Assay Of Cis And Trans-O-Hydroxycinnamic Acids In Sweetclover Extracts, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz Jan 1961

Assay Of Cis And Trans-O-Hydroxycinnamic Acids In Sweetclover Extracts, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Various investigations related to the biosynthesis of o-hydroxycinnamic acid in sweetclover require that simple, rapid methods of assay be available for both the cis isomer (coumarinic acid) and the trans isomer (o-coumaric acid). This report deals with two such methods, both of which represent refinements of a technique for the fluorometric assay of coumarin described in an earlier publication from t h i s laboratory a ask ins and Gorz, 1957). In one procedure, designatled method I, o-coumaric acid and total o-hydroxycinnamic acid are determined, and coumarinic acid is estimated by difference; while in the other procedure, method 11, coumarinic …

Pensternon In Your Garden, Glenn Viehmeyer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A new race of hardy perennials is beginning to appear in American gardens. These are the penstemons, a genus of plants closely related to the familiar snapdragon, which may become important ornamentals as they become better known to gardeners. The purpose of this bulletin is to show the possibility of the genus as an ornamental and to suggest species and species hybrids of possible value to Great Plains gardeners; to provide information about propagation and culture; and to encourage gardeners to engage in penstemon breeding as an avocation.

Evolutionary Relationships Among The North American Mallards, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1961

Evolutionary Relationships Among The North American Mallards, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

A comparative morphological, behavioral, and electrophoretic study was undertaken on six populations of North American mallards that are currently considered by the A.O.U. Check-list to comprise four species and two additional subspecies. These include Anas p. platyrhynchos, A. d. diaxi, A. d. novimexicana, A. f. fulvigula, A. f. maculosa, and A. rubripes. These forms are essentially allopatric in their breeding distributions, with the major exception of A. p. platyrhynchos and A. rubripes, which overlap throughout a several-hundred-mile zone in east-central United States.

Geographic ranges and population sizes are estimated, and evidence is presented to indicate that the …

Notes On The Collared Pika, Ochotona Collaris (Nelson), In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Maps showing the geographic range of the collared pika, Ochotona collaris (Nelson), have been published recently by Hall (1951) and by Hall and Kelson (1959). According to these, this mammal occurs in the mountains between the Tanana and Yukon Rivers, and in the Alaska Range as far west as Mt. McKinley. A specimen from the summit of the Chugach Mountains (Baker, 1951) was not included on the aforementioned maps. Osgood (1904) referred to two specimens collected by C. L. McKay in the Chogmit Mountains, east of Lake Clark at the base of the Alaska Peninsula, and also mentioned a sight …

Mortality Of Eastern Brook Trout Caused By Plerocercoids (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea: Diphyllobothriidae) In The Heart And Viscera, Glenn L. Hoffman, C. E. Dunbar Jan 1961

Mortality Of Eastern Brook Trout Caused By Plerocercoids (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea: Diphyllobothriidae) In The Heart And Viscera, Glenn L. Hoffman, C. E. Dunbar

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

It is well known that migrating helminth larvae do a great amount of damage to the host. Often, however, the host is relatively large and the damage done by few larvae is not serious. When the host is very small the mechanical damage, at least, must be proportionately greater for each larva present. An unusual case of mortality of small brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) roughly 2 to 4 inches long was brought to our attention. Examination of the mortalities, as well as survivors, revealed relatively large diphyllobothrid larvae (fig. 1) in the chambers of the heart, liver, pericardial …

Notes On Sanguinicola Davisi (Trematoda: Sanguinicolidae) In The Gills Of Trout, H. S. Davis, Glenn L. Hoffman, E. W. Surber

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In 1953 the late Dr. Davis recorded the presence of an unnamed trematode from the gill blood vessels of fingerling cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) and fingerling steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Alsea Hatchery and in yearling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Oakridge Hatchery, both of the Oregon State Game Commission. Subsequently, two blood flukes, Sanguinicola davisi and S. klamathensis, were described from trout by Wales (1958). The present species was determined to be S. davisi by one of us (GLH). This report supplements data reported by Davis (1953) and Wales (1958). …

Responsibility Of Teacher Educators To Youth Entering Non-Farm Agricultural Occupations, James T. Horner

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

(1) Employers in farm related occupations are not assuming the responsibility of educating their employees, (2) the proportion of workers able to secure unskilled employment is decreasing, (3) the numbers of skilled, technical, clerical, managerial and sales jobs are increasing, {4) many rural youth will inevitably enter non-farming agricultural jobs and (5) although their farm backgrounds and experiences are valuable, they will require considerable education to qualify for and advance in satisfactory employment.

Whether it be supplementing of high school courses, area schools at the post-high school level, community colleges, on-the-job cooperative training, or some other method, it is apparent …

Activities Of Acid Phosphatase, Peroxidase, And Polyphenolase In Etiolated Shoots From Control And Irradiated Maize Seeds, Francis A. Haskins, S. C. Downs Jan 1961

Activities Of Acid Phosphatase, Peroxidase, And Polyphenolase In Etiolated Shoots From Control And Irradiated Maize Seeds, Francis A. Haskins, S. C. Downs

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Evidence is presented that enzymatic differences exist between etiolated shoots from appropriately irradiated maize seeds and shoots from control seeds. Differences in specific activities of acid phosphatase and peroxidase became apparent only when individual portions (first internode, coleoptile, and unexpanded foliage leaves) of the shoot were considered. Contributions of the three shoot portions to total activities of acid phosphatase, peroxidase, and polyphenolase also were studied, and irradiation-induced differences in the patterns of contribution were noted.

Definition Of "Employee" Within The Nebraska Workmen's Compensation Act, Ben Novicoff Jan 1961

Definition Of "Employee" Within The Nebraska Workmen's Compensation Act, Ben Novicoff

Nebraska Law Review

Any attempt to explain what is meant by the word "employee" must be prefaced by a statement that there is a difference between the workmen's compensation definition and the common-law definition. The definition for workmen's compensation purposes is generally broader in keeping with the philosophy of compensating workmen for injuries arising out of and in the course of his employment regardless of fault. Exactly how broadly the word "employee" should be construed within the Nebraska Workmen's Compensation Act has created much litigation. The intent of this article is to synthesize the problems that have arisen in construing the Nebraska act. …

Many more workers would have undetected and unknown physical infirmities. This article examines the extent to which these workers may be entitled to compensation under the Nebraska Workmen's Compensation Law for work-connected aggravation of their pre-existing infirmities by exertion or …

Nebraska Usury Statues, The Time Price Sale Transaction, And The Installment Sales Act: An Analysis Of Nebraska Finance Law, Levi H. Goossen

Nebraska Law Review

Ever since territorial days an ever-growing body of statutes relating to the law of usury has been accumulating in Nebraska until today there is found an example of each of the several kinds of usury statutes commonly found in other states. Litigation under the various acts has been plentiful, especially in the area of the distinction between the time price sale and the loan. As a result, the varied rules and interpretations developed both legislatively and judicially have, over the years, become somewhat confusing and conflicting. The purpose of this article is to discuss the various statutes and their coverage …

The Nebraska Uniform Gifts To Minors Act, Charles J. Kimball Jan 1961

The Nebraska Uniform Gifts To Minors Act, Charles J. Kimball

Nebraska Law Review

For years attorneys have been plagued by obstacles when their clients make gifts to minors. The purpose of this study is to point out some of these difficulties and to discuss the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act, which has been adopted in many jurisdictions, including Nebraska. Major difficulties are the inability of the minor to deal freely with property, and the widespread and justifiable hesitation to deal with infants. This problem becomes especially acute when a donor wishes to transfer securities because it is generally imperative for effective management that stock certificates be easily transferable. The objects of the act …

Witnesses—Imprisonment Of The Material Witness For Failure To Give Bond, Ronald L. Sluyter Jan 1961

Witnesses—Imprisonment Of The Material Witness For Failure To Give Bond, Ronald L. Sluyter

Nebraska Law Review

A defendant charged with highway robbery was released on bail in the usual manner pending trial. At the trial, six months later, it appeared that the complaining witness had throughout this period been incarcerated for his inability to post bond. A second case involved a seven-dollar robbery. The victim, who reported the robbery, was rewarded for his trouble by imprisonment for a considerable time because he lacked the money to procure a bond. Such cases, unfortunately, while perhaps not usual, can hardly be regarded as atypical. The purpose of this article is to consider selected major problems in the law …

Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement Of Support Act: Granting An Obliger Section Six Jurisdiction In A Responding State On An Ex Parte Basis, Joseph L. Krause

Nebraska Law Review

The purpose of this article is to examine a conflict in judicial interpretations of the extradition provisions of the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act of 1952 and to suggest an appropriate solution. The question raised is whether an obligor-defendant charged with the crime of desertion or nonsupport in a demanding state can defeat extradition by submitting to the jurisdiction of a court in a responding state and complying with that court's support order. Section 5 of the Support Act, expanding upon the Uniform Extradition Act, provides for extradition of any person charged with desertion or nonsupport in the demanding …

Automobiles—Family Purpose Doctrine—Nebraska Rejects Extension To Third Person Driving With Permission Of Accompanying Family Member, Don H. Sherwood

Nebraska Law Review

In an action to recover damages sustained in an automobile accident, judgment was entered on a verdict for plaintiff against the owner of a family-purpose car and another defendant who had been driving at the time of the accident with the permission of the owner's minor son. On appeal, held: Judgment against the owner reversed and remanded with directions to dismiss. The Supreme Court of Nebraska, committed to the family purpose doctrine at least since 1922, has applied the doctrine consistently in a well-developed line of cases. In the instant case, however, the court has clearly limited extension of the …

Genetic Studies Of Winter Hardiness In Barley, C. R. Rohde, C. F. Pulham Dec 1960

Genetic Studies Of Winter Hardiness In Barley, C. R. Rohde, C. F. Pulham

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

An important obstacle toward the development of winter barley varieties with a higher level of winter hardiness has been the deficiency of genetic information on this character. The primary objective of these studies was to obtain information on the genetics of the winter hardiness of a group of 18 winter barley varieties which originated from widely different geographic areas of the world. It was hoped that this information might be helpful in determining whether or not it would be possible for barley breeders to combine different genetic sources of winter hardiness and attain a higher level of hardiness than presently …
