Toward An Integrated, Whole Community Model Of Dropout Prevention, Michael Baizerman, Donald Compton
Toward An Integrated, Whole Community Model Of Dropout Prevention, Michael Baizerman, Donald Compton
Partnerships/Community
As part of a statewide evaluation of dropout prevention programs in Virginia, survey data were collected statewide from school district dropout prevention coordinators. Ninety-four of the 103 school divisions (91 %) receiving state funds for dropout prevention responded to the survey. In addition, school staff were interviewed as part of a case study of seven schools to identify approaches to improving parent and community involvement, and focus groups were conducted with community agency representatives and parents. The interview data were analyzed using Joyce Epstein's model (see Table I) which organizes practical actions and likely outcomes for five types of parent …

Individuals With Disabilities Performing Service Topic Bibliography, Robin Vue Benson, Robert D. Shumer, Madeleine S. Hengel, Craig Hollander
Bibliographies
Disabled and special needs populations have frequently been the beneficiaries of service-learning programs. In this revised version of an earlier introduction to service-learning and special needs individuals we add new studies that illustrate the use of service for disabled individuals as both recipients and deliverers of program activity. Our goal is to provide information on the value of service for special needs populations and programs.
The items in this bibliography were obtained through searches of the ERIC database, our own collection of material, and selected websites dealing with special needs programs. These searches have significantly expanded the number of items …

Project Summaries
We are delighted that you have agreed to participate in this exciting opportunity for TVI faculty and students to become involved in Service-Learning!
The concept of service-learning is not new, of course, but in the past decade, many higher education professionals have taken the lead in promoting this as an essential dimension of the college experience. Campus Compact, for example is a consortium of over 500 college presidents who have mandated integrating service programs into their institutions. Simultaneously, the American Association of Community Colleges has recently awarded 15 grants to community colleges to create Learn and Serve Program, to develop …

Defining Excellence For School-Linked Services, Esther Wattenberg, Yvonne Pearson
School K-12
For more than a decade there has been great interest in educational circles about school-linked services ways by which children can receive the full range of social services they need to enter their classrooms ready to learn and parents can get the help they need to support their children's development. This publication presents summaries of the proceedings from a day-long conference on school-linked services. The following presentations are summarized:(1) "Welcoming Remarks" (Esther Wattenberg) ;(2) "Anchoring School-Linked Services in Sobering Realities: A Glance at the Past and a Searching Stare at the Present" (Paula Allen Meares);(3)"Response from School Social Workers: A …
Measuring Program Outcomes: A Practical Approach, United Way Of America
Measuring Program Outcomes: A Practical Approach, United Way Of America
Evaluation/Reflection
If yours is like most human service agencies or youth- and family-serving organizations, you regularly report on how much money you receive, how many staff and volunteers you have, and what they do in your programs. You know how many individuals participate in your programs, how many hours you spend serving them, and how many brochures or classes or counseling sessions you produce. In other words, you document program inputs, activities, and outputs.

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Nova Training Model, Melody Moore-Richardson
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Nova Training Model, Melody Moore-Richardson
Student Work
In this study the effectiveness of the Nova training model for training foster parents was examined. A pre-test and post-test was designed to assess change in attitudes and knowledge of parenting skills over a six session training program. Thirty foster parents were given a pre-test before training and a post-test upon completion of training. The data analysis showed that training increased significantly the knowledge of the trainees about foster parenting, but attitudes about foster parenting did not change significantly. The finding that training increased foster parenting knowledge needs to be viewed with some caution because other factors, which were not …

Pushing The Boundaries Of Education: The Implications Of A Youth Development Approach To Education Policies, Structures And Collabnrations, Karen J. Pittman, Michele Cahill
School K-12
In recent years there have been an extraordinary number of proposals for comprehensive and intensive changes in school structure, finance, and administration, one indication that this is a time of unprecedent change for schools. One of the forces driving this intense focus on school change is the growing national concern about youth issues and problems. This paper notes the myriad of add-on programs that compete for space in the school day and takes the position that, rather than being seen as merely additive, education and services should be viewed as interactive, and essential to the formation of new effective strategies for …
Designing Computer-Based Writing Tools For Community Action, David Fleming
Designing Computer-Based Writing Tools For Community Action, David Fleming
Special Topics, General
Most word and information processing systems arc designed for either large institutions or individual users. Institutions, of course, have benefitted greatly from emerging technologies. These users cover the spectrum of our economic, political, social, and cultural life: large corporations, banks, insurance companies, government agencies, schools, universities, armed services, hospitals, the media. Individual users have been more recent beneficiaries of technological advances, and the computer has begun to make inroads into the way people interact with one another, manage their affairs, and entertain themselves.
The Social Policy Implications Of Intergenerational Exchange, Eric R. Kingston
The Social Policy Implications Of Intergenerational Exchange, Eric R. Kingston
Intergenerational
This paper discusses why there is a growing need for intergenerational programs and approaches to public policy. It suggests they provide some important and unique contributions to contemporary American society. These contributions include responding to challenges emerging from an aging society; by developing productive roles for the aging population, bridging stereotypes associated with age, and promoting understanding between the generations that discourages generational competition;. These programs and policies can support families and communit;es through their involvement in family caregiving and the linking of community agencies.

From Victim To Aggressor: The Impact Of Child Abuse On Violent Juvenile Delinguency, Mary-Elizabeth Lynn Pate
From Victim To Aggressor: The Impact Of Child Abuse On Violent Juvenile Delinguency, Mary-Elizabeth Lynn Pate
Student Work
Two of the major social issues demanding attention from the criminal justice system today are violent juvenile crime and the abuse of children. Neither of these problems shares in the general declining trend of other forms of crime. For the five-year period from 1980-84, arrests for crimes of violence increased by four percent, while index crime arrests as a whole decreased (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1985). Among juveniles aged 16 through 18, 1983 arrest rates for violent crimes showed an increase over the two previous years. Estimates of the incidence of child abuse vary from 200,000 to 1 1/2 million …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Mid-Continent City Crime Rates: A Multivariate Analysis," by Ralph H. Todd.
Preliminary crime data (1975) provided the basis for analysis of variations in major crime among cities of the MidContinent Region. The Uniform Crime Reports measure seven Crime Index Offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft. Remaining criminal offenses were not considered in this study. Crime rates per 100,000 population were compiled using the FBI Uniform Crime Reports and current population estimates (Table 1 ).
