distributed algorithms is proposed. …

The Stress Of Fathers During The Labor And Delivery Of Their Partner, Deann Robinson Brown
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This descriptive, retrospective survey employed a questionnaire to determine what factors cause stress to expectant fathers during their partner's labor and delivery and how that stress is exhibited. Fathers of healthy newborns at two hospitals in Utah accompanying their partner in labor and delivery were asked to complete the questionnaire within 36 hours after the birth of their baby. The survey elicited responses from three different time periods during the labor and delivery: (1) the beginning of labor; (2) labor from the time of admission to the hospital and when labor reached its peak until delivery; and (3) during the …
Customer Compatibility In Restaurants, Yuh-Jye Cherng
Customer Compatibility In Restaurants, Yuh-Jye Cherng
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the relative level of importance of customer-to-customer relationships in determining perceptions of good value in three types of restaurants. Overall, the findings indicate that customer behaviors and characteristics are not as important as the restaurant attributes investigated in the 1992 National Restaurant Association price-value study. However, the findings suggest that customer compatibility factors become more important as average check increases. Plus, some segments of the population perceive compatibility attributes as very important. Further investigation of compatibility management appears warranted if more competitive service environments are to be created.

Evaluation Of Selected Aliphatic Acids And Polytetrahydrofurans For Use As Calibration Agents For Thermospray Hplc/Ms, Tonya Rose Dombrowski
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A method of tuning and calibration for a thermospray ion source on a benchtop quadrupole mass spectrometer using trifluoroacetic acid, pentafluoropropionic acid, heptafluorobutyric acid, polytetrahydrofuran-250, and polytetrahydrofuran-650 was proposed and evaluated. A 0.5% solution of the aliphatic acids showed good mass range coverage (163-641) in the negative mode, and no substantial memory effects. This mixture was evaluated over 45 days for fluctuations in the ion intensities and ratios. It remained stable within the expected thermospray reproducibility range, although the volatility of the trifluoroacetic acid made daily preparation of standard mixtures necessary. A similar solution of the polytetrahydrofurans was evaluated in …

Self-Stabilizing Deadlock Algorithms In Distributed Systems, Mitchell Elliott Flatebo
Self-Stabilizing Deadlock Algorithms In Distributed Systems, Mitchell Elliott Flatebo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A self-stabilizing system is a network of processors, which, when started from an arbitrary (and possibly illegal) initial state, always returns to a legal state in a finite number of steps. Self-stabilization is an evolving paradigm in fault-tolerant computing. This research will be the first time self-stabilization is used in the areas of deadlock detection and prevention. Traditional deadlock detection algorithms have a process initiate a probe. If that probe travels around the system and is received by the initiator, there is a cycle in the system, and deadlock is detected. In order to prevent deadlocks, algorithms usually rank nodes …
