Effects Of Adaptive-Tempo Music-Based Ras For Parkinson’S Disease Patients, Bart Moens, Leon Van Noorden, Wim De Wilde, Micheline Lesaffre, Dirk Cambier, Dobromir Dotov, Patrick Santens, Jana Blomme, Heleen Soens, Marc Leman

Journal Articles

The use of Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) is a potential method to help Parkinson Patients improve their gait characteristics. By providing auditory stimuli such as a metronome or music, gait impairments, which characterize the illness, tend to improve without pharmacological or surgical intervention. This work evaluates three different RAS approaches: fixed-tempo metronomes, fixed-tempo music and adaptive-tempo music. 29 Parkinson Disease (PD) patients were tested in a repeated measures experiment to compare spatiotemporal gait parameters in different cueing conditions. Baseline measures without RAS were taken, followed by counterbalanced trials of the three RAS methods. Compared to the baseline, beneficial effects were …

Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Walk With Altered Step Time And Step Width Variability As Compared With Healthy Control Subjects, Jennifer M. Yentes, Stephen I. Rennard, Kendra K. Schmid, Daniel Blanke, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Rationale: Compared with control subjects, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have an increased incidence of falls and demonstrate balance deficits and alterations in mediolateral trunk acceleration while walking. Measures of gait variability have been implicated as indicators of fall risk, fear of falling, and future falls.

Objectives: To investigate whether alterations in gait variability are found in patients with COPD as compared with healthy control subjects.

Methods: Twenty patients with COPD (16 males; mean age, 63.6 ± 9.7 yr; FEV1/FVC, 0.52 ± 0.12) and 20 control subjects (9 males; mean age, 62.5 ± 8.2 yr) walked for 3 …

Dual Tasking In A Virtual Reality Environment: Does Auditory Selective Attention Impact Gait?, Angeline L. Roth Mar 2017

Dual Tasking In A Virtual Reality Environment: Does Auditory Selective Attention Impact Gait?, Angeline L. Roth

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Falling is a common problem with increasing age; each year approximately 2.5 million older adults are treated in emergency departments due to falls. During walking, slower step time and a double stance position allow individuals to feel more balanced while performing more than one task, hopefully decreasing fall risk. These changes in gait may result from increased selective attention required from a cognitive task, thus increasing dual task demands. This project aimed to investigate dual task costs of an auditory selective attention task. Eleven healthy older adults (746 years) completed a series of different cognitive tasks such as dichotic listening …

Creating A Standard In At-Home Pulmonary Exercise Maintenance Programs, Casey Caniglia Mar 2017

Creating A Standard In At-Home Pulmonary Exercise Maintenance Programs, Casey Caniglia

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Between 12-24 million people in the United States suffer chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is linked to reduced physical activity and may be due to effects of the disease on the musculoskeletal system. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) clinics offer patients the chance for a better quality of life through exercise programs. However, PR typically lasts 36 sessions and is covered by Medicare. However, any maintenance past the 36 visits requires that costs to be covered by the patient. Cost and access to infrastructure are major barriers to continued supervised maintenance. Lack of confidence and motivation are barriers to at-home fitness …

Effects Of Gender On Empathy And Prosocial Behavior, Abi M. Heller Mar 2017

Effects Of Gender On Empathy And Prosocial Behavior, Abi M. Heller

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Empathy plays an important role in our aging society, especially when it comes to emotional well-being and relationships with others. There is some evidence that as adults age, they show a decrease in the cognitive domain of empathy (the ability to understand others’ thoughts and feelings) and an increase in the emotional domain of empathy (feelings of compassion and sympathy towards others). Previous studies have also revealed that women self-report higher emotional and cognitive empathy than men. Based on Daniel Batson’s empathy altruism hypothesis, more empathetic individuals are also more likely to engage in prosocial behaviors towards others. However, the …

Effects Of Serial Subtractions On Elderly Gait Speed In A Virtual Reality Setting, Taylor Leeder Mar 2017

Effects Of Serial Subtractions On Elderly Gait Speed In A Virtual Reality Setting, Taylor Leeder

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries in older adults aged 65+ with one in three adults falling each year. Cognitive processes are involved in gait, and thus, as cognitive changes are normative with age, this may impact fall risk in the elderly. Sixteen older adults aged 70.8±5.3 years took part in a dual-task (DT) study where they walked on a split-belt self-paced treadmill with and without a virtual reality (VR) setting while simultaneously performing a serial subtraction (SS) task. For SS, individuals were given a random 3-digit starting number and told to subtract by three from that number …

Phishing Suspiciousness In Older And Younger Adults: The Role Of Executive Functioning, Brandon E. Gavett, Rui Zhao, Samantha E. John, Cara A. Bussell, Jennifer R. Roberts, Chuan Yue

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

Phishing is the spoofing of Internet websites or emails aimed at tricking users into entering sensitive information, with such goals as financial or identity theft. The current study sought to determine whether age is associated with increased susceptibility to phishing and whether tests of executive functioning can predict phishing susceptibility. A total of 193 cognitively intact participants, 91 younger adults and 102 older adults, were primarily recruited through a Psychology department undergraduate subject pool and a gerontology research registry, respectively. The Executive Functions Module from the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery and the Iowa Gambling Task were the primary cognitive predictors of …

Mastoid Vibration Affects Dynamic Postural Control During Gait In Healthy Older Adults, Jung Hung Chien, Mukul Mukherjee, Jenny Kent, Nick Stergiou Jan 2017

Mastoid Vibration Affects Dynamic Postural Control During Gait In Healthy Older Adults, Jung Hung Chien, Mukul Mukherjee, Jenny Kent, Nick Stergiou

Journal Articles

Vestibular disorders are difficult to diagnose early due to the lack of a systematic assessment. Our previous work has developed a reliable experimental design and the result shows promising results that vestibular sensory input while walking could be affected through mastoid vibration (MV) and changes are in the direction of motion. In the present paper, we wanted to extend this work to older adults and investigate how manipulating sensory input through mastoid vibration (MV) could affect dynamic postural control during walking. Three levels of MV (none, unilateral, and bilateral) applied via vibrating elements placed on the mastoid processes were combined …

Effects Of Aging On The Relationship Between Cognitive Demand And Step Variability During Dual-Task Walking, Leslie M. Decker, Fabien Cignetti, Nathaniel Hunt, Jane F. Potter, Nicholas Stergiou, Stephanie A. Studenski Aug 2016

Studenski

Journal Articles

A U-shaped relationship between cognitive demand and gait control may exist in dual-task situations, reflecting opposing effects of external focus of attention and attentional resource competition. The purpose of the study was twofold: to examine whether gait control, as evaluated from step-to-step variability, is related to cognitive task difficulty in a U-shaped manner and to determine whether age modifies this relationship. Young and older adults walked on a treadmill without attentional requirement and while performing a dichotic listening task under three attention conditions: non-forced (NF), forced-right (FR), and forced-left (FL). The conditions increased in their attentional demand and requirement for …

Aging Affects Postural Tracking Of Complex Visual Motion Cues, Haralampos Sotirakis, Anastasia Kyvelidou, L. Mademli, Nicholas Stergiou, Vassilia Hatzitaki

Journal Articles

Postural tracking of visual motion cues improves perception–action coupling in aging, yet the nature of the visual cues to be tracked is critical for the efficacy of such a paradigm. We investigated how well healthy older (72.45 ± 4.72 years) and young (22.98 ± 2.9 years) adults can follow with their gaze and posture horizontally moving visual target cues of different degree of complexity. Participants tracked continuously for 120 s the motion of a visual target (dot) that oscillated in three different patterns: a simple periodic (simulated by a sine), a more complex (simulated by the Lorenz attractor that is …

Associations Between Mobility, Cognition And Callosal Integrity In People With Parkinsonism, Brett W. Fling, Marian L. Dale, Carolin Curtze, Katrijn Smulders, John G. Nutt, Fay B. Horak

Journal Articles

Falls in people with parkinsonism are likely related to both motor and cognitive impairments. In addition to idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD), some older adults have lower body parkinsonism (a frontal gait disorder), characterized by impaired lower extremity balance and gait as well as cognition, but without tremor or rigidity. Neuroimaging during virtual gait suggests that interhemispheric, prefrontal cortex communication may be involved in locomotion, but contributions of neuroanatomy connecting these regions to objective measures of gait in people with parkinsonism remains unknown. Our objectives were to compare the integrity of fiber tracts connecting prefrontal and sensorimotor cortical regions …
