Development of the natural prairie vegetation is an excellent indicator of the intensity of drought. The extreme drought of 1934 left many bare areas in the grasslands and all but swept away most of the least drought-resistant species. The dry early spring and later summer of 1935 witnessed great increases in needlegrass, western wheat grass, and the invasion of a host of weeds. The favorable spring of 1936 promoted an abundant growth and emphasized the great changes in the prairie flora.

DURING the course of a field conference on the Pleistocene geology of western Nebraska, carved sediments were found in the headwater drainage of White River near Crawford, Nebraska. A reconnaissance of White River Valley revealed them to be present also in the mid-course, near Interior, South Dakota, and at the mouth, near Chamberlain, South Dakota, where the White River joins the Missouri (Fig. 1). These isolated occurrences of varves, over a distance of 240 miles, are so similar that a correlation seemed possible. Three groups totaling 123 chicks were fed accurately known amounts of rations containing 0.9, 1.5, and 2.3 per cent of calcium with liberal provision of the antirachitic factor so that conditions for assimilation and deposition were favorable. 2. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of ingested nitrogen was found to be about 37 per cent, and that of phosphorus about 28 per cent in the three lots. 3. A study was made of the effect of pregnancy and parturition upon the weight cycle of dairy cows of the Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, and Jersey breeds according to gestation periods from data accumulated from records for the period 1922 to 1934 of the dairy herd of the Dairy Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska. The weights of the cows were obtained from three consecutive weighings made at the middle of each month and daily weighings beginning at the 265th day of pregnancy and continuing for 30 days after calving. Cherry County (Nebraska) Extension: Historical Documents

After January 1, 1936 the extension program in Cherry County has been sponsored by the Cherry County Farm Bureau. The organization of the County Farm Bureau was completed January 31, 1936. Funds made available for their use total $1345.70.

Goals accomplished were well in line with program of work at the beginning of the year.

Seven hundred three applications for corn-hog contracts were filed. Final tabulations showed that five hundred seventy-seven complied in full, forty-four complied partially, and eighty-two were refused or rejected. Total benefit payments received into the county were $166,035.95. Administrated costs of the County Association totaled $8157.62. …
