Testing The Naked Eye Observation Of The Cervix After Application Of Acetic Acid As An Effective Screening Test For Cervical Dysplasia, Carol M Schmidt Jan 1997

Testing The Naked Eye Observation Of The Cervix After Application Of Acetic Acid As An Effective Screening Test For Cervical Dysplasia, Carol M Schmidt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Papanicolaou test is the recommended screening for cervical cancer. It has a high false-negative rate. Because of the imperfection of the Papanicolaou other screening tests have been developed. Five studies compared various aspects of different screening techniques with mixed results; A quasi-experimental design study was constructed comparing the naked eye observation of the cervix to the colposcopy observation, and the naked eye observation of the cervix to the Papanicolaou test; The sample of 136 women from the Las Vegas area, being seen at their regular clinics were examined with all three procedures. A physiologic framework directed this study. The …

Crime And Its Relationship To The University Medical Center, Paul D Shapiro Jan 1997

Crime And Its Relationship To The University Medical Center, Paul D Shapiro

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the relationship between crime and violence and the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. An investigation was conducted to determine how crime and violence affects the medical center from an economic, security, staff and organizational response perspective; Nursing staff and security officer interviews, supplemented with security department incident reports, suggest a perception problem exists. Nurses interviewed believe a major cost of crime and violence at the medical center is the perceived threat to their personal safety by gang members and patients under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Security officer interviews and data from incident reports suggest …

The Impact And Pattern Of Gene And Genome Duplication In The History Of Increasing Organismal Complexity, Matthew Rand Ronshaugen Jan 1997

The Impact And Pattern Of Gene And Genome Duplication In The History Of Increasing Organismal Complexity, Matthew Rand Ronshaugen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The increase in phenotypic or morphological complexity in organisms may stem from a corresponding increase in the complexity of the underlying genetic architecture, driven by the process of gene duplication. Gene duplication is a mutational mechanism that can impact the genome through the gradual birth and death of individual genes or clusters of genes, and through infrequent episodic events of whole genome duplication. Functional and pleiotropic differences among genes may impact the probability of fixation of duplicated genes and the facility of gene families to record duplication events across deep history. Phylogenetic inference of the relationship among genes in multigene …

Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin Jan 1997

Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

According to the established theories on the life cycle of social movements, the Maintenance Stage of a movement is a critical time that marks a crossroads. One path leads to victory and the other to oblivion. The odds are strongly against victory for any social movement because the bureaucratic necessities for long-term maintenance of a movement siphon off spontaneity, excitement, and "esprit de corps." Few social movements are totally successful and many are absorbed or cooped by established institutions. This study examines how the Religious Right, under the leadership of the Christian Coalition, has defied the odds and has become …

Techniques For Lossless Image Compression, Daniel R Jenkins Jan 1997

Techniques For Lossless Image Compression, Daniel R Jenkins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Popular lossless image compression techniques used today belong to the Lempel-Ziv family of encoders. These techniques are generic in nature and do not take full advantage of the two-dimensional correlation of digital image data. They process a one-dimensional stream of data replacing repetitions with smaller codes. Techniques for Lossless Image Compression introduces a new model for lossless image compression that consists of two stages: transformation and encoDing Transformation takes advantage of the correlative properties of the data, modifying it in order to maximize the use of encoding techniques. Encoding can be described as replacing data symbols that occur frequently or …

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio Jan 1997

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Walter Macken: Life in Literature introduces Walter Macken, a Galwegian novelist, playwright, short-story writer, and children's novelist, to an American audience in order to make his works better known. The themes in Macken's novels show common elements among Irish authors. The use of the common man and the use of Ireland's history are most prevalent in Irish literature. However, Macken's use of autobiographical elements in the midst of his presentation of life in the West of Ireland, in many ways, sets him apart from the other Irish authors. Few have chronicled the lives of the farmers and the fishermen in …

Volcanology And Geochemistry Of Pliocene And Quaternary Basalts On Citadel Mountain, Lunar Crater Volcanic Field, Pancake Range, Nevada, Loretta Darlene Dickson Jan 1997

Volcanology And Geochemistry Of Pliocene And Quaternary Basalts On Citadel Mountain, Lunar Crater Volcanic Field, Pancake Range, Nevada, Loretta Darlene Dickson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Alkali basalts on Citadel Mountain form the southern margin of the Lunar Crater Volcanic Field (LCVF) in the central Great Basin, Nevada. Citadel Mountain, comprised of a faulted, north tilted section of Tertiary andesite and ash-flow tuff, is capped by Pliocene and Quaternary alkali basalt flows that erupted from six major cinder cones. The basalt flows on Citadel Mountain can be divided into two groups (older and younger) based on age and isotopic signatures. The older basalt group is characterized by high {dollar}\sp{87}{dollar}Sr/{dollar}\sp{86}{dollar}Sr and low {dollar}\rm\epsilon\sb{Nd},{dollar} and the younger group has low {dollar}\sp{87}{dollar}Sr/{dollar}\sp{86}{dollar}Sr and high {dollar}\rm\epsilon\sb{Nd}.{dollar} Geochemical evidence suggests that …

Examples are included of transport processor applications and finite wordlength coefficient applications.

A Family Portrait: Domestic Dynamics In The Fiction Of Mary Lavin, Lisa Lorraine Montagne Jan 1997

A Family Portrait: Domestic Dynamics In The Fiction Of Mary Lavin, Lisa Lorraine Montagne

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mary Lavin (1912-1996) was fairly well-known in Ireland during her lifetime; however, there has been relatively little critical attention paid to her, especially in America, throughout her fifty-year career. This study focuses on the domestic dynamics of the family in Lavin's fiction, whose world is influenced by the more harsh realities of early twentieth-century Irish society: the Victorian expectations of traditional gender roles, a rigid social caste system, and, at times, misguided religion. It is the purpose of this study to explore whether Lavin's characters can find happiness and fulfillment by acting according to personal conscience within this closely-prescribed social …

A Self-Consistent Power Relation For An Inverse Compton Scattering Theory, Robert A. Schill Jr. Jan 1997

A Self-Consistent Power Relation For An Inverse Compton Scattering Theory, Robert A. Schill Jr.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

In a self-consistent manner, the total power for linear inverse Compton scattering between a Gaussian electron beam colliding head on with a Gaussian laser beam is obtained. The theory is shown to agree with well-known limiting cases. Coupling among harmonic modes is explicitly shown in the resultant power relation. Even so, for the parameters of interest, harmonic modes are negligible compared to the fundamental mode. Total power calculations are of importance in detector calibration. The theory is applied using practical linear accelerator and laser parameters.

Ventilation Rates For Carassius Auratus During Changes In Dissolved Oxygen, Collin Nolan Dec 1996

Ventilation Rates For Carassius Auratus During Changes In Dissolved Oxygen, Collin Nolan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This experiment was designed to determine whether dissolved oxygen concentrations would influence the ventilation rate of goldfish, Carassius auratus. Ventilation rate can be determined by counting opercular movements. Opercular movements of the same five goldfish were counted at three different levels of dissolved oxygen to determine whether there were differences in ventilation rates. Average ventilation rates were established for each of the three levels of dissolved oxygen and compared statistically. There were significant differences in the ventilation rates averages at each of the three levels. Carassius auratus will exhibit changes in ventilation rates when dissolved oxygen levels change.

A Stochastic Model For Crystal-Amorphous Transition In Low Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxial Si(111), R. Venkatasubramanian, Suresh Gorantla, S. Muthuvenkatraman, Donald L. Dorsey Dec 1996

A Stochastic Model For Crystal-Amorphous Transition In Low Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxial Si(111), R. Venkatasubramanian, Suresh Gorantla, S. Muthuvenkatraman, Donald L. Dorsey

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Molecular beam epitaxial Si (111) grown below a certain temperature result in amorphous structure due to the limited surface mobility of atoms in finding correct epitaxial sites. In spite of many experimental and theoretical studies, the mechanism of crystal‐amorphous transition and its dynamics related to the growth conditions are not well understood. In this article, we present a theoretical model based on the formation of stacking fault like defects as a precursor to the amorphous transition of the layer. The model is simulated based on a stochastic model approach and the results are compared to that of experiments for temperatures …

The Geology And Structures In The Northern Hiko Range, Lincoln County, Nevada, Douglas D. Switzer Dec 1996

The Geology And Structures In The Northern Hiko Range, Lincoln County, Nevada, Douglas D. Switzer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the northern Hiko Range, extension occurred in four temporally distinct episodes during the Cenozoic. The extensional events are (1) prevolcanic (> 27.31 ± 0. 03 Ma), (2) syn-volcanic (between 22.78 ± 0,03 and 18.5 ± 0.4 Ma), (3) Tertiary(?) post-volcanic ( < 14.7 ± 0.4 Ma), and ( 4) Pliocene(?) - Quaternary. Four fault sets are delineated based on orientation and cross-cutting relationships: (I) northeast- to northwest-striking moderately dipping prevolcanic faults, (2) east-west striking, steeply-dipping syn-volcanic faults, (3) east-west- and east-northeast-striking, steeply dipping Tertiary(?) post-volcanic faults, and (4) generally north-striking steeply dipping Pliocene (?) - Quaternary faults.

Prevolcanic faults in the northern Hiko Range are interpreted to be footwall faults to an Oligocene age extensional system. These faults increase the area affected by Oligocene extension and support existing evidence that suggests this event is widespread.

A tectonomagmatic rift model has been proposed to explain synvolcanic extension during the Tertiary in the northern Basin and Range …

This beamline is designed to achieve the goal of high brightness at the sample for use in the x‐ray atomic and molecular spectroscopy (XAMS) science, surface and interface science, biology and x‐ray optical development programs at ALS. X‐ray absorption and time‐of‐flight photoemission measurements in 2–5 keV photon energy range along with the flux, resolution, spot size and stability of the beamline will be discussed. Prospects for future XAMS measurements will also be presented.

Post-Collision Interactions In The Auger Decay Of The Ar L-Shell, James A.R. Samson, Wayne C. Stolte, Z. X. He, J. N. Cutler, D. Hansen Sep 1996

Post-Collision Interactions In The Auger Decay Of The Ar L-Shell, James A.R. Samson, Wayne C. Stolte, Z. X. He, J. N. Cutler, D. Hansen

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

The photoionization cross sections for Ar+ through Ar4+, produced by the Auger decay of a 2p hole in argon, have been measured between 242 eV and 253 eV by the use of synchrotron radiation. The high resolution of the monochromator has allowed a detailed study of the postcollision interactions that occur in this spectral region. The concept of photoelectron recapture by Ar2+ to produce the Ar+ continuum is studied. The relative values of the quantum-mechanical calculations of the photoelectron recapture probability are shown to be in excellent agreement with the present data. The magnitude …

Cross Sections For The Production Of He+ (Np) 2p0 States By 50 To 150 Kev Proton Impact On Helium, Wayne C. Stolte, R. Bruch Sep 1996

Cross Sections For The Production Of He+ (Np) 2p0 States By 50 To 150 Kev Proton Impact On Helium, Wayne C. Stolte, R. Bruch

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Cross sections have been measured for the production of He+ (np) 2Po states, n=2,3,4, by proton impact on helium over a projectile velocity range of 1.42–2.45 a.u. (50 ≤E≤150 keV). Cross sections were determined by measuring the extreme ultraviolet photons emitted from excited He1 ions. The data indicate a lower energy than expected for the maximum cross section. A comparison of the present results in terms of projectile energy dependance with the cross sections for excitation to He (1snp) 1Po, ionization, and total electron capture suggests the primary mechanism …

Kinetic-Energy- And Angular-Resolved Fragmentation Of Co In Vibrational-Resolved C 1s Excitation, N. Saito, Franz Heiser, Oliver Hemmers, K. Wieliczek, J. Viefhaus, U. Becker Sep 1996

Kinetic-Energy- And Angular-Resolved Fragmentation Of Co In Vibrational-Resolved C 1s Excitation, N. Saito, Franz Heiser, Oliver Hemmers, K. Wieliczek, J. Viefhaus, U. Becker

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Angular distributions of C++O+ from CO were measured, following vibrationally resolved C 1s excitations into the 2pπ, 3sσ, and 3pπ orbitals as well as into higher unresolved orbitals. A time-of-flight mass spectrometer, with a multihit-type position-sensitive anode, was used for the measurements. The anisotropy parameters (β) of C++O+ approach their theoretically expected values as the released kinetic energy in the fragmentation increases. The value of the β parameters remains constant for all vibrational states within each orbital.

Hydrostratigraphy And Allostratigraphy Of The Cenozoic Alluvium In The Northwestern Part Of Las Vegas Valley, Clark County, Nevada, David J. Donovan Aug 1996

Hydrostratigraphy And Allostratigraphy Of The Cenozoic Alluvium In The Northwestern Part Of Las Vegas Valley, Clark County, Nevada, David J. Donovan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This investigation was conducted to determine the location, nature, and boundaries of the most permeable unit within the alluvial aquifer material in Las Vegas Valley. It was prompted by declines in specific capacity of about 90% at the Las Vegas Valley Water District's West Central Well Field. It was hypothesized that the decline in specific capacity resulted from dewatering of the most permeable interval of the alluvium. Lithologic descriptions from wells and aquifer test information were analyzed for geologic and hydrogeologic variability. New information, in the form of detailed unpublished lithologic and hydrologic information, was available from twenty water wells …

The Petrogenesis Of Andesites Produced During Regional Extension: Examples From The Northern Mccullough Range, Nv And Xitle Volcano, Mexico, Kelly Ann Boland

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Andesite dominated volcanic systems produced during regional crustal extension remain a relatively unexplored aspect of andesite petrogenesis. In the southern Basin and Range province, thick sections of andesite and basaltic andesite have been documented in areas including the Piute Range, California, the Eldorado Range, Nevada, and the McCullough Range, Nevada. The northern McCullough Range, located 20 miles south-southeast of Las Vegas, is an ideal place to study the petrogenesis of an andesite dominated system. This area contains a mid-Miocene stratocone composed mainly of a 1200 m thick section of andesite flows that formed synchronous with regional extension.

The northern McCullough …

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock Jul 1996

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The environmental degradation caused by beef production is severe. The current literature assesses the ecological damage, but falls short of assigning a per pound dollar amount to reflect the real cost of beef. In the United States, most of the environmental focus has been centered around the use of public lands for grazing and the grazing fee the government considers appropriate. The fee covers the maintenance of the grazing program, which includes maintenance of the actual land. This paper will concentrate on beef-related environmental degradation and select specific damage for monetary valuation.
