This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "An Analysis of the Omaha Apartment Market," by Donald A. Nielsen and John P. Zipay.

The housing construction industry has always been looked on as one of the key indicators of the American economy. When the economy was soaring, the housing industry often saw favorable conditions. In the past several years, however, it has not seen the best of times. New residential starts, both locally and nationally, appear to be headed for a 1981 total that falls far below the levels of only a few years ago.

The Urban Renewal Movement In Omaha, 1954-1970, Donald Louis Stevens Jr.

Student Work

By 1954, the year President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a national housing act, one hundred years had passed since a group of Iowa businessmen crossed the Missouri River and surveyed Omaha City. The townsite formed the only metropolis in Nebraska at the midpoint of the twentieth century. Suffering from age and neglect, sections in and around the downtown core of Omaha became the object of a controversial crusade by civic leaders. A variety of business, labor, professional and government interests accepted the Eisenhower legislation as a practical way to rebuild the deteriorated areas. The law contained a slum clearance scheme …

A Study To Determine The Effects Of A Speech Communication Course In Junior High On An Adolescent's Self Concept, Sherilyn Marrow Filkins

Student Work

Human behavior is a reflection of the many attitudes, beliefs, values, and cognitive processes of the individual. It has been theorized that self concept, or the way a person perceives his self image, acts as an integral force in directing many of those behaviors.1 According to research by Brownfain, a person with a high regard for self, or a positive self concept, exhibits more socially acceptable behaviors. Conversely, when a person has a low regard for self a variety of maladjusted and neurotic behaviors are displayed. 2 A conclusion of research concerning behavior and self concept may be summarized: …

Long-Term Effects Of Community Service Programs, James Beane, Joan Turner, David Jones, Richard Lipka

Service Learning, General

The need to develop connections between life in the school and that in the community is a recurring theme in educational literature. Of the many means for doing this, one of the more prominent is experiential learning or "planned opportunities for learning outside the classroom" (Hamilton 1980). Within the experiential learning concept, one variation which has received a good deal of attention is youth participation programs or community service projects (Olsen 1946; National Society for the Study of Education 1953; Harnack 1974; Coleman 1974; National Commission on Resources for Youth 1974). Such programs involve the active engagement of youth in …

To many households, buying a home represents the largest single investment they will make, and the monthly mortgage payment accounts for the largest single item of household expenditures.

Ten eastern Nebraska tallgrass prairie remnants, varying in size from 1-18 ha, were evaluated for floristic composition at four times during the 1979 growing season. A total of 153 species were recorded of which seven dominated: Andropogon gerardii, A. scoparius, Bromus inermis, Ceanothus americanus, Heliopsis helianthodies, Poa pratensis, and Stipa spartea. Floristic composition, however, varied with respect to management, topography, season of evaluation, and prairie size. Frequent mowing reduced canopy cover of native species, such as Andropogon gerardii, by 21% while increasing that of non-native species, such as Bromus inermis, by 35%. Exploratory Study Of Factors Associated With Police Officer Turnover In Rural Police Departments, Thomas B. Miller

As the months and years passed, it seemed as though the researcher was frequently being introduced to new officers who had replaced other officers at the respective departments while at the same time, the size of the departments remained relatively constant. Officials involved in the employment procedures almost always gave …
