The opening of Indian country has continued from Colonial days to the present. Usually it has resulted from force and treaty, the strong dispossessing the weak. As a result, the Red man has, in general, moved frontierward, ahead of industrial waves, remaining for a longer time only on reservations set aside for tribes. The Indian's struggle even on these reserves has been a losing one, resulting largely from war, disease, and the cupidity of whites. The Nebraska Geological Survey as now constituted has been in operation since 1891, but it has enjoyed state aid during the past four years only. Considering the size of the commonwealth and the limited appropriations for geological work, unusual progress has been made. Since no report covering the work of the first biennium was prepared it will be included incidentally in this paper. THE accompanying sketches represent the skull of a species of rhinoceros, Diceratherium arikarense, supposedly new, discovered by the geological expedition of 1905, sent from the University of Nebraska by the Hon. Charles H. Morrill to the Loup Fork beds at Agate, Nebraska, on the ranch of Mr. James Cook.

The genus Diceratherium was established by Marsh in 1875 on material from the Miocene beds near the John Day River in eastern Oregon, and two species, armatum and nanum, were recognized. A third species, advenum, was based on material from the Eocene (possibly Miocene) of Utah. Difference of horizon, …

ALTHOUGH for years past the state legislature of Nebraska has offered a bounty amounting to four thousand dollars for the discovery of a twenty-six-inch bed of workable coal, and five thousand for a thirty-six-inch bed, it is only within the past few days that any one has filed with the governor legitimate claims for the bounty. The bed of coal recently exposed, near Peru, Neb., extending some forty-two feet along the sides of a tunnel back from the banks of Honey Creek, seems to be fully thirty-four inches in thickness, as measured by the writer. The following investigation deals with the comparison of adverbs in English in the fourteenth century. This century seems especially important in the history of adverb comparison, since it represents the close of the dialectal period and the beginning of the transition period from Middle to Modern English. A chief purpose has been to connect the adverbial forms of the fourteenth century with those of the preceding and following centuries.

Examples are very full but not exhaustive. The majority of the important literary monuments of the century have been examined. The examples, however, are fuller for the Northern and Midland than …

This disease is also called "swamp fever" by farmers, and "pernicious anaemia" by veterinarians. In Nebraska many of the farmers call the disease "typhoid fever," for it resembles this fever very much. The manner in which the disease is contracted by horses is not definitely understood. In the last few years, the veterinarians in the Philippines have discovered a disease, prevalent in India under the name of "surra," the description of which corresponds very much to that of malarial fever of horses in this country, with the exception that bacteriologists have not been able to find the surra parasite in …

The season of 1905 marked a renewal of paleontological activity in the University of Nebraska, since it so happened that for the first time in several years funds became available again for the prosecution of such work.

By virtue of the liberal support and patronage of Hon. Charles H. Morrill, of Lincoln, annual geological expeditions, essentially paleontological in character, had been maintained in connection with the state university since 1892. It is generally assumed, either explicitly or by inference that Matthew Arnold's Schrab and Rustum (1853) is based on the story as told in the abridgment of the Sháhnáma of Firdawsí by the Rev. J. A. Atkinson (1832), which gives in an appendix a complete rendering of the Schrab and Rustum episode in heroic couplets ; or on Sir John Malcolm's History of Persia (1815); but no one has investigated the relative use made of the two, or the exact debt of the poet to either.
