IPEDS Completions
Welcome to the IPEDS Completions survey component. The Completions component is one of several IPEDS components that is conducted during the Fall data collection period. It collects the number of degrees and certificates awarded by field of study, level of award, race/ethnicity, and gender. The reporting period for the Completions component is during the 12-month time period beginning July 1 of the previous calendar year and ending June 30 of the current calendar year; therefore, for this year’s Completions component, the reporting period is between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. The Completions component is also collecting the number …

Direct Care Workforce: The Shift Towards Nonmedical Services, Christopher Kelly
Direct Care Workforce: The Shift Towards Nonmedical Services, Christopher Kelly
Past Publications
Purpose:A shift in the direct care workforce from aides trained to provide medical services to those trained only to provide nonmedicalservices impacts both providers and consumers of long-term care. Between 2013 and 2014, data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the number of nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides (who providemedical services) has declined while the number of personal and home care aides (who provide nonmedical services) has increased. This study explores the potential reasons for these trends by comparing these two groups of aides, using data from the 2013 and 2014 American Community Survey (ACS).

Testing Immigrant Social Ties Explanations For Latino Health Paradoxes: The Case Of Social Support And Depression Symptoms, Edna A. Viruell-Fuentes, Flavia C. D. Andrade
Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)
We tested the immigrant social ties hypothesis for Latino health outcomes by examining whether positive social support from, and negative interactions with, spouses/partners, friends/relatives, and children accounted for the differences in depression symptoms between immigrant and U.S.-born Latinos. We analyzed data from the 2001– 2003 Chicago Community Adult Health Study. Immigrants and U.S.-born Latinos reported similar levels of positive support from spouses/partners and children, but the U.S.-born reported higher levels of positive support from friends/relatives. At the same time, U.S.-born Latinos reported higher levels of negative interactions with friends/relatives, spouses/partners, and children. For the full sample and the sample with …

Auditory And Visual Cues For Topic Maintenance With Persons Who Exhibit Dementia Of Alzheimer’S Type, Amy Wilson Teten, Paul A. Dagenais, Mary J. Friehe
Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
This study compared the effectiveness of auditory and visual redirections in facilitating topic coherence for persons with Dementia of Alzheimer’s Type (DAT). Five persons with moderate stage DAT engaged in conversation with the first author. Three topics related to activities of daily living, recreational activities, food, and grooming, were broached. Each topic was presented three times to each participant: once as a baseline condition, once with auditory redirection to topic, and once with visual redirection to topic. Transcripts of the interactions were scored for overall coherence. Condition was a significant factor in that the DAT participants exhibited better topic maintenance …

Human Movement Variability And Aging, Nicholas Stergiou, Jenny A. Kent, Denise Mcgrath
Journal Articles
An optimal level of variability enables us to interact adaptively and safely to a continuously changing environment, where often our movements must be adjusted in a matter of milliseconds. A large body of research exists that demonstrates natural variability in healthy gait (along with variability in other, healthy biological signals such as heart rate) and a loss of this variability in aging and injury, as well as in a variety of neurodegenerative and physiological disorders. We submit that this field of research is now in pressing need of an innovative “next step” that goes beyond the many descriptive studies that …

Temporal Structure Of Support Surface Translations Drive The Temporal Structure Of Postural Control During Standing, Troy J. Rand, Sara A. Myers, Anastasia Kyvelidou, Mukul Mukherjee
Journal Articles
A healthy biological system is characterized by a temporal structure that exhibits fractal properties and is highly complex. Unhealthy systems demonstrate lowered complexity and either greater or less predictability in the temporal structure of a time series. The purpose of this research was to determine if support surface translations with different temporal structures would affect the temporal structure of the center of pressure (COP) signal. Eight healthy young participants stood on a force platform that was translated in the anteroposterior direction for input conditions of varying complexity: white noise, pink noise, brown noise, and sine wave. Detrended fluctuation analysis was …

Biomechanical Analyses Of Stair-Climbing While Dual-Tasking, Srikant Vallabhajosula, Chi Wei Tan, Mukul Mukherjee, Austin Davidson, Nicholas Stergiou
Journal Articles
Stair-climbing while doing a concurrent task like talking or holding an object is a common activity of daily living which poses high risk for falls. While biomechanical analyses of overground walking during dual-tasking have been studied extensively, little is known on the biomechanics of stair-climbing while dual-tasking. We sought to determine the impact of performing a concurrent cognitive or motor task during stair-climbing. We hypothesized that a concurrent cognitive task will have a greater impact on stair climbing performance compared to a concurrent motor task and that this impact will be greater on a higher-level step. Ten healthy young adults …

Abstract
Stationary and moving surfaces impose different constraints on walking. In this study we investigated within-participants differences between walking on a ship before (at the dock) and during (at sea) a sea voyage. Four individuals participated in the study. While on the ship they wore a tri-axial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X+; ActiGraph LLC, Pensacola, FL) on their waists. Activity data were sampled at 30 Hz. Data were collected on the day before the voyage began and on several days at sea. The number of steps per day was greater at the dock than at sea. …

The Fact Book presents important campus information in data tables and charts. Included are details regarding students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Generally, data are broken out by college, rank, level, gender, age and ethnicity for both spring and fall semesters, past to present. There are a few academic year tables that include information on tuition & fees, student credit hours by program, and degrees conferred. We wish to thank the many individuals and departments at the University for their contributions to the Fact Book.
