Last summer I had the privilege of visiting a number of botanical gardens and parks in different parts of Europe. The American visitor abroad is constantly reminded of the abundance of parks and botanical gardens in not only the larger cities but even in the small cities and towns. Hyde Park, Regent's Park, St. James Park and Green Park, London; Kew Gardens; Thiergarten, Berlin; Prater Park, Vienna; Moscow; Kislovodsk; Vladikavkaz, Tiflis; Erivan; Batum; Odessa.

The induction theory of magnetism, introduced by Faraday, is now looked upon by all physicists as correct. The older theory which assumes the existence of magnetic fluids covering the ends of the magnet is in some cases mathematically simpler, and is for this reason often made use of. This, however, is apt to breed confusion as to the true nature of the induction or polarization in any given case. Edith Wharton’s Italian Villas and their Gardens (1904) followed her debut novel, The Valley of Decision (1902). Century magazine commissioned Wharton for a series of six articles on Italian architecture and an accompanying book-length collection. Wharton embarked out of Boston in January 1903, disembarked near Genoa, and proceeded to tour widely — Viterbo up to Orvieto; Siena, Florence, Rome, and Venice — following recommendations from Vernon Lee, the book’s dedicatee, who “better than anyone else, has understood and interpreted the garden-magic of Italy.” The book analyzes more than eighty wonders, intercut with fifty-two illustrations: wide-angle photographs and evocative color compositions …

Present Knowledge Of The Distribution Of Daimonelix, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Daimonelix when first discovered, in 1891, was thought to be confined to the elevated tablelands of central Sioux County, Nebraska. In the meantime its range has been extended and it is now known almost throughout the entire Arikaree formation, a tract probably about five hundred miles in diameter, situated in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado. The more fibrous forms of Daimonelix constitute a character so constant as to justify the name Fibrous Arikaree for the upper half of the formation.

Several years ago the writer undertook to determine and lable the bees contained in the collection of insects belonging to the University of Nebraska. After some preliminary work in the way of assorting and arranging the material at hand, and securing literature with which to do the naming, it was found that the large number of the species belonging to the genus Andrena in its broad sense could only be placed by the aid of some kind of synoptic key or table. This genus is founded on a nearly perfect skull and lower jaw in the American Museum collections (No. 2780), with associated skeletal material including five cervical vertebrae, tibia, fibula, calcaneum, astragalus, lunar, middle digit of manus, and ribs, found by the Expedition of 1897 near Hay Spring, Nebraska. IN spite of the phenomenal heat of the summer of 1901, which was of such intensity and duration that active work in the field was finally suspended, enough progress was made to justify the presentation of the matter to this society.
