Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

This study has been based upon the analysis of the Nebraska Classification Test in English (Form V) administered to 5,183 pupils graduated from 346 Nebraska high schools in 1934. Usable supplementary data have been supplied by 153 of these high schools, but in some portions of the study data for the remaining high schools have been available from other sources. The tests were examined as to content and reliability, and were compared with published tests used for purposes of placement by other collegiate institutions. With the object of obtaining a current insight into the relationship of crows to waterfowl on their breeding grounds, a study was inaugurated in the spring of 1934 and continued through the nesting season of that and the following year. Until recently the diseases of upland game birds received comparatively little specific study, except in a few outbreaks in which serious losses were observed. Though highly destructive, many of these outbreaks were of such short duration that the investigations undertaken were chiefly to learn the cause of death and usually were discontinued when losses were no longer noticeable. It has become increasingly evident, however, that every year great numbers of game birds die of disease, the decreases in their numbers frequently occurring in sections closed to hunting, even though food, cover, and other environmental conditions appear ideal. Gizzard-worms of poultry, Cheiloapirura hamulosa, are nematodes occurring in the gizzards of chickens and turkeys.

Summary and Conclusions

Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown. Recent investigations by the writer have shown that the flour beetle, Tenebroides nana, and the sand hopper, Orchestia platensis, collected from poultry farms in the Territory of Hawaii have been found naturally infested with the infective larvae of the poultry gizzard-worm, Cheilospirura hamulosa. The trematodes described in this paper are but two of over 100 species collected from marine fishes in 1934, during the third G. Allan Hancock Expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The author's presence on this expedition was sponsored in part by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. A brief preliminary report on the trematodes collected has been made (Manter, 1934) and a more complete report on the digenetic forms is in preparation. In 1924, Gochenour published the results of certain experiments which tended to show that what he regarded as a specific aggressin possessed an immunizing value against hemorrhagic septicemia. The aggressin he prepared, by the use of a highly virulent strain of Bacillus bipolaris, was described as having adequately protected seven bovine yearlings against inoculations with the same organism which, when injected into four yearlings, used as virus controls, proved fatal to them. Dry beans of the Great Northern and pea-bean type from Nebraska and several other bean-producing states were studied to determine the factors affecting the cooking quality. A standard cooking procedure with distilled water was used to disclose differences in cooking quality, and the percentage of beans too hard for table use was determined for each cooked portion. The factors studied were: soaking, including time and temperatures; storage, including time and storage conditions; age; size; place of origin; effect of chemical solutions; and the composition of the seed coat. In a previous paper (Maddock, 1934), it has been shown that healthy calves may be infected with bovine tubercle bacilli when grazed upon pasture infected at intervals with emulsions of the virulent organisms. These infections were designedly heavy, and it was felt that this orientating experiment should be followed by one in which pasture infection was secured in a way more closely approximating to the natural.
Three calves surviving from the previous experiment had reacted strongly to the double intradermal tuberculin test. Microscopic examination of the dung of these animals failed to show the presence of acid-fast bacilli, but to …
