More than 2,000 years ago people were interested in determining the sex of the embryo in hatching eggs and the sex of day-old chicks. No method of determining the sex of day-old chicks (except of course in sex-linked chicks) was of the slightest value until the Japanese method was discovered and developed. About 1925 Japanese scientists discovered the presence of a rudimentary copulatory organ located on the ventral rim of the cloaca which was present in all day-old males and only a few day-old females.

The present shortage in the seed supply of all standard varieties of annual forage crops has created a special demand for information concerning their relative productivity and the possible use of substitute crops. This circular reports the yields secured from such crops at the Experiment Station, in an effort to help farmers reach a decision as to which crops should be grown this year for roughage, and which ones especially should have their seed supply increased for use in future years. Feed value and production costs as well as yields should be taken into consideration by the grower.

Although the root distribution of the chief grasses and forbs of tall-grass prairie has been known for 15 years (18), no studies on the relation of root distribution to the organic matter in the soil have been made. In fact, so far as the writers are aware, few studies of this type have been undertaken in America. SPRAGUE (15), working in New Jersey, has attempted to correlate root occupation of the several soil layers with their specific soil properties. Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Earlier this summer someone looking for oil rags at the Lester Larson Tractor Museum remembered there was a drawer of them in an old file cabinet. When unfolding one, and then many more, they discovered that the fabric pieces were actually hand-illustrated, fabric panels which had once been used in Extension presentations.

Much as speakers might use a PowerPoint presentation today, these are thought to have been hung at meeting sites and referenced during the course of the meeting/class.

Individuals from the Tractor Museum carefully photographed each of the panels and created a spreadsheet of information about them.

During the summer of 1929, the writer, accompanied by Mr. Paul O. McGrew of the University of Nebraska, discovered during the course of excavations for fossil vertebrates in northern Brown County, Nebraska, a fairly complete peccary skull referable to the genus Prosthennops. This skull, due to its several unusual characters, as well as to its fair degree of completeness, would seem to warrant a special and a rather detailed description. A field party from the Nebraska State Museum consisting of Messrs. E. L. Blue, Frank Crabill, Loren Eiseley, and C. Bertrand Schultz, on August 28, 1931, was fortunate in finding the remains of a new Mesocyon. This specimen, number 4-28-8-31, the Nebraska State Museum, was found in the Gering formation (lower Miocene), fifteen feet above the Brule, 400 feet west of the road in Redington Gap, near the center of the S. 1/2, sec. 14, T. 19 N., R. 52 W., west of Bridgeport, Morrill County, Nebraska.

In February, 1932, while opening a gravel pit to get material for highway construction, the skull, tusks, and mandible of a new longirostral mastodont were found by Robert Arnold on his ranch, Sec. 24, T. 12 S., R. 22 W., 1 1/2 miles due east of Ogallah, Trego County, western Kansas. This point is located about 20 miles west and three miles north of Hays, the seat of the Fort Hays Kansas State College, in the museum of which the above mentioned specimen is mounted and exhibited. Field bindweed, also known as small-flowered morning glory, European morning glory, Creeping Charlie, Russian Creeper, and Creeping Jennie, is becoming each year a greater menace to farm lands. The infestation of cultivated fields with this pest lowers the yield of crops an average of 30 percent, increases the labor costs, and reduces land and loan values. It is therefore important that land-owners learn to identify bindweed and guard against its introduction on their farms. Where it has become established, steps should be taken at once for its eradication.
