Phylogeography Of The Desert Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma Platyrhinos) And The Short-Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma Douglassi): Patterns Of Divergence And Diversity, Kenneth Bruce Jones Jan 1994

Phylogeography Of The Desert Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma Platyrhinos) And The Short-Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma Douglassi): Patterns Of Divergence And Diversity, Kenneth Bruce Jones

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Historical environmental change is thought to have played an important role in the diversification of the biota of western North America. Many patterns of diversification have been associated with glacial-interglacial cycles of the latest Pleistocene. Recent evidence on diversification patterns in small mammals suggests a response to older environmental change, especially the uplift of the western North American cordillera; To evaluate the relative influence of old and recent historical environmental change on lineage diversification, mitochondrial DNA molecular phylogeographies of Phrynosoma douglassi (the short-horned lizard) and Phrynosoma platyrhinos (the desert horned lizard) were analyzed. Both species are widespread and have relatively …

An Assessment Of The Causes Of Cognitive Dissonance In The Working Environment Of The Hospitality Industry, Susan Elizabeth Demarinis Jan 1994

An Assessment Of The Causes Of Cognitive Dissonance In The Working Environment Of The Hospitality Industry, Susan Elizabeth Demarinis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory research was to investigate the possible existence of cognitive dissonance in the working environment of a Las Vegas Hotel/Casino's Food and Beverage department. A chronological and evolutionary base for the concept of cognitive dissonance was provided through an extensive, but pointed, review of literature; A survey in two parts was used to determine the existence of cognitive dissonance. The first part consisted of a ten factors instrument, previously administered, to identify management misperceptions. The second part of the survey consisted of a follow-up interview in which employees were allowed to give their opinions in their …

Use Of Log Normal Transformation In Environmental Statistics, Sally L Stewart Jan 1994

Use Of Log Normal Transformation In Environmental Statistics, Sally L Stewart

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The log normal transformation is commonly used in the analysis of environmental data. The sample histogram of observed contaminant concentrations from a Superfund site typically appears to be log normal and the concentration data is log-transformed so that the classical statistical methods based on normal distribution can be used. USEPA guidance documents on statistical evaluation of attainment of cleanup standards for soils suggest using the log normal transformation in case the contaminant concentration data appears to be log normal. There are two basic problems with using a transformation in data analysis: (i) interpretation of results, and (ii) in transforming a …

Path Planning And Obstacle Avoidance For A Robot With Large Degree Of Redundancy, John Zhao Li Jan 1994

Path Planning And Obstacle Avoidance For A Robot With Large Degree Of Redundancy, John Zhao Li

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An algorithm to allow a redundant robot to avoid obstacles in its workspace is proposed. The task of path planning is formulated as a sequence of nonlinear programming problems. For each problem, the objective is to minimize the distance between the current location of the end-effector and some intermediate point along a desired path. Two penalties are added to the objective function to ensure that the robot is not colliding with an obstacle and that its links are intersecting one another. Inequality constraints describing the mechanical stops and limiting values for joint movements are incorporated. Obstacles are represented as polygons, …

Self-Stabilizing Routing Protocols, Rajesh Viswanathan Jan 1994

Self-Stabilizing Routing Protocols, Rajesh Viswanathan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In systems made up of processors and links connecting the processors, the global state of the system is defined by the local variables of the individual processors. The set of global states can be defined as being either legal or illegal. A self-stabilizing system is one that forces a system from an illegal state to a global legal state without external interference, using a finite number of steps. This thesis will concentrate on application of self-stabilization to routing problems, in particular path identification, connectivity and methods involved in destinational routing. Traditional methods for creation of rooted paths to multiple destinations …

Evaluation Of Page Quality Using Simple Features, Luis Ricardo Blando Jan 1994

Evaluation Of Page Quality Using Simple Features, Luis Ricardo Blando

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A classifier to determine page quality from an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) perspective is developed. It classifies a given page image as either "good" (i.e. high OCR accuracy is expected) or "bad" (i.e., low OCR accuracy expected). The classifier is based upon measuring the amount of white speckle, the amount of broken pieces, and the overall size information in the page. Two different sets of test data were used to evaluate the classifier: the Test dataset containing 439 pages and the Magazine dataset containing 200 pages. The classifier recognized 85% of the pages in the Test dataset correctly. However, approximately …

The Attitudes Of Key Executives Of International Tourist Hotels In Taiwan Toward Casino Investments In Taiwan, Shiang-Lih Chen Jan 1994

The Attitudes Of Key Executives Of International Tourist Hotels In Taiwan Toward Casino Investments In Taiwan, Shiang-Lih Chen

Casino gaming is growing. In America, casino operations have become the largest segments of the entertainment industry. In Asia, another four countries will legalize casino gambling in 1994. The growth of the gaming industry is a worldwide trend; Right now, there is an exceptional opportunity; a special legislative bill is under consideration to legalize casino gambling in Taiwanese surrounding island districts. The legislators are evaluating the necessity of legalized casino gambling in Taiwan. According to other countries' casino operation experiences, some legislators consider hotel industry investors to be the most suitable operators of casino operations. One of their concerns was …

Spectral Analysis Of The Flow Behavior Of Big Spring, Kings Canyon National Park, California, Linda Urzendowski Dec 1993

Spectral Analysis Of The Flow Behavior Of Big Spring, Kings Canyon National Park, California, Linda Urzendowski

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Big Spring, the resurgence of a karst aquifer in the Lilburn Cave system (Kings Canyon National Park, California), displays the uncommon phenomena of ebb and flow discharge during periods of high runoff.

Hydrograph analyses indicate that the portion of Lilburn Cave between the Z-Room and Big Spring is primarily a conduit flow aquifer. The power spectra strongly indicate a nonlinear system, with evidence of quasi-linear behavior found on a smaller scale. The transfer and kernel function indicate that no additional significant inputs or outputs to the system exist. The bench-scale model built to simulate the ebb and flow cycles in …

The Geology Of The Tuff Of Bridge Spring: Southern Nevada And Northwestern Arizona, Shirley Ann Morikawa Dec 1993

The Geology Of The Tuff Of Bridge Spring: Southern Nevada And Northwestern Arizona, Shirley Ann Morikawa

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Tuff of Bridge Spring (TBS) is a regionally-widespread, andesite to rhyolite (59.50 to 74.91 wt. %) ash-flow tuff of mid-Miocene age (ca. 15.2 Ma) that is exposed in the northern Colorado River extensional corridor of southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. Determination of the areal distribution, geochronology, lithology, geochemistry, and internal stratigraphy of the TBS is important for its establishment as a reliable stratigraphic reference horizon for tectonic reconstructions of the extensional corridor during the middle Miocene. Based on reoccurring patterns of major and trace element variation, the TBS is divided into constant Cr/variable SiO2 and variable Cr/variable SiO …

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd Oct 1993

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Some risk due to the contamination of workplace environments is an inevitable part of human lives. These risks can often be reduced by improving the control of environmental pollution in the workplace. An extremely important challenge for any industry is to develop a mechanism to identify acceptable levels of safety, or "acceptable risk" in the workplace for specific situations, and to assure adequate quality control over measured or calculated exposure concentrations and their possible contributions to adverse health effects.

Observation Of Non-Isotropic Auger Angular Distribution In The C(1s) Shape Resonance Of Co, Oliver Hemmers, Franz Heiser, J. Eiben, R. Wehlitz, U. Becker Aug 1993

Observation Of Non-Isotropic Auger Angular Distribution In The C(1s) Shape Resonance Of Co, Oliver Hemmers, Franz Heiser, J. Eiben, R. Wehlitz, U. Becker

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Angle-resolved high-resolution C(KVV) Auger spectra of CO were taken in the vicinity of the C(1s) σ* shape resonance. These spectra show clear evidence for the theoretically predicted anisotropic K-shell Auger emission in molecules. Complementary results from angle-resolved photoion spectroscopy show that the small size of the observed effect is, besides the varying intrinsic anisotropy of the Auger decay, also due to a smaller anisotropy in the primary absorption process than originally predicted but in good agreement with more recent calculations. Contrary to this, satellite Auger transitions show unexpectedly large anisotropies.

Optimization Of The Seating Position In A Human-Powered Vehicle, Y. Lei, Mohamed Trabia, D. Too Jun 1993

Optimization Of The Seating Position In A Human-Powered Vehicle, Y. Lei, Mohamed Trabia, D. Too

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Until recently, most of the human-powered vehicles (HPV) were designed focusing solely on its aerodynamics characteristic. In many of these HPV designs, the rider seating position was arbitrarily chosen without consideration of its effect on the rider's comfort and cycling effectiveness. Also, there is no guarantee that the seating position is related to maximum power output. Too (1991) used an experimental approach to determine that the rider will produce the maximum anaerobic power when the seat tube angle of a bicycle is at 75° whereas Hull and Gonzalez (1990) used an engineering approach to optimize the cycling biomechanics. However several …

War Crimes Of The 90s: Rape As A Strategy, Mary Guinan Mar 1993

War Crimes Of The 90s: Rape As A Strategy, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Historically, only men went to war. The winners took the losers' women and could rape, enslave, or kill them. As we moved into a more modern civilization, the rights of the winner over the women of the loser became less clear and were only vaguely documented. Even for modern war historians, what happens to the men on and off the battlefield is the main preoccupation. After all, women do not face combat and what happens to them seems unimportant. The rape of women by conquering armies has continued through all wars, but has rarely been considered a war crime, especially …

Multiplet-Changing Auger Transitions In Valence Double Photoionization, U. Becker, Oliver Hemmers, B. Langer, I. Lee, A. Menzel, R. Wehlitz, M. Ya Amusia Feb 1993

Multiplet-Changing Auger Transitions In Valence Double Photoionization, U. Becker, Oliver Hemmers, B. Langer, I. Lee, A. Menzel, R. Wehlitz, M. Ya Amusia

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The decay of valence satellite states in neon above the first double-ionization threshold has been studied experimentally and theoretically. Special emphasis was given to differentiate between two decay modes: valence Auger and valence-multiplet Auger decay. It is shown that the latter process is predominant in the low kinetic energy part of the spectrum. The main structures of this low-energy Auger spectrum could be designated by help of calculated transition energies and decay rates.

The Editor’S Role In Preventing Gender Bias In Scientific Journals: A Challenge, Mary Guinan Jan 1993

The Editor’S Role In Preventing Gender Bias In Scientific Journals: A Challenge, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

One way to explore whether gender bias exists in the process of scientific publishing is to examine the end product, ie, the published works, using previously validated criteria. Williams and Borins used this method and found significant gender bias in the studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This study will be challenged on the basis of the criteria used to detect bias. Are they valid'' Who is to decide" No generally agreed upon criteria exist to examine gender bias. Indeed, scientific journals have not indicated that they see a need for such examination. But even this method …

The following is a commencement address Dr. Guinan delivered at the Emory University School of Public Health in May 1992, just weeks after riots erupted in response to the Rodney King verdict. Her remarks were very timely, but her message is timeless. It is just as relevant today, more than a year later, as it was that day.

Parametric Studies Of The Criticality Of Radioactive Spent Fuel Canisters In A Tuff Repository, Paige Robin Zielinski Jan 1993

Parametric Studies Of The Criticality Of Radioactive Spent Fuel Canisters In A Tuff Repository, Paige Robin Zielinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

With the availability of temporary nuclear waste storage in short supply, the federal government has invested in the research of permanent nuclear waste storage. One area of study is the criticality achieved by emplaced radioactive waste. In this study, a series of parametric analyses were completed to show the relative change in the value of k{dollar}\sb{\rm eff}{dollar} due to changes in canister composition, intrusion of water, and increased enrichment of the fuel. It was found that k{dollar}\sb{\rm eff}{dollar} was increased approximately 33% when the canister was completely flooded, however, the effect of tuff saturation was minimal. Also, different materials and …

Specifically, the differences in the human-animal and human-human relationships among abused adolescents and non-abused ("normal") adolescents were investigated. Additionally, for both types of relationships, differences among owners of abused and non-abused pets were analyzed. Subjects consisted of 47 identified victims of maltreatment and 55 "normal" teenagers. All subjects were 13 to 17 years of age and currently owned a pet. Results show that abused adolescents differed significantly from non-abused adolescents in both child-pet and human-human relationships. …

Evaluation Of Filter Pack Dewatering On Voc Concentrations In A Simulated Low-Yield Monitoring Well, Gary Allen Icopini Jan 1993

Evaluation Of Filter Pack Dewatering On Voc Concentrations In A Simulated Low-Yield Monitoring Well, Gary Allen Icopini

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A physical model was constructed to investigate the physical process of dewatering the filter-pack of a low-yield ground-water monitoring well and determine if this process effects the concentration of dissolved volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It was hypothesized that losses of VOCs would be observed as a result of an increased air-water interface and possibly turbulent flow through the filter pack during water-level recovery; Little or no measurable losses of 1,1,1-TCA, MCB, or 1,1,2,2-TET were detected during water-level recovery while simulating non-stagnant well conditions. These data imply that losses of VOCs due to volatilization resulting from the physical action of water …

This methodological study, based on Neuman's holistic view of the client, proposed to substantiate the reliability and validity of the PRQ85 as a measure of perceived social support with women experiencing breast cancer; A sample of 82 women with breast cancer responded to a composite questionnaire consisting of two social support measures (Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ85)), Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ)), two instruments to measure the mental health constructs depression (Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)) and anxiety (Spielberger Trait …

Effects Of Transmission Line Compensation And Power Factor Correction On Harmonic Propagation, Robert Douglas Kingston Jan 1993

Effects Of Transmission Line Compensation And Power Factor Correction On Harmonic Propagation, Robert Douglas Kingston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses power quality at two different levels, transmission and utilization. Harmonics injected at these levels can severely degrade the performance and long term reliability of the power system; At the utilization level, a typical industrial power system configuration that requires power factor capacitors and tuned harmonic filters for reactive power compensation and harmonic-control is analyzed. The resonant conditions for a given power factor correction or harmonic frequency are determined directly from the roots of a quadratic expression. This formulation allows a quick evaluation of the power factor range with excessive harmonic levels and reveals the effect of tuned …
