The Victim-Offender Relationship: Does It Affect Sentencing?, Denise Olson
The Victim-Offender Relationship: Does It Affect Sentencing?, Denise Olson
Student Work
This study explores the victim-offender relationship and its effect on sentence severity. Data on felony offenders sentenced in 1993 in Cook County (Chicago, IL) is used to test two hypotheses on the effect of the victim-offender relationship on the decisions to incarcerate and sentence length. From prior research, it is hypothesized that stranger offenders are more likely to be sentenced to prison and to receive longer prison sentences than non-strangers to the victim. The analyses performed reveal that sentence severity is not affected by the victim-offender relationship, but rather is determined by primarily legal factors. The decision to incarcerate and …

The Impact Of Boot Camps And Traditional Institutions On Juvenile Residents: Perceptions, Adjustment, And Change, Doris Layton Mackenzie, David B. Wilson, Gaylene Armstrong, Angela Gover
The Impact Of Boot Camps And Traditional Institutions On Juvenile Residents: Perceptions, Adjustment, And Change, Doris Layton Mackenzie, David B. Wilson, Gaylene Armstrong, Angela Gover
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Experiences of 2,668 juveniles in 26 boot camps were compared to 1,848 juveniles in 22 traditional facilities. There were no reported differences between juveniles' anxiety and depression in the two types of facilities during their first month of confinement. Overall, juveniles in boot camps perceived their environment to be more positive (i.e., therapeutic), less hostile (i.e., dangerous), and as providing less freedom (conversely more structure) than juveniles in traditional facilities. Relative to others in the same facility, youth who viewed their facility negatively experienced more stress (i.e., anxiety, depression). Scales measuring changes over time found that youth in boot camps …

The Influences Of Personal Background On Perceptions Of Juvenile Correctional Environments, Ojmarrh Mitchell, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Angela Gover, Gaylene Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This study examined whether the individual characteristics of race, sex, and education affect juvenile correctional staff's perceptions of their work environments. Prior to 1970, correctional staff were minimally educated and predominantly comprised of White males. Correctional reformers believed that employing more female, minority, and highly educated staff members would lead to more efficacious correctional environments. The existing research conducted in adult correctional facilities not only calls this belief into question, but also indicates that the hiring of nontraditional staff may have exacerbated existing internal hostilities. These research efforts uniformly examined adult correctional institutions, however. This study examined these issues in …

The Bridging Role Of The Community Service Director On The Engaged Campus, Joann Campbell
The Bridging Role Of The Community Service Director On The Engaged Campus, Joann Campbell
Higher Education
Declines in civic participation, low voting rates among 18-25 year olds, dwindling federal support for social services, and deficit state budgets have created a climate in which higher education must make a case for the value it adds to society through applications of research and teaching. National and state organizations (such as Campus Compact and state Compacts) dedicated to supporting a culture of service in higher education articulate the university's role as a collective citizen, whose priorities include linking scholarship to community-based needs, using the resources of the college faculty for professional local service, and utilizing federal work study, America …

Nurturing Future Leaders Via Service-Learning, John T. Boal
School K-12
Coming into the ninth grade, Jon Porges was admittedly "a shy guy" who had a learning disability and who had never volunteered in his life, but when he sat down in freshman English class at Waterford High School in Waterford, Connecticut, in 1996, a slow transformation - life a cocoon becoming a butterfly - took place.

Bibliographies
This publication is the result of a comprehensive review of the literature on resiliency and at-risk youth. Some of the most frequently asked questions at the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse are geared toward service-learning as it relates to working with at-risk youth. Often the questions are about research on impacts of service-learning on at-risk youth, or about materials that have been developed to help start service-learning programs for at-risk youth. Information on program examples and national organizations is also in demand. The purpose of this bibliography is to direct you to some of the most reliable, innovative, and popular resources currently …

Youth Civic Development: Implications Of Research For Social Policy And Programs, Constance A. Flanagan, Nakesha Faison
Civic Engagement
Democracies must insure that each new generation of citizens identify with the common good and become engaged members of their communities. Such goals are prominent in the missions of public schools and community youth organizations. This report summarizes research which points to directions youth programs and policies should follow to achieve these civic goals.
Measurement Of Physical Discipline Practices: Is It Potato Or Potata? Tomato Or Tomata? Or, Should We Call The Whole Thing Off? An Analysis Of The Different Measures Of Physical Discipline On The Intergenerational Transmission Of Violence Hypotheses, Jeremy D. Ball
Student Work
The intergenerational transmission of violence hypothesis has been stated in four general ways: “abuse breeds abuse,” “abuse breeds crime,” “abuse breeds violent crime,” and “abuse breeds a life of crime.” Scholars have disagreed as to whether abuse is a dichotomous concept or not- that is, abuse or no abuse. Some researchers have suggested that abuse is on a continuum of severity and frequency of physical discipline ranging from a slap or a spank to the more violent abusive practices such as beatings and burnings. The current study examines the intergenerational transmission of violence hypotheses using this broader concept. The question …
Gender Differences In The Effect Of Child Maltreatment On Criminal Activity Over The Life Course, Ryan E. Spohn
Gender Differences In The Effect Of Child Maltreatment On Criminal Activity Over The Life Course, Ryan E. Spohn
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This paper adds to a growing body of knowledge regarding the criminal consequences of childhood victimization. A prospective research design is used to compare a group of maltreated youth to a matched control group in order to determine the extent to which child abuse and neglect influence both juvenile delinquency and adult crime. Controlling for race and sex, abused and neglected children are more likely to have a juvenile arrest record. In addition, controlling for involvement in juvenile crime, child maltreatment also influences adult criminality. Motivated by the findings of qualitative studies focusing on female offenders, I examine gender differences …

The Douglas County Drug Court: A Comparison Of Recidivism Rates Between Drug Court Participants And Traditionally Adjudicated Drug Offenders, Erika Davis Frenzel
The Douglas County Drug Court: A Comparison Of Recidivism Rates Between Drug Court Participants And Traditionally Adjudicated Drug Offenders, Erika Davis Frenzel
Student Work
Over the years there have been large increases in the number of drug offenders arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced to prison. These increases have lead to an overload of the criminal justice system. This overload prompted states to develop new responses to substance use and drug-related crime. One such innovation is the drug treatment court, which combines accountability and treatment. The goal of these courts is to reduce recidivism and substance use among drug-involved criminal offenders. This study uses data from Douglas County (Nebraska) to compare recidivism rates for participants in the Douglas County Drug Court and traditionally adjudicated drug offenders. …
Is There Hope For Our Children?: An Evaluation Of A Drug Resistant Education Program, Gerald Johnson
Is There Hope For Our Children?: An Evaluation Of A Drug Resistant Education Program, Gerald Johnson
Student Work
Despite the abundance of drug prevention programs in this country, drug usage among America’s youth continues to grow. This project will examine one emerging school-based prevention program designed to develop resistance skills that have been proven to help students oppose those risky behaviors. Prior to this examination the extent of drug use by American school children is discussed, followed by an extensive literature review evaluation. The main body of the thesis is a description of the All Stars Jr. Program, with an assessment and evaluation of the program’s implementation. Finally, a discussion of how these findings impact the program performance …
