How Does The Stay Interview Impact The Future Of Retaining Educators?, Andrew Bell
How Does The Stay Interview Impact The Future Of Retaining Educators?, Andrew Bell
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The teaching profession is constantly evolving, making the retention of educators increasingly competitive and challenging. As districts create innovative incentives and strategies to attract both new and experienced talent, the role of the principal has become more demanding, particularly in the search for qualified educators to meet the needs of students.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the experiences and perspectives of nine principals from elementary, middle, high schools, and young adult programs, with a focus on how stay interviews impact the future of retaining educators. The research was conducted through a series of semi-structured interviews. The …

Risk-needs assessments (RNAs) are an evidence-based practice used by practitioners to assign supervision and programming. While foundational to day-to-day practices, these tools are typically applied ‘off-the shelf,’ and are mistakenly assumed to demonstrate equivalent prediction accuracy regardless of location or population. Although researchers and providers are aware these tools experience performance shrinkage, the issue is commonly ignored. In 2016 the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) collaborated with the developers of the Static Risk Offender Needs Guide – Revised (STRONG-R) to create a staged development of a locally developed risk needs assessment. Using propensity score matching, a proxy sample was used …

Widely used sources of crime data, such as the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), provide invaluable information on patterns in reported crime and justice processing. Yet, due to their measurement of crime at the incident level, these data have not been used to determine an individual’s likelihood of justice system involvement. By contrast, in the correctional field, individuals are used as the unit of analysis and common definitions to establish state-level base rates. Used for decades, base rates provide an estimate of justice system involvement, per individual, for a given jurisdiction’s population.

Assessing Archival Instruction Through An Active Learning Survey, Claire Du Laney Dunker
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In this lighting round, I will address the instruction assessment project I have been working on informally since Spring of 2021 and more formally starting in Spring 2023 with an active-learning survey. The survey is organized so that students can follow along during an archival and history instruction session and answer questions or conduct discreet research instances while I am teaching.
Assessing The Theoretical Correlates Of Sexual And Physical Victimization In Adulthood, Morgan Goslar
Assessing The Theoretical Correlates Of Sexual And Physical Victimization In Adulthood, Morgan Goslar
Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations
As research on victimization continues to adapt, scholars have begun to examine how certain variables in childhood affect the likelihood of being victimized in adulthood—much of which is focused on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Studying the impact of early experiences on later victimization outcomes is important for the field so practitioners can intervene early in an individual’s life before they experience further trauma. However, past research has neglected to use a comprehensive approach (e.g., using multiple theoretical frameworks, assessing the frequency of ACE occurrences). The current study addresses these gaps in the literature by assessing the impact of variables related …

Social Media Engagement And Mobilization To Extremist Violence, Lauren Moss
Social Media Engagement And Mobilization To Extremist Violence, Lauren Moss
Political Science Theses, Dissertations and Student Creative Activity
This thesis investigates how engagement with extremist communities on social media correlates with increased violent mobilization among radicalized individuals. It argues that as individuals strengthen their ties to extremist groups online, they increasingly identify with these communities and adopt behaviors endorsed by them. This paper explores various levels of online engagement, from passive interactions to more active involvement, as well as factors to mobilization exhibited as observable behaviors both in person and online. Comparative analysis of two violent and two nonviolent adherents of the Boogaloo ideology reveals ten unique mobilizing indicators in violent cases. When compared against the social media …
The Impact Of Healthcare Interprofessional Education On Collaboration., Mya Winjum
The Impact Of Healthcare Interprofessional Education On Collaboration., Mya Winjum
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Interprofessional relationships are important to the productivity of healthcare teams, especially as collaborative approaches become increasingly common in the healthcare setting. This paper focuses on the impacts of interprofessionalism and interprofessional education on healthcare teams collaborations. Drawing from a mixed-methods approach, data was gathered through an online survey and interviews conducted at the UNMC GOODLIFE Clinic, a student-run clinic. Findings reveal differences in perceptions between post-graduate professionals and students regarding the role and importance of interprofessionalism. While professionals demonstrate an understanding of IP collaboration, students express a need for more comprehensive IPE. Barriers to effective teamwork, such as professional hierarchies …
That Way: An Examination Of Male Relationships In Film During The Hays Code, Jane Knudsen
That Way: An Examination Of Male Relationships In Film During The Hays Code, Jane Knudsen
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The Hays Code (1934-1968) influenced the construct of United States masculinity and the discourse surrounding masculine presentation between the 1920s to the 1960s. The Hays Code and World War II affected the culture surrounding male/male relationships in the United States. Previous research done by David Lugowski (1999) and Jeffrey Suzik (1999) shows that both World Wars led to crises of masculinity in which the hegemonic ideal of masculinity was restructured to establish men as providers and warriors, and Code-era films reflected the discourse. To understand the gender roles in the 20th century, I analyzed the Hays code, male bonds, …
Implementing Instructional And Assessment Strategies To Improve Student Success In Art, Hayden Thomaier
Implementing Instructional And Assessment Strategies To Improve Student Success In Art, Hayden Thomaier
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
For my honors capstone project, I taught a 3-week unit to my Art III class at a suburban high school in Nebraska. This unit covered concepts such as color theory, composition, and how to create the illusion of depth within a piece of art. This unit ended with the students creating a 24x30 in. painting of a space that was personal to them. The instructional strategies that I used throughout the unit included learning objectives, providing feedback, and nonlinguistic forms of representation. The assessment strategies I used included a pre and post-assessment at the beginning and end of the unit, …
The Impact Of Policy And Perception On Women’S Health Since 2010, Eryn Busenbark
The Impact Of Policy And Perception On Women’S Health Since 2010, Eryn Busenbark
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This project tackles the complicated relationship between policy and perception of women’s health in the last decade. This was achieved through research on existing literature and semi-structured interviews with five professionals in various areas of women’s health: mental health, public policy, sexual health education, and research. Literature reviews were conducted using University of Nebraska at Omaha Criss Library’s databases, with dozens of articles analyzed. The goal of this research was to gain an understanding of how public opinion and perceptions can sway policy, which has created challenges and consequences for women and their health.
To Tip Or Not To Tip: An Analysis Into Prompted Tipping, Jared Dingman
To Tip Or Not To Tip: An Analysis Into Prompted Tipping, Jared Dingman
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Giving tips (or gratuities) in restaurants in the United States has been and is currently a hotly debated and discussed topic. Concerns regarding proper compensation have been raised, but there is a need for empirical evidence to investigate and solve potential issues of compensation. This honors thesis aimed to answer two questions: Whether restaurant patrons tip more when prompted with tipping percentages, and whether those who have worked in the tipping industry tip more than those who have not. I administered a brief survey with tipping scenarios to gauge prompted and unprompted tipping behaviors. With these scenarios, demographic information was …
Mental Representations Of Surface- And Deep-Level Diversity, Alexandria S. Vandenberg
Mental Representations Of Surface- And Deep-Level Diversity, Alexandria S. Vandenberg
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Conservatives exhibit backlash to surface-level diversity initiatives (e.g., race-based initiatives), but view deep-level diversity (e.g., ideological diversity) positively. I examined whether conservative preferences for deep- (vs. surface-level) diversity reflects preferences for different forms of diversity, or preferences for forms of diversity that may advantage White people. In one pre-registered two wave study (Total N = 600) I examined liberals’ and conservatives’ perceptions and mental representations of surface- (vs. deep-level) diversity using a reverse correlation task. Images were then rated with respect to perceived race and stereotype-relevant attributes. As expected, participants perceived organizations that emphasized surface- vs. deep-level diversity to be …

Research finds that individuals of dark complexions are more likely to face prejudice or be discriminated against in a variety of contexts. Referred to as colorism, skin-tone-based discrimination has major implications for various life outcomes. Research on social interactions suggests that lighter skin tones are associated with a higher level of physical attractiveness, which is of particular interest for this study. This study uses quantitative survey data collected from undergraduate and graduate students from across the United States to explore the relationship between colorism, gender, and perceived physical attraction via a modified version of Harvey, Tennial, and Bank’s In-Group Colorism …

Purpose
Used to reduce detention, bail/bond, and jail, pretrial risk assessments (PRAs) applications have expanded in the last decade. Yet, many PRAs are created with a unique population, adopted ‘off-the-shelf’ in a new location, reducing the tool's accuracy and functionality. Further, many PRAs are created with criminal history indicators, increasing concerns of prediction bias. The current study described the development of the Personal Recognizance Interview & Needs Screen (PRINS).Methods
Using a multistage development process and large sample (N = 28,147) of defendants, we created a tool that combines static and dynamic indicators, gender-responsive modeling, in the prediction of …Experiences Of Recent Nebraska Stem Teachers Who Have Left Teaching, Courtney N. Matulka
Experiences Of Recent Nebraska Stem Teachers Who Have Left Teaching, Courtney N. Matulka
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Teacher shortages in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields have long been a concern, yet contemporary challenges present a unique predicament. Despite historical recruitment successes, the persistence of this issue has led to temporary solutions that often fall short of addressing the root causes. Consequently, school districts resort to hiring individuals lacking proper certification or expertise, or relying on substitutes, to fill crucial STEM teaching positions. Student academic achievements can be impacted as effective STEM instruction demands not only a deep understanding of the subject matter content but also robust pedagogical practices. To shed light on the complexities surrounding …

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
During the fall semester of 2023, my honors project aimed to provide representation and shed light on the challenges Knyaw/Karen women encounter as part of their womanhood in traditional and Western communities. The issues are emphasized when these women receive life-altering health diagnosis that not only alters their identities but also requires them to step beyond the invisible parameters of what it means to be a Knyaw/Karen woman. It's worth noting that all the women I interviewed were immigrants from the Thai-Burma Border refugee Camps where Indigenous Knyaw people have been facing at least 70 years of genocide. The project …

Many U.S. cities witnessed both de-policing and increased crime in 2020, yet whether the former contributed to the latter remains unclear. Indeed, much of what is known about the effects of proactive policing on crime comes from studies that evaluated highly focused interventions atypical of day-to-day policing, used cities as the unit of analysis, or could not rule out endogeneity. This study addresses each of these issues, thereby advancing the evidence base concerning the effects of policing on crime. Leveraging two exogenous shocks presented by the onset of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and social unrest after the murder of …

Despite persistent support for increasing gender diversity in US policing, women remain underrepresented. Yet, barriers to women in policing are not universal. Many police organizations in the USA and internationally have implemented promising gender-responsive approaches. The International and Nebraska Associations of Women Police (IAWP/NAWP) and UN Women convened a Gender-Responsive Policing Summit to share successful efforts to improve recruitment, retention, promotion, and wellness of women in policing. Researchers conducted systematic observations of Summit sessions, paying particular attention to solutions offered to advance gender-responsive policing. This instrumental case study summarizes lessons learned based on multistage inductive coding of Summit observation notes. …

Women bring many benefits to policing but represent only 14% of sworn police in the United States. Researchers have examined different recruitment strategies, yet few have sought insight from women officers themselves. We explored women officers’ perspectives on recruiting and retaining more women in policing. Using semi-structured interviews, we asked 40 current and retired women officers how police agencies can better target women to increase their representation. Responses were analyzed using open coding techniques. Participants noted difficulty hiring amid a larger police staffing crisis. They also discussed the structure and culture of police work as barriers to the recruitment and …
