Young Delicious apple trees were grown in two soil types, clay loam and loess, in eastern Nebraska, under a variety of cultural conditions. The development of roots and tops was studied for the first three years after transplanting in the orchards. In all, 73 trees were excavated.
The first two years were about normal in precipitation at Lincoln (locale of the clay loam) while at Union (locale of the loess) there was a deficit of over 9 inches each year. The third year, 1934, was one of severe drought and heat at both stations. The total rainfall deficiency for the …

I. The utilization of nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus was studied with two lots of growing chicks by means of growth and body-analysis experiments. One lot had calcium added to the ration in the form of sulfate and the second received calcium carbonate, the additions being made on an equivalent calcium basis so that the experimental variable was the source of the calcium. 2. The percentage rate of gain and the gain per gram of nitrogen fed were identical in the two lots. 3. Scab, caused by Actinomyces scabies (Thaxt.) Giiss., is a potato disease of major importance in western Nebraska. Seed treatments are effective in controlling seed-borne scab, but it has been shown that even when healthy or treated seed potatoes are used the disease may be very severe because of infection from the soil. Crop rotation will reduce the incidence of the disease, but the fact that potato scab may cause serious loss in soils never before planted to potatoes indicates that there are numerous factors other than the time interval between potato crops which affect the occurrence of the disease. Summary

The Friedel-Crafts reaction has been used in the preparation of thiophene ketones, some of which were hitherto unknown. Certain limitations of the reaction have been noted.

The mercuration of thiophene ketones has been systematically investigated for the first time. Many new halogen derivatives of benzothienone have been synthesized. These were employed in the elucidation of the structure of a complex mercurial· derived from this ketone.

A new modification of an old reaction has been developed whereby benzothienone can be mercurated quickly and almost quantitatively. Interesting derivatives of this little known ketone have been synthesized. Chief among these are the …

The size of a dairy cow is important from the standpoint of feed consumption and economy of production and also as an indication of the expected size of offspring. The ultimate disposal of dairy cattle is for beef, and the measure of returns is based upon size and condition. A method for the determination of the approximate weights of dairy females, where scales are not available, is needed. Measurements of dairy cattle which show development and skeletal growth by ages in relationship to weight are presented here for four different dairy breeds.

On November 2, 1936 Mr. Russell Graham Attorney at Law, contacted the Los Angeles division of the Bureau and alleged that on September 1, 1936, Groucho and Chico Marx, radio and motion picture entertainers, presented a radio sketch on the Reynolds broadcast at the Hollywood Music Box Theater. The sketch was substantially the same as the radio serial comedy called, "The Hollywood Adventures of Mr. Dibble," on April 10, 1934.
