Convention Attendees' Attitude And Its Relation To Intention, Jung-Eun Kim
Convention Attendees' Attitude And Its Relation To Intention, Jung-Eun Kim
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to assess convention attendees' overall attitudes toward participating a convention and to examine how the attitudes are related to the attendees' intention to participate in a convention in the future; The findings indicate that there is no significant linear relationship between the attendees' attitude and their intention. In addition, attitude-intention relationship in respect to past participation, primary reason for participation, and residence is too weak to support the hypothesis; This study contributes to the convention marketing by measuring the convention attendees' attitudes toward the attributes and identifying the most important evaluative criterion. This study …
An Application Of Gaussian Radial Based Function Neural Networks For The Control Of A Nonlinear Multi Link Robotic Manipulator, Robert T Mizerek
An Application Of Gaussian Radial Based Function Neural Networks For The Control Of A Nonlinear Multi Link Robotic Manipulator, Robert T Mizerek
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The theory of Gaussian radial based function neural networks is developed along with a stable adaptive weight training law founded upon Lyapunov stability theory. This is applied to the control of a nonlinear multi-linked robotic manipulator for the general case of N links. Simulations of a two link system are performed and demonstrate the derived principles.
Self-Stabilizing Distributed Algorithms For Acyclic Graphs, Viruthagiri Natarajan
Self-Stabilizing Distributed Algorithms For Acyclic Graphs, Viruthagiri Natarajan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A self-stabilizing distributed system is a network of processors, which when started from an arbitrary and possibly illegal state, always returns to a legal state in a finite number of steps. Two self-stabilizing protocols for distributed systems are presented in this thesis. The first protocol topologically sorts the processors in a distributed system of directed acyclic graph (DAG) topology and uses this information to build a shortest path routing table in each node in the system to all accessible nodes from that node. The second protocol determines the rank of the individual processors in a distributed tree network based on …
The Timing Of Orgasm And Sexual Satisfaction, Jacqueline Lee Newman
The Timing Of Orgasm And Sexual Satisfaction, Jacqueline Lee Newman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Although sexual satisfaction is often defined subjectively, researchers have attempted to discover predictor variables that may be common to most individual's conceptions of sexual satisfaction. The discovery of such predictor variables would help create a unifying definition that could be consistently applied across the population of sexually-active individuals. The existence of such a unified definition would be functionally important for those individuals seeking sex therapy. The goal of the present study was to partially replicate and extend past research. It was hypothesized that for both women and men a relationship exists between the timing of orgasm and sexual satisfaction. Specifically …
An-Pan Man: Language And Culture In A Japanese Children's Cartoon, Debra Jane Occhi
An-Pan Man: Language And Culture In A Japanese Children's Cartoon, Debra Jane Occhi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines a Japanese children's fantasy story, An-Pan Man, an animated television cartoon. The cartoon employs stereotypical characterizations that are (a) defined by language use, especially politeness markers encoded in referents for self and other, and (b) exhibited through enacted nonverbal behavior. Since the episodic An-Pan Man story is directed toward a young audience, it can be considered as a presentation that models appropriate and inappropriate language and behavior to children through the media of popular culture. I present an interpretation of culturally specific identities established by language use through translation and interpretation of the cartoon assisted by native-speaker …
An Empirical Test Of The Restrictions In A Net Migration Equation, Thomas A Perrigo
An Empirical Test Of The Restrictions In A Net Migration Equation, Thomas A Perrigo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper is an empirical study of the spatial neutrality of economic incentives and the equivalency of push-pull factors of net migration into Clark County, Nevada. These issues are examined in the context of the Economic-Demographic Forecasting and Simulation Model developed by Regional Economic Modeling Incorporated. Specifically, two implicit assumptions found in the net migration equation in the REMI model are tested; First, a test is performed to determine if pooling migration data across regions is appropriate. That is, are potential migrants in nearby areas more responsive to differentials in expected income than potential migrants in more distant areas?;The results …
Life History Biology And Soil Characteristics Of Two Species Of Arctomecon (Papaveraceae), Shelia Kathleen Sheldon
Life History Biology And Soil Characteristics Of Two Species Of Arctomecon (Papaveraceae), Shelia Kathleen Sheldon
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Two rare plant species of the Mojave Desert were investigated in this study. Life history and reproductive data as well as vegetative associates and soil characteristics for Arctomecon californica Torr. and Frem. and Arctomecon merriamii Cov. were collected. Results for the life history and reproductive data show that the highest mortality in both species occurs at the seedling stage. Loss of potential seed, for both species, was highest at the bud and capsule stage. Arctomecon californica was found to be reproductively self-incompatible, while A. merriamii was able to self-pollinate. Results from the vegetative and soil data show that the vegetation …
"For The Continuance Of Their Favours": Women, The Public Sphere And The Print Culture In England, 1750-1760, Sharlene Shalimar Sayegh
"For The Continuance Of Their Favours": Women, The Public Sphere And The Print Culture In England, 1750-1760, Sharlene Shalimar Sayegh
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Focussing on letters from readers of "ladies' thinspace" periodicals as well as advertisements placed by women in the provincial newspaper, The Ipswich Journal, this thesis historically examines women's use of the growing print culture in England from 1750 to 1760. Notions that women overwhelmingly accepted and articulated the "domestic sphere" ideology at this time are contradicted by historical evidence. Despite the constraints imposed by prescriptive literature, women who used the print culture in eighteenth-century England asserted their public economic and social lives. Women's public and non-domestic lives were not effectively stifled by the didactic literature and domestic ideology they daily …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the present research was to decrease disruptive and aggressive behaviors using videotape peer-modeling and videotape self-modeling of preschoolers who were enrolled in a Day Treatment Program for emotionally and behavioral disturbed children. A multiple baseline design was used. The children received no treatment, viewed a video of a peer engaging in appropriate behavior, then the children viewed a videotape in which they were engaging in appropriate behavior, and a follow-up phase was used. Results indicated that for disruptive behaviors videotape self-modeling may have decreased the frequency more then videotape peer-modeling did. For aggressive behavior, both videotape peer-modeling …
Woodstock: The Creation And Evolution Of A Myth, Jo Raelene Sorrell
Woodstock: The Creation And Evolution Of A Myth, Jo Raelene Sorrell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, the 1969 Woodstock festival will be studied as a myth which has been perpetuated by the media. To show that Woodstock has indeed become a myth, this study looks at the way the festival has been reported in the media and understood by the public; First, Woodstock is analyzed as a cultural event of the 1960s. That decade is described in order to give the reader perspective about the political and sociological influence that Woodstock has on American culture; A number of scholars, including Eliade, Braden, and Rowland, have theorized that myth is an important cultural event. …
Microbial Transport In Volcanic Tuff Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Sandra Paige Story
Microbial Transport In Volcanic Tuff Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Sandra Paige Story
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Water flowing along fractures may affect the mobilization of microorganisms in volcanic tuff and impose conditions that are different from those in the rock matrix away from water flow paths. To address the potential for bacterial transport with water in deep fractured tuffs, flow water and six rock samples were taken progressively farther from a deep subsurface fracture flow system for microbiological and geological comparisons. Differences in the composition of microbiota among sites appeared to be the result of proximity to flow water. The microbiota in the vicinity of the fracture water flow path, in contrast to that in rock …
Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Response Pattern Analysis Of Volatile Organics In Soils, Steven Edward Ward
Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Response Pattern Analysis Of Volatile Organics In Soils, Steven Edward Ward
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purge-and-trap gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric methods used by government agencies and their contracting laboratories for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in soils require the addition of both surrogate and internal standards to the sample matrix just prior to purging the sample with an inert gas. Addition of the standards at this point in the analysis provides no information regarding the effect that the sample matrix has on the target compounds, with a resultant artificially low calculated value for the target compounds; Addition of surrogate standards to the sample matrix at the same time as the target compounds reveals patterns …

The Presidency And Environmental Policymaking: A Critical Assessment Of George Bush, Ronald Gene Westfall
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Environmental concerns have, gradually and precariously, become integrated into the American policymaking process. Recognized as an essential aspect of human quality of life, environmental policy receives ever increasing attention from American policymakers. Owing to developments such as the passage of the Clean Air Act and the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the significance of addressing environmental challenges has garnered both domestic and international attention. In providing guidance for American environmental policies, American presidents function as vital arbiters in the shaping of domestic and international environmental policies. Herein lies the necessity for addressing environmental policymaking crafted within the parameters …
New Empirical Equations For Calculating Sound Pressure Levels In Rooms, Wen Bo Zeng
New Empirical Equations For Calculating Sound Pressure Levels In Rooms, Wen Bo Zeng
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Six room acoustic models were reviewed in the existing literature. There was no single acoustical model that was satisfactory for the rooms whose geometric and acoustic characteristics were different. In order to develop a new empirical room equation to predict the sound pressure distribution in rooms, seventeen rooms whose volumes ranged from 2,671 ft{dollar}\sp3{dollar} to 149,000 ft{dollar}\sp3{dollar} were examined. Two sets of sound tests, reverberation times and sound pressure levels, were conducted in these rooms. After a data base was built up, regression analyses were made. Finally, two empirical room acoustic equations, one for small rooms and another for large …
A Finite Element Approach To Open Channel Flow, Michael J Bagstad
A Finite Element Approach To Open Channel Flow, Michael J Bagstad
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A dissipative Galerkin scheme has been developed for the study of the propagation of hydraulic jumps and bores in open channels. It uses the basis function to weight the temporal terms and an asymmetric weighting function to weight the convection terms. The scheme has been improved with routines that both apply the asymmetric weighting function only in the region of the shock and proportion the use of the asymmetric weighting function according to the magnitude of the local spurious oscillations. The introduced variability in the model improved the performance of the model in all examples tested. This scheme was compared …
Analysis Of Time-Varying Harmonics In Electrical Distribution Systems, Venkatasubra Banunarayanan
Analysis Of Time-Varying Harmonics In Electrical Distribution Systems, Venkatasubra Banunarayanan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the time-varying nature of fundamental and harmonic signals in electric power distribution systems. Measurements show that signal variations are neither completely deterministic nor random. As a consequence the deterministic and random parts are analyzed separately. Two methods are employed to extract the deterministic and random parts. One method extracts the deterministic part using regression analysis, and the remaining random part is expected to resemble the normal distribution. A procedure for obtaining the distribution of the peak voltages is presented. In the second method, wavelet transforms is applied to harmonic signal variations. The Discrete Wavelet Transform is used …

Origin And Geological Significance Of Mylonitic Shear Zones, Northern Lucy Gray Range, Clark County, Nevada, Clinton H Christensen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Beer Bottle Pass pluton, at the northern end of the Lucy Gray Range, Nevada, is part of a continent-scale belt of 1.4 Ga intrusive rocks that extend from California to Labrador. These granites are conventionally interpreted as anorogenic; however, recent work has documented that some of these plutons may have been deformed during or after emplacement. In the Lucy Gray Range, a series of mylonite zones is spatially associated with the Beer Bottle Pass pluton. An integrated study involving field and laboratory work, was used to distinguish between three possible scenarios for the origin of the mylonites: (1) intrusion …
Modelling Of A Temporal Object-Oriented Geographic Information System, David Edward Disalvio
Modelling Of A Temporal Object-Oriented Geographic Information System, David Edward Disalvio
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Much research has been performed in recent years in object-oriented technologies. First, object-oriented programming languages were developed and more recently object-oriented databases. Geographic information systems have also been the subject of research during this time. While many models have been developed that add the concept of time to an object-oriented database, most of this work has been concentrated on efficient temporal queries. We feel that another important use of temporal databases is the ability to sequence through historical data efficiently. We will add this temporal feature to an object-oriented geographical information system.

An Algebra For Structured Text, Srinivasulu Erva
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is generally used to mark the logical structure of a document. In general, the structure information obtained from SGML documents can be used by an IR system to perform structure-level retrieval. In this thesis, we present a formal model and a modified version of Abiteboul and Beeri's complex object algebra to manipulate the content and structure of SGML documents. Furthermore, we provide an extensive list of queries and their formulations to show the algebra's expressive power for manipulation of textual objects.

Running To Win: The Utility Of The Ticket-Splitter Theory In Presidential Elections, Mark Edward Kaufman
Running To Win: The Utility Of The Ticket-Splitter Theory In Presidential Elections, Mark Edward Kaufman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Theory suggests that ticket-splitters often are the balance of power in elections, and constitute at least one-fourth of the American electorate. Ticket-splitting is not, however, motivated by party identification. Instead the voter's evaluation of the candidate, pertinent issues, and party attitudes contribute to their choice. Candidates, therefore, can attract electoral majorities by communicating certain messages through the identification, location, and targeting of ticket-splitters. This thesis will examine election data from 1952-1990. If the theory proves reliable and valid, the usefulness of the traditional two-party analysis of the modern electoral environment will be questioned.
