Community Service To The Elderly A Service-Learning Model: Guidelines For Replication, James M. Mccrea, Sherry G. Cottom Jan 1996

Community Service To The Elderly A Service-Learning Model: Guidelines For Replication, James M. Mccrea, Sherry G. Cottom

Curriculum

At the University of Pittsburgh, Generations Together, an Intergenerational Studies Program develops programs that bring young and old together in ways that benefit both generations. The University Challenge for Excellence Program (DCEP) works with entering students who are often first generation, mostly African-American, and who may be in need of special assistance during their first year. UCEP seeks ways to raise their self esteem, give them a sense of purpose, connect them to the University, and ultimately to retain them at Pitt through graduation. In 1994, these two university programs joined together with the Housing Authority of the City of …

Preparing The Way For Reform In Higher Education: Drawing Upon The Resources Of The Community-At-Large, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Higher education is being asked to pay more attention to student learning and to contribute to the enhancement of the social and economic conditions of the community it serves. As a result, educational institutions will no longer be self-contained Community members and organizations have become not only critical partners inframing the goals and intentions of the educational reform movement, but they also have assets that must be tapped by educational institutions that wish to implement change and respond to social needs

Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 26, No. 01, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

As mentioned in previous editions, one of the critical functions of this journal is to facilitate communication between researchers and practitioners working in community development. It is important to not only report on completed research, as is the major task of most research-based journals, but to also include comments from others who have reviewed the journal articles. Since this journal serves the needs of both researchers and practitioners it is necessary to stimulate a continuing dialogue among both groups on common community development topics.

Social Conditions Of Nebraska's Elderly, F. C. Powell, James A. Thorsen Oct 1994

Social Conditions Of Nebraska's Elderly, F. C. Powell, James A. Thorsen

Publications

In 1991, the authors conducted a study of 500 older Nebraskans, comparing 300 people in Omaha and its surrounding counties with a sample of 200 who lived in the very rural Sandhills counties. The purpose of that study was to compare health and health care experience and satisfaction between urban and rural-dwelling elders. Random samples of older people were identified and interviewed by trained telephone operators; each interview took about a half hour. People were asked about their experiences with health and illness, the distance to their primary source of medical care and the distance to the hospital they use, …

A Study Of Depression In Elderly Persons With Low Vision, Barry J. Jose Jul 1994

A Study Of Depression In Elderly Persons With Low Vision, Barry J. Jose

Student Work

Analysis of 67 elderly persons with low vision to determine if depression existed and to evaluate their social support networks was done by using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Measure. It was found that elderly patients with low vision are no more depressed than other groups provided they have a support network. It was also found that these patients were less depressed as a result of possessing a positive self-evaluation of their health. Finally, a support network will increase the likelihood that a positive self-evaluation of health will occur.

Prague, Nebraska: A Traditional Village In Modern Society, Gerald Wayne Allen May 1994

Prague, Nebraska: A Traditional Village In Modern Society, Gerald Wayne Allen

Student Work

The subject of this thesis is life satisfaction as it relates to older persons living in small, rural communities. Particularly, this study is concerned with potential low life satisfaction and loneliness due to limited interaction and increasing social isolation resulting from the decline of rural communities. The focus of the study, Prague, Nebraska, is a village that continues to survive as a social system in which community members, especially older residents, interact and live in a familiar, ongoing social environment. The study looks at the social processes of this small, rural community that has over the years redefined and solved …

Effects Of An Undergraduate Program To Integrate Academic Learning And Service: Cognitive, Prosocial Cognitive, And Identity Outcomes, Thomas H. Batchelder, Susan Root

Higher Education

The present study investigated the effects of key characteristics of service-learning experiences (such as autonomy, instructional support for the experience, and so on) on the cognitive, moral, and ego identity development of undergraduates. Participants in service-learning courses and control students wrote pre- and post-responses to social problems. Service-learning students· also completed weekly journals and an evaluation of their experiences. Results revealed significant gains for the service-learning participants on certain cognitive dimensions, such as awareness of multidimensionality. Aspects of the experience predicted cognitive gains as well as gains in prosocial reasoning. Paired 1-tests revealed significant increases in prosocial decision-making, prosocial reasoning …

Intergenerational Experience And Ontological Change, Thomas G. Mcgowan Jan 1994

Intergenerational Experience And Ontological Change, Thomas G. Mcgowan

Intergenerational

The phenomenological concept of ontological change, or change in self-understanding, is used to structure an analysis of the experiential impact of a college-based, intergenerational service-learning project. The semester-long project aimed to create interpersonal, intergenerational situations in which students (N = 12) could experience for themselves the lack of fit between their inherited assumptions regarding aging and the actual meaning of aging as experienced by elders. Content analysis of students' journals indicated that students experienced four temporally distinct types of experiences during the project. Students entered the project with an understanding as to how they should interact with their companions based …

What Do We Know About The Impact Of Field Based Programs On Students?, Janet Eyler, Dwight Giles Jr. Oct 1993

What Do We Know About The Impact Of Field Based Programs On Students?, Janet Eyler, Dwight Giles Jr.

Higher Education

The literature on field based education programs for undergraduates is voluminous, but surprisingly unhelpful in answering the most important question of all, "What difference does it make in the lives of students?" In this presentation we have focused on this largely unanswered question, first (1) examining the goals commonly held for such field experiential approaches as cooperative education, academic internships, field components of classes, and service learning then (2) discussing evidence for impact on students and finally (3) identifying critical gaps in our knowledge of how these programs affect students.

An appropriate objective within a liberal arts approach to education is enhancing students' awareness of attitudes toward their own aging. A combined intervention of intergenerational experience and didactic instruction had a favorable effect on students' attitudes toward older adults i11 general and on students' uie'w of their own later lives. Additional positive consequences are discussed, and suggestions for running similar curricular components are presented.

Saturday Morning Children's Television And Depictions Of Old Age, Marigrace H. Powers May 1992

Saturday Morning Children's Television And Depictions Of Old Age, Marigrace H. Powers

Student Work

As the percentage of people age 65 and older steadily increases in the United States, the "aging of America" and the manner in which the older segment of the population is depicted becomes an increasingly important issue. One nearly inescapable part of our everyday lives— the media (television, newspapers, magazines, and others)— provides a broad field of study for the issue of aging in American society. The present study investigated the depiction and frequency of appearance of older characters on Saturday morning children's television. Social learning theory posits that children learn from observation— both first-hand and through television. Thus, in …
