Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT: John Deere D

TEST A: The manufacturer's representative operates the tractor for a minimum of 12 hours using light to heavy drawbar loads in each gear.

This serves as a period for limber up, general observation and adjustments. Adjustments that are permissible include valve tappet clearance, breaker ,point gap, spark plug gaps, clutch and others of a similar nature. No new parts or accessories can be installed without having mention made of it in the report. No data' are recorded during this preliminary run except the time that the engine is operated.

Sioux quartzite, granite, and schistose metamorphic rocks have been recognized in the pre-Cambrian. The present irregularities, the "basins and highs," on the pre- Cambrian surface are the result of erosion and a long structural history. In general succeedingly younger rocks rest unconformably by overlap against the pre-Cambrian "highs." The principal erosional and structural "highs" are: the "Nemaha mountains," the Cambridge anticline, the Chadron dome, and the Sioux Falls area. "Basins," or saddle-like depressions, occur on the pre-Cambrian surface between the "highs." The largest of these trends from southeast to northwest across the central part of Nebraska. Three severe drouths have occurred in Nebraska and adjacent states within the past eighty years, and less severe ones have come at moderately regular intervals. Their influence on the agricultural development of the state is well known, but their relation to water supply in general is not so well understood. This paper is a brief review of the relation of drouth to soil moisture, surace water, and groundwater supplies.

Since these parasites are located in the liver, kidney fat, kidney tissue proper, blood vessels, and other parts of the body outside the digestive system, they cannot be removed by any known medicinal treatment. The only hopeful outlook for the control of these parasites is a system of management designed to protect hogs from the infective larvae of the worms. IN a previous paper (Maddock, 1933) it was reported that when soil, soil and dung mixtures and dung were infected by adding fine emulsions of bovine tubercular material, virulent tubercle bacilli could be recovered after 178 days' exposure under field conditions. The experiments reported in the aforesaid paper were carried out in 1931, but it was felt that weight would be added to the results if the experiments could be repeated in a year of differing weather conditions.

The relative reactions to cold and wilt of self-fertilized lines of alfalfa through to the fifth generation are reported. Some of the reasons for undertaking a breeding program are given as well as methods used in the controlled cold and wilt determinations. Preliminary studies showed that reinoculating healthy individuals which had already resisted one wilt infection test served to eliminate additional plants, but the percentage healthy was much higher after the reinoculation than after the first inoculation. A study was made of the vitamin E content of each of the ingredients of our dairy herd ration, excepting the salt, lime, and bone meal. Female rats which were able to conceive but unable to reproduce when fed a diet deficient in vitamin E were fed the various feeds as a source of vitamin E during a second breeding period. The presence of vitamin E in a feed was thus shown by the ability of the female to cast a litter. 1. Turkey eggs which are incubated under chicken hens lose from 11 to 13 per cent of their original weight during the first 24 days of incubation. Small turkey eggs lose relatively more weight than large eggs incubated under the same conditions. 2. Considerable variation was observed in the weight loss during the first 24 days of incubation of eggs of approximately the same size when incubated in the same environment. The range was from 7 to 24 per cent of the original weight. Differences in shell texture may account for these variations, although care was taken to select only …

This study attempts to give the effects of war-time inflation and the subsequent deflation upon Nebraska agriculture. It presents statistical evidence of what happened. It is too late to prevent the present depression. Information concerning the situation may aid in promoting recovery. It is hoped that a knowledge of the inflation of 1916 to 1920 and the depression following may aid in avoiding the making of similar errors in the future.
