Improvement Of Beef Cattle Through Breeding Methods. Summary Of Results From Regional Project Nc-1, Keith E. Gregory
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The major purpose of this project is to obtain information that beef cattle breeders can use to make maximum genetic improvement in all traits of economic value in beef cattle. The major objectives of NC-1 are the following: (1) to determine the traits of economic importance in beef cattle: (2) to assess their relative value; (3) to develop reliable methods and procedures for measuring and evaluating them; (4) to obtain estimates of their heritabilities; (5) to obtain estimates of the genetic and phenotypic correlations among all economically important traits; (6) to evaluate the effects and uses of inbreeding and heterosis; …
The Merchant's Lombard Knight, Paul A. Olson
The Merchant's Lombard Knight, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The problem of Chaucer's reason for having his Merchant tell a tale about an Italian from Pavia is little closer to solution now than it was when Skeat expressed bafflement before it. The Merchant seems to bear a positive hatred for his character; he projects all the marital evils which he knows on him and makes him suffer stupidly and innocently. A proper explanation of the Merchant's motives must not only account for his interest in Italy but for his animus toward Italians or, at least, toward Lombards from Pavia. When the Merchant begins his prologue, the Clerk has just …

What Older Nebraska Women Eat, P. C. Fry
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
There are many Nebraskans who have reached the status of senior citizens. These Nebraskans in their 60's, 70's and 80's have attained a special place in our society. We can learn much from studying how they have eaten through the years and comparing their diets with what we have learned from similar studies in other states.
Progress From Recurrent Selection Procedures For The Improvement Of Corn Populations, John H. Lonnquist
Progress From Recurrent Selection Procedures For The Improvement Of Corn Populations, John H. Lonnquist
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The possibilities of developing synthetic varieties suitable for the fringe areas of the corn belt, where cost of hybrid seed is high relative to the value of the expected crop, and in areas where hybrid corn might not be a feasible approach for other reasons, made it seem a worthwhile objective for study. Effort has been made in recent years to increase the productivity of hybrid combinations through selection of new superior lines using standard breeding procedures. The limited progress realized has resulted in an increased interest in the possible use of alternate methods for the development of superior germplasm …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
This Field Conference is scheduled for five days, July 31-August 3 (main excursion) and August 4 (post-conference excursion), 1961. Its purpose is to consider recent work and problems in stratigraphy and vertebrate paleontology concerned with deposits ranging in age from Oligocene through Pleistocene, in western Nebraska. The Guide Book is the Ninth issued by sponsoring institutions for the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (the others having been published in 1941, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1951, 1'953, 1956, and 1958). It thus commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the First Field Conference of the Society, as well as the 90th Anniversary of the establishment …
The Sexual Behavior And Systematic Position Of The Hooded Merganser, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Sexual Behavior And Systematic Position Of The Hooded Merganser, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
It has been over 15 years since Delacour and Mayr (1945) first urged that the mergansers (Mergus)and the goldeneye-Bufflehead group (Bucephala) be merged into a single tribe (Mergini) rather than being maintained in separate subfamilies (Aythyinae and Merginae). Their reasons for this change were several, and included such points as the similarities in the downy young, female color patterns, occurrence of wild hybrids between the two genera, and tracheal structure. Indeed, except for the shape of the bill in these two groups there is no good means of distinguishing the two subfamilies. As Delacour and Mayr pointed out, bill shape …

"Chronometricals And Horologicals”: The Key To A Basic Theme In The Fiction Of Herman Melville, James Llewellyn Thorson
"Chronometricals And Horologicals”: The Key To A Basic Theme In The Fiction Of Herman Melville, James Llewellyn Thorson
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
My aim is to study several of Melville’s major works of fiction in the light a pamphlet called “Chronometricals and Horologicals”, which purports to be by one Plotinus Plinlimmon in Melville’s novel Pierre: or The Ambiguities. In my view of Melville’s works, this pamphlet is as near a statement of the author’s philosophy (as dramatized in his works) as can be formulated. I do not maintain that a study of the relationship of the pamphlet to the works will reveal the whole “truth” about the “meaning” of Melville’s fiction, but I do think that it will show a significant …
Concentration Of Selected Constituents In The Blood Of Healthy Women 30 To 90 Years Of Age In Six North Central States, Ruth M. Leverton, Jean Pazur
Concentration Of Selected Constituents In The Blood Of Healthy Women 30 To 90 Years Of Age In Six North Central States, Ruth M. Leverton, Jean Pazur
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The hemoglobin, red cell, total and differential leukocyte, serum protein, calcium, phosphorus and glucose values of the blood of several hundred healthy women 30 to 92 years in six North Central States were determined as one phase of a regional study of nutritional status. The mean, standard deviation and the 95 percent range (mean plus or minus two standard deviations), are shown for each constituent measured. The values for these healthy women tend to be slightly lower than values given as standards in textbooks. Differences between age groups were not significant.
John Steinbeck’S East Of Eden: A Story Of Man, Ned S. Hedges
John Steinbeck’S East Of Eden: A Story Of Man, Ned S. Hedges
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This thesis is a critical comment centered on John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. This particular work by Steinbeck has been thoroughly neglected, and therefore must be discussed. It is also of his earlier works, one which shows the new and positive direction of his writing. The aim is to analyze the book closely in an attempt to ascertain the intention of the author and to judge the success of failure of the novel in the terms under which it was written.
By extension, recurrent themes and techniques in previous novels are need to be included in this analysis. Only after such a …
Voluntary Associations Among Negroes In Lincoln, Nebraska, Ralph V. Thompson
Voluntary Associations Among Negroes In Lincoln, Nebraska, Ralph V. Thompson
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
In almost every study undertaken, socio-economic status has been found to be a factor that is significantly related to memberships in voluntary associations. One of our major interests will be to discover whether or not such a relationship exists among the universe of Negro subjects from which the sample has been drawn. We will test such a relationship in this study.

A Histological Study Of The Postnatal Development Of The Bovine Testis, R. G. Fossland, A. B. Schultze
A Histological Study Of The Postnatal Development Of The Bovine Testis, R. G. Fossland, A. B. Schultze
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A limited number of detailed studies on the development of the bovine testis from birth to sexual maturity have been reported. Further study of bovine testis development appears desirable to furnish additional observations and to note variations that may occur during the developmental process. Information on the process of spermatogenesis should furnish a basis for experimental work designed to promote increased spermatogenic activity in the postpubertal testis as well as for work directed toward promoting complete spermatogenesis at an earlier than usual age. This report is a study of the histological picture of the testes from 56 bulls varying from …
Chromatographic Study Of Ninhydrin-Positive Substances In Etiolated Shoots From Control And Irradiated Maize Seeds, Francis A. Haskins
Chromatographic Study Of Ninhydrin-Positive Substances In Etiolated Shoots From Control And Irradiated Maize Seeds, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Treatment of dormant seeds of a wide variety of plants with X-rays or thermal neutrons results in pronounced effects on stature, survival, and various other attributes in seedlings grown from the treated seeds. It seems highly probable that some of these effects involve alterations in the protein metabolism of the seedling, and these alterations might be expected to lead to changes in levels of such ninhydrin-positive substances as amino acids and peptides. This paper is concerned with a preliminary study in which filter paper chromatography was used to investigate possible differences in ninhydrin-positive substances in etiolated maize shoots grown from …

Genetic, Developmental, And Within-Plant Variation In Free And Bound Coumarin Content Of Sweetclover, G. W. Schaeffer, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Seeds of sweetclover contained a low level of both free and bound coumarin. An increase in both forms of coumarin occurred when seedlings were grown in the light, but no increase was found when they were kept in the dark. First- and second-year plants of Evergreen (CuB phenotype), W-7 (Cub), and W-31 (cu-) were sampled in the field at intervals throughout the 1959 growing season. Leaves, stems, and roots were assayed for free and total coumarin content. The level of free coumarin was highest in the leaves of plants of the CuB phenotype, with a …
