Report On Historical Investigation Of Wounded Knee Battlefield Site, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota, Merrill J. Mattes

United States National Park Service: Publications

In April 1952, the National Park Service was requested by Representative E. Y. Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch Oct 1952

Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

It is the purpose of this paper to review the status of hydatid disease (caused by Echinococcus spp.) in the boreal regions of the world. Its importance has long been recognized in Eurasian countries, but only during recent years have investigators added anything significant to the knowledge of hydatid disease in North America. There is need to disseminate up-to-date information among medical workers in Canada and Alaska, where the disease is endemic in northern regions having a large aboriginal population. Therefore, particular emphasis will be placed on the situation in boreal North America.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xi. Helminth Parasites Of Microtine Rodents--Taxonomic Considerations, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A survey of the helminth parasites of Alaskan rodents has been carried on by the writer since the winter of 1948-1949, as a continuation of an investigation begun in the central United States in 1942. Results of this work indicate that, despite the size of the Territory of Alaska, the survey is complete enough to furnish a reasonable knowledge of the species of helminths parasitic in microtine rodents in Alaska. Information derived from previous investigations serves as a standard against which the completeness of the present work may be judged. In the writer's opinion, the continuation of this work on …

Internal Fissuring Of Wheat Due To Weathering, Max Milner, J. A. Shellenberger, M. R. Lee, Robert Katz Sep 1952

Internal Fissuring Of Wheat Due To Weathering, Max Milner, J. A. Shellenberger, M. R. Lee, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiographic technique developed at this Station for the determination of internal or hidden insect infestation in stored grain has proved to be useful for the detection of other physical anomalies in grains. Practical applications of this sort include the detection of cracked or broken kernels in rough rice (paddy) prior to milling as well as the extent of internal fracturing of certain grains such as maize due to uneven stresses arising from severe drying conditions. This communication deals with a condition of internal fissuring occurring in wheat due to weathering of the ripened grain in the field.

Effects Of Excessive Natural Mulch On Development, Yield, And Structure Of Native Grassland, J. E. Weaver, N. W. Rowland Sep 1952

Effects Of Excessive Natural Mulch On Development, Yield, And Structure Of Native Grassland, J. E. Weaver, N. W. Rowland

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Prairie vegetation is so universally mowed, grazed, or burned that little information has been recorded on its behavior under complete protection. Climax grassland, when grazed lightly or even moderately, may retain essentially its natural composition over extremely long periods (16, 18). But aside from observation there is little information upon the unusual and rare phenomenon of complete protection of grassland from disturbance over a considerable period of time.

An Example Of The Influence Of Modifying Genes In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel K. Mitchell Aug 1952

An Example Of The Influence Of Modifying Genes In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel K. Mitchell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The influence of genetic modifiers, those genes which affect the expression of other genes, has been demonstrated in a wide variety of organisms. In Neurospora crassa the influence of modifiers is suggested by quantitative differences in growth substance utilization among different reisolates of a mutant strain (Good, Heilbronner, and Mitchell, 1950), and genetic suppression (Houlahan and Mitchell, 1947) may be regarded as an extreme type of modification. In addition, Houlahan and Mitchell (1948) and Mitchell and Mitchell (1952) have demonstrated extensive interactions among genes causing pyrimidine, lysine, and arginine requirements, and Srb (private communication) has found a case in which …

Inheritance Of Sterility, Flower Color, Spinelessness, Attached Pappus And Rust Resistance In Safflower, Carthamus Tinctorius, Carl E. Claassen Jul 1952

Inheritance Of Sterility, Flower Color, Spinelessness, Attached Pappus And Rust Resistance In Safflower, Carthamus Tinctorius, Carl E. Claassen

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Since literature pertaining to breeding and inheritance in safflower was found to be very limited, fundamental research was instituted to determine: (A) a method for making controlled crosses, (B) the amount of natural crossing that occurs, (C) the association of oil content of seed with other seed and plant characteristics, and (D) the mode of inheritance of sterility, flower color, spinelessness, attached pappus and rust resistance. Results on natural and controlled crossing in safflower and the association of oil content in seed with other plant and seed characteristics have been reported. It is the purpose of this bulletin to report …

John Wesley Powell: Frontiersman Of Science, Paul Meadows Jul 1952

John Wesley Powell: Frontiersman Of Science, Paul Meadows

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

I should explain that this book is more or less an accident. It started with a suggestion by my friend and former colleague, the late Joseph Kinsey Howard, that the Major was worth knowing. A Montana newspaperman and writer, Howard had been impressed by the amazing far-sightedness of Powell's report, published in 1878, on the arid lands of the West. At the time I was preparing a report of my own for a Rockefeller Foundation research project in the humanities. Upon reading the Major's study of the arid lands, it occurred to me that it would be profitable to review …

Hydrogen Bond Energies In Carboxylic Acids, M.M. Jones, W.R. Gilkerson, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

A question of interest to the study of the chemisorption of carbon monoxide on iron is whether the carbon is desorbed with the same oxygen to which it was bonded prior to the adsorption. A mixture of C13O and CO18 in the desorbed gas in amounts greater than expected from normal abundance ratios shows that an intermolecular oxygen exchange occurs.
