Possible research questions were shared with the committee. The author met with Malcom to obtain lists of names of high school graduates.

Earlier, OPS conducted a survey of its high school graduates and developed a list of …

Dewey's Theory Of Experience: Implications For Service-Learning, Dwight E. Giles

Service Learning, General

Cornell’s Dwight Giles, Jr. relates John Dewey’s concept about education and experience to service-learning. Giles suggest a dialectical interaction between service and learning, which had implications for ensuring quality in service learning programs and for defining service-learning as a philosophy rather than as a type of program.

The Boys Town Hall Of History: A Case Study In Public History And Exhibition Methods, Jacqueline Ann Mcglade

Student Work

Present-day historians are extremely fortunate. Increased public interest in history has afforded historians the opportunity to expand their professional influence and convey their scholarship through new forms of communication. In order to satisfy a public hunger for history, historians must learn to use information methods rooted in popular appeal and leisure-time activities. Among the current options, the display of linear history and material culture through exhibitions is one of the most overlooked and understudied areas in public history.

The Effects Of Service Activities On Adolescent Alienation, Raymond L. Calabrese, Harry Schumer

School K-12

This research evaluated the effects of involvement of adolescents in community service activities on levels of alienation. It was proposed that alienation could be reduced through the implementation of a model which utilized community service activities to facilitate adolescent access to adult society, development of responsibility, collaborative and cooperative work, and control over planning and outcomes. It is suggested that adolescent involvement in service activities can produce positive benefits, among which are reduced levels of alienation, improved school behavior, improved grade point average, and acceptance by the adult community. These findings also suggest that females respond more positively to school …

Preliminary Study Of The Homeless In Omaha-Douglas County, Jeff Luke Aug 1986

Preliminary Study Of The Homeless In Omaha-Douglas County, Jeff Luke

Publications

Homelessness is not a new phenomenon. The period between the Civil War and World War I, for example, witnessed a large increase in predominantly male transients who followed an active labor market and formed a highly visible subcommunity called skid row. Today's homeless population, however, includes more women, children, and minorities and fewer single men and drifters than previous populations. In addition to changes in the demographic composition of the homeless population, most experts agree that the problem of homelessness is increasing.

Subjects range from fundamentalist ministers seeking public office to the impact of secular feminism on the viewpoints of certain denominations with respect to the topic of the ordination of women. Determinants Of Wage Satisfaction, Clare Gertsch

Student Work

The role of sensitivity to social comparison information was investigated with regard to perceptions of equity and subsequent satisfaction with pay. Subjects were 64 undergraduate students. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was employed. The three factors were (a) Equity, (b) Adequacy of pay, and (c) Sensitivity to social comparison information. Predicted main effects of equity and adequacy of pay on wage satisfaction were found. A predicted interaction of Equity x Sensitivity to Social Comparison Information was not found. Interpretation of the failure of this prediction focused on the personality scale employed.

Use Of The Analysis Of Variance Model For Investigating Disposition Decisions Of Judges And Probation Officers, William E. Reay Jul 1986

Use Of The Analysis Of Variance Model For Investigating Disposition Decisions Of Judges And Probation Officers, William E. Reay

Student Work

The Analysis of Variance model was used to investigate differential disposition decisions from least restrictive to most restrictive court placement based on juvenile and family characteristics. Eight Juvenile and County Court Judges in Experiment I and 20 State Juvenile Probation Officers in Experiment II judged six behavioral-emotional signs in various combinations of presence or absence. The results were consistent with previous findings that a linear model more than adequately accounts for the variability of the subjects responses. The high interjudge agreement correlations and test-retest reliability estimates strongly suggest that Judges and Probation Officers can render reliable and consistent judgments, and …

The Perceived Credibility Of Masculine, Feminine And Androgynous Women In Middle Management, Priscilla Carpenter Apr 1986

The Perceived Credibility Of Masculine, Feminine And Androgynous Women In Middle Management, Priscilla Carpenter

Student Work

Throughout the literatureon attributes and behaviors for effective female leadership, writers disagree as to which sex-role and sex-characteristics should be emphasized. If a woman behaves according to the stereotype, she is of little value to the organization. However, if the woman is "unfeminine," she is not accepted either. This is due to the in compatibility of a woman's task competence and sexuality (i .e., role conflict). The extent to which women who achieve success using stereotypical masculine behaviors, such as aggressiveness, are viewed more or less favorably than women who use stereotypical feminine behaviors, such as in tuitiveness and sensitivity …

The Breton Case For Regional Autonomy: Centuries Of Struggle In Brittany, France, Annie Loring Peters Apr 1986

The Breton Case For Regional Autonomy: Centuries Of Struggle In Brittany, France, Annie Loring Peters

Student Work

My first encounter with Brittany, France, came in 1973 when I was bicycling through the Breton countryside with a group of Concordia College students. I befriended a Breton activist named Sylvain Phlipponneau, then twenty-one years of age, who made what I found to be an intriguing parallel between the plight of the American Indian and that of the outlying regions of France. He criticized the French government as over-bearing, excessively centralized, and with what he called a reckless disregard for the cultural integrity of the provinces. I was then seventeen, anxious to experience some of the residual youthful activism of …

Most communities in Nebraska experienced crease in net taxable sales during the early eighties. Nebraska City's decrease has not been as severe as that in other communities in southeast Nebraska, although the percentage decline was greater than the state average (table 1). This decrease in net taxable sales prompted the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce and the Business Improvement District Board to commission this market area analysis.

In individuals' aspiration, for better lives and as a primary component of the equation of education and community, education is viewed as an avenue of promise. There can be no doubt of its universal acceptance as the key to the most fervently desired goals, security for the future and an understanding of self and others.
