Swine Brucellosis: How You Can Eradicate It Jan 1961

Swine Brucellosis: How You Can Eradicate It

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Swine brucellosis is a bacterial disease that affects swine, other domestic animals, and humans. Severe exposure causes the disease in cattle, dogs, cats, and poultry. The disease can spread from one species of animal to another, and from animals to humans. However, it does not normally spread from one human to another, or from humans to animals. The disease costs the swine industry about $10 million a year. Losses due to human infection cannot be estimated. Although human brucellosis, or undulant fever, is difficult to diagnose-especially in mild cases-a total of 892 cases were documented in the United States in …

Res Judicata—Personal Injury And Vehicle Property Damage Arising From A Single Accident, John Ilich Jr. Jan 1961

Res Judicata—Personal Injury And Vehicle Property Damage Arising From A Single Accident, John Ilich Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

The following situation illustrates a common occurrence in Nebraska: X suffers personal injuries and his car is damaged as a result of an automobile accident. The first question is whether X has one, or more than one, cause of action. If the cause of action is single, then a judgment on the property damage claim is a bar to a later action for the personal injury and vice versa. This is so because the rule against splitting a single cause of action makes the judgment in the first proceedings res judicata in the second. A second question arises if the …

Injunction To Prevent Divulgence Of Evidence Obtained By Wiretaps In State Criminal Prosecutions, Allen L. Graves

Nebraska Law Review

Officers of the State of New York, in compliance with the Constitution and statutes of that state, but in direct violation of a federal statute, tapped a telephone belonging to a person suspected of certain felonies, intending to use the evidence obtained thereby against the suspect in a prospective state criminal prosecution. After having been indicted by a State Grand Jury, the accused began an action in Federal District Court for an injunction to enjoin a State District Attorney, a municipal Police Commissioner, and others from divulging the existence or contents of the conversations overheard, as well as the introduction …

Labor Law—Federal Court Injunction Against Breach Of No-Strike Clause, G. Bradford Cook Jan 1961

Labor Law—Federal Court Injunction Against Breach Of No-Strike Clause, G. Bradford Cook

Nebraska Law Review

A union picketed interstate motor carriers to induce non-union clerical employees to join the union, and caused a shutdown of employers' terminals. The employers sought an injunction to specifically enforce the no-strike clause of the collective bargaining agreement in a federal court under Section 301(a) of the Labor Management Relations Act. The main issue of the principal case was whether Section 301(a) repealed by implication the Norris-LaGuardia Act's specific prohibitions against the issuance of an injunction in a labor dispute. Both the Norris-LaGuardia Act and the National Labor Relations Act have as their general objectives the settling of disputes within …

Nebraska Constitutional Revision: A Symposium Jan 1961

Nebraska Constitutional Revision: A Symposium

Nebraska Law Review

Nebraska Governor Val Peterson told a Lincoln audience that unless the government of the State of Nebraska is streamlined, the state may soon become nothing but an administrative division of the national government. There is a need for a constitutional convention, he said, to provide the state with a basic law which is both compact and uncluttered by legislation. It is now appropriate, forty-one years after the last state constitutional convention, to take a close look at the Nebraska Constitution. This symposium issue features lawyers and professors of government discussing the basic laws of state government, which ordain and establish …

Nebraska Law Review

The Nebraska Law Review has seldom confined an entire issue to analyzing only one area of the law. Occasionally, however, the Review deems it desirable to cast aside this policy. The Nebraska Workmen's Compensation Law was enacted in 1913 and has undergone little change since its inception. The amount of litigation interpreting the act has been extensive, and numerous problems are still left unanswered. As Nebraska has become more industrialized, attorneys have found that a substantial amount of their time is devoted to compensation problems. For this reason, and because of recent trends elsewhere, the Review is devoting the first …

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla, F. A. Haskins Jan 1961

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla, F. A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Good stable soil structure is valuable for promoting the growth of plants and micro-organisms by permitting enhanced aeration and water penetration and by decreasing erosion under some conditions.

Micro-organisms influence water percolation through the soil. They may plug up soil pores with byproducts of growth and reduce water percolation. On the other hand, if a soil containing a large amount of microbial products is stirred and allowed to dry, then the percolation may be high.

Micro-organisms are involved in stabilizing soil structure by their products of decomposition and their cellular binding material, such as mycelia. Microorganisms differ greatly in …
