Bear River: A National Wildlife Refuge, Vanez T. Wilson, Rachel Carson Jun 1950

Bear River: A National Wildlife Refuge, Vanez T. Wilson, Rachel Carson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In the autumn of 1824 a buffalo-hide canoe drifted down the Bear River to its mouth in the Great Salt Lake of Utah. Within sight of that vast inland sea, Jim Bridger must have paused in amazement. Everywhere he looked-in the sky, on the open water, over the marshy borders of the lake-there were birds. It is said that the famous explorer of the western wilderness brought back reports that he had that day seen "millions of ducks and geese."

The Bear River marshes were soon to know years when their waterfowl were numbered, not by millions, but by thousands; …

A New Species Of The Acanthocephalan Genus Arhythmorhynchus From Sandpipers Of Alaska, Harley J. Van Cleave, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In the spring of 1949, a survey of the parasites of birds of Alaska, especially in the vicinity of Juneau, was conducted by Robert L. Rausch and Ralph B. Williams. Among the Acanthocephala encountered there were specimens of the genus Arhythmorhynchus in two species of sandpipers, Erolia ptilocnemis couesi (Ridgway) (the Aleutian sandpiper) and Erolia alpina pacifica (Vieillot) (the red-backed sandpiper). This parasite was present in such numbers as to make morphological and taxonomic study profitable. The species is clearly distinct from all other members of the genus and is here described as Arhythmorhynchus comptus n. sp.

Appraisal Of Certain Economic And Fiscal Aspects Of The Pittman~Robertson Land Purchase Program In Southern Michigan, Raleigh Barlowe May 1950

Appraisal Of Certain Economic And Fiscal Aspects Of The Pittman~Robertson Land Purchase Program In Southern Michigan, Raleigh Barlowe

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

BETWEEN 1939 and 1950 the Michigan Department of Conservation spent approximately one million dollars in acquiring wildlife restoration and public hunting grounds in 20 southern Michigan counties. Altogether, 80,356 acres, located in 25 separate projects, were acquired for these purposes.1 Additional lands also were acquired for the 15 public recreational areas located in the southern part of the state.

Of the lands in the state game areas on January 1, 1950, almost 52,000 acres were acquired under the terms of the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937 (50 Stat. 917). This law, commonly referred to as the Pittman-Robertson …

Notes On Microtine Rodents From The Brooks Range, Arctic Alaska, Robert L. Rausch, David H. Johnson Apr 1950

Notes On Microtine Rodents From The Brooks Range, Arctic Alaska, Robert L. Rausch, David H. Johnson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In connection with parasitological studies carried on during 1949 for the U.S. Public Health Service, the writer collected a considerable number of mammals from the northern edge of the "Endicott" section of the Brooks Range, in Arctic Alaska. The mammalian fauna of this region is poorly known, since apparently no previous collecting has been done here. About 200 microtine rodents were collected, mostly near Tolugak Lake (latitude 68° 24' N, longitude 151° 26' W), near the head of the Anaktuvuk River Valley. A few specimens were also taken at Umiat, on the Colville River, about 80 miles north of Tolugak …

It's Time To Take Stock Apr 1950

It's Time To Take Stock

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Likening colleges and universities to the automobile industry may seem far-fetched, but is it? Each is engaged in fashioning and selling necessary products- one trained men, the other mechanical equipment. Both entered the post-war years with production at low ebb; unable to satisfy pent-up customer demands. Time and high-speed assembly lines have bridged the gap of gas buggy shortage. The impact of selective buying by a discriminating public is now real cause for concern among some of the motor moguls. Rumor has had it that schools teaching wildlife management are overproducing. We decided to gather facts and opinions at the …

Effects Of Different Intensities Of Grazing On Depth And Quantity Of Roots Of Grasses, J. E. Weaver Apr 1950

Effects Of Different Intensities Of Grazing On Depth And Quantity Of Roots Of Grasses, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The writer has been interested in prairies, pastures, and root depth and distribution over a period of many years. He had the privilege of examining these relationships in the Palouse prairie of Washington long ago while numerous representative areas still remained in a virgin condition (5, 6). Extensive studies have been made in the hardlands of Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska many years before, during, and following the great drought of 1933-40 (7, 8, 1, 11). Vegetation and root habits have been studied in sand hills (7, 8, 4), in bluffs of wind-blown loess (12), and wet soils of lowland. The …

Observations On Histopathological Changes Associated With Starvation In Wisconsin Deer, Robert L. Rausch Apr 1950

Observations On Histopathological Changes Associated With Starvation In Wisconsin Deer, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Heavy winter losses in deer, apparently resulting directly from an inadequate food supply, have long been known in the United States. The general situation has been well reviewed by Leopold (1943) and by Leopold, Sowls, and Spencer (1947). There is a conservable volume of literature available concerning deer starvation from the management standpoint. The ill-advised attempts at the total destruction or, at best, the severe reduction of natural predator on deer have resulted in the removal of this important population control.

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla Mar 1950

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.

Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

Monolith Method Of Root-Sampling In Studies On Succession And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, John Voigt Mar 1950

Monolith Method Of Root-Sampling In Studies On Succession And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, John Voigt

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A new method has been devised by which a complete sample of an entire root system may be taken from soil surface to maximum depth of penetration. The roots are separated from the soil without injury to them or displacement of individual roots from their natural position. They are examined in the laboratory in relation to the various horizons of the soil profile. Monoliths 12 inches wide, 3 inches thick, and 3-5 feet in depth are taken from the walls of trenches made in selected pure stands of each species. Roots are obtained from the monolith by a system of …

Public Health Reports, Clarence M. Tarzwell Feb 1950

Public Health Reports, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Preliminary tests with DDT for the control of mosquitoes, forest insects, and agricultural pests demonstrated that it was toxic to a wide variety of animal life. Because there were indications that the new insecticide would be widely used, apprehension was expressed by some groups that its extensive or indiscriminate use would cause extensive harm to wildlife.

The desirability of carefully controlled use was early recognized by those in charge of extensive programs for the control of insects of public health importance. A joint statement of policy for the use of DDT issued early in 1945 (1) by the Army and …
