Review Of Sex Ratios And Age Ratios In North American Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1962

Review Of Sex Ratios And Age Ratios In North American Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

This bulletin is by far the most elaborate and comprehensive of any of the publications dealing with waterfowl age and sex ratios that have appeared to date, and represents the presentation and analysis of sex and age ratio data accumulated by the Illinois Natural History Survey over the last 24 years. The several people concerned are to be congratulated for bringing this material into publishable form, and it is commendable that the National Science Foundation undertook the printing costs of this extensively tabulated and illustrated bulletin.

Distributional Notes On Parasitic Mites, William F. Rapp Jr. Jan 1962

Distributional Notes On Parasitic Mites, William F. Rapp Jr.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although much has been written on the systematics of mites little, to date, has been published regarding their distribution. Strandtman and Wharton (1958) have given distributional data on a large area basis i.e. United States, Mexico, etc., but have given only little specific distribution. Unfortunately much of our knowledge relative to mite distribution is limited to a knowledge of type localities. In the case of parasitic mites one cannot assume that the distribution of the parasite is the same as the host. Unfortunately at this time, we do not know what factors limit the distribution of parasitic mites.

The Magnetic Pole In The Formulation Of Electricity And Magnetism, Robert Katz Jan 1962

The Magnetic Pole In The Formulation Of Electricity And Magnetism, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The use of the magnetic pole in the development of the concepts of electricity and magnetism leads unambiguously to a relativistic formulation of the field vectors which is well within the grasp of the sophomore student. The development is wholly consistent with Maxwell's equations and leads to clear and understandable definitions of the field vectors both in vacuum and in the material medium, as well as to the relations defining the transformations of the field vectors.

Conclusions

Farm animals in southeast Kazakhstan are widely infected with sarcosporidia: 96.9% of the sheep, 88% of the cattle, 70% of the camels, and 40% of the swine.

The muscles most often and most heavily infected are: in sheep, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in cattle, the heart and esophagus; in camels, the esophagus, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in swine, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock.

The most objective data on infection of animals can be obtained by studying a minimum of 3 or 4 muscles of different muscular systems simultaneously.

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Events in the attack on the southern oyster drill, Thais haemastoma, by miracidia of the digenetic trematode, Parorchis acanthus, are described.

Infection rates in wild drill populations of various Gulf Coast localities from Florida to Texas were low, but intensity of infection in individual drills was high and caused castration. Infection rates in laboratory experiments were high, but intensities were low.

Pathology of natural infections in drills is described. The infection lasts at least two years, possibly even for life.

Natural infection rates of juvenile herring gulls (Larus argentatus) , ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis), and …

Decedent was a veteran who suffered a hip fracture and a cerebral hemorrhage, rendering him unconscious. He was taken to a Veterans' Administration hospital where he died eighteen days later. From the time he was stricken until his death, he was unconscious, or at most semiconscious. Decedent left an estate consisting of approximately $13,000 in cash which had been inherited from a brother. The United States submitted a claim against his estate under the provisions of a federal act since the death had occurred in a veterans' facility at a time when the decedent was intestate and without heirs or …

The Nebraska Oil And Gas Lien, Richard E. Young Jan 1962

The Nebraska Oil And Gas Lien, Richard E. Young

Nebraska Law Review

Since September 20, 1957, the Nebraska oil and gas lien statute has been in effect. Prior to its passage, Nebraska had only a general mechanic's lien statute. With a growing oil and gas drilling industry, it soon became apparent that due to the complexities and uniqueness of the oil and gas drilling business, the general mechanic's lien statute had many shortcomings when it was stretched to include this industry. In some of these states the oil and gas drilling industry was brought within the terms of the more general mechanic's lien statutes either by judicial construction or by slight amendment …

Physicians—Statute Relieving Physicians, Surgeons, And Nurses From Civil Liability For Emergency Care—Neb. Laws C. 110, P. 349 (1961), Clayton Yeutter

Nebraska Law Review

Jane Doe is injured in an automobile accident and negligently treated by a physician who is the first person to reach the scene. As a result of the physician's negligence, Jane's injuries fail to heal properly, and she files a malpractice suit against the doctor. Prior to the 1961 Session of the Nebraska Legislature, the outcome of Jane's suit would have depended upon the common-law rules applicable to such cases. This the legislature has attempted to change by enactment of a statute. But can the state legislature, in one short paragraph, so simply and decisively sweep away a common-law right?

The Federal Communications Commission And Program Regulation—Violation Of The First Amendment?, William B. Stukas Jan 1962

The Federal Communications Commission And Program Regulation—Violation Of The First Amendment?, William B. Stukas

Nebraska Law Review

Probably no other industry has so captured the interest of the American public or shown such phenomenal yearly growth as the industry of television. Such a dynamic industry is almost certainly going to be the object of controversy. A necessary companion to such controversy is the problem of control—what can be done to change or stabilize the industry, and with whom does this power lie? Congress first answered this question with the passage of the Radio Act of 1927, which was subsequently replaced by the Communications Act of 1934. The power of the United States government to regulate the radio …

Res Ipsa Loquitor—An Analysis Of Its Application And Procedural Effects In Nebraska, Fredric H. Kauffman

Nebraska Law Review

Of the numerous Latin phrases that have crept into the law, the maxim res ipsa loquitor is perhaps the best known. Yet, this innocuous phrase, which means nothing more than "the thing speaks for itself," has been the source of much confusion and disagreement. This divergence of opinion is centered around the proper application and the procedural effect of the rules which have been promulgated by the courts in giving effect to and in applying this phrase. The purpose here is briefly to summarize the different positions taken with respect to this doctrine, and then to take a critical look …

The Case For The Nebraska Merit Plan, Virgil J. Haggart Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

This article is written in the hope that it will be helpful to members of the Nebraska Bar in familiarizing themselves with a proposed constitutional amendment, to be submitted to the electorate in November of this year, which provides for a change in the method of selection of the chief justice and judges of the supreme court, and of district judges and such other judges as the legislature may provide. The system provided for in the proposed amendment has been designated the "Nebraska Merit Plan" and has the active support of the Nebraska State Bar Association. Members of the Bar …

The Fallacy And Fortuity Of Motor Vehicle Homocide, Jack Barker Jan 1962

The Fallacy And Fortuity Of Motor Vehicle Homocide, Jack Barker

Nebraska Law Review

Motor vehicles, present in our society for only a few decades, have given rise to a hodgepodge of complex problems that are difficult to remedy. Their social utility is often momentarily forgotten when one hears or reads an item of news relating to a traffic tragedy in which a life has been taken. The solution to this highway slaughter is seemingly in the distant future, as the facts show that little progress has been made in the past. It is undoubtedly true that carelessness and disregard for the safety of others are contributing factors in a vast majority of fatal …

Municipal Fair Employment Practices In Nebraska, Denis G. Stack Dec 1961

Municipal Fair Employment Practices In Nebraska, Denis G. Stack

Nebraska Law Review

The city of Omaha recently enacted an ordinance regulating fair employment practices (FEP). By the ordinance, employers, employment agencies, and labor organizations are prohibited from discriminating against employees, job applicants, or members on the basis of race, color, creed or national origin. The ordinance was the center of much controversy: the assistant city attorney stated the city lacked the power to enact the ordinance, and the city's leading newspaper opposed the law.

Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, 1961, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

In 1961, American military intelligence was decentralized. The Army was responsible for all intelligence concerning foreign armed forces. Within the Army, the technical services – Transportation Corps, Signal Corps, Ordnance Corps, etc. – were responsible for intelligence concerning analogous organization in foreign organizations. The Transportation Corps was responsible for intelligence concerning foreign transportation equipment and services. Since there was no centralized American military intelligence organization, the Transportation Corps was tasked with supplying intelligence concerning foreign road and rail networks and waterways as well as ports and landing beaches and airfields.

This manual defines transportation intelligence and prescribes Army doctrine concerning …

The Performance Of Alfalfa Synthetics In The First And Advanced Generations, W. R. Kehr, H. O. Graumann, C. C. Lowe, C. O. Gardner

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

During alfalfa breeding investigations conducted at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, numerous superior clones were selected and tested as clones, and in polycross progeny tests. Information was needed on the performance of synthetic varieties in the first and advanced generations, on the optimum number of clones to include in a synthetic variety, and on parent-progeny relationships. Clones with high general combining ability for forage yield as measured by polycross progeny tests, and in certain instances specific combining ability based on single-cross tests, were intercrossed in various ways to produce synthetic varieties. A group of synthetics varying in number of parents …

Chaucer's Merchant And January's "Hevene In Erthe Heere", Paul A. Olson Sep 1961

Chaucer's Merchant And January's "Hevene In Erthe Heere", Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The Merchant in the Canterbury Tales tells the tale of a husband whose misfortunes bear an obvious relation to his own marital pain. He has this advantage over his character: that he is perfectly clear-eyed about the miseries of his marriage. One cannot say so much for January. Though the knowledge that one is not " in the perpetual possession of self-deception " may form small consolation if one is a husband in the Merchant's situation, it does seem to dull his affliction somewhat to imagine a character who endures his own extremities but endures with the torpor and innocence …

A Reappraisal Of The Relationship Between Free And Bound Coumarin In Melilotus, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Sep 1961

A Reappraisal Of The Relationship Between Free And Bound Coumarin In Melilotus, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In early work on coumarin in sweetclover, the assumption was made that the free form of the compound predominated in the intact plant. Subsequent investigations demonstrated the presence of bound coumarin in addition to free, and it was then thought that both forms were normally present. Recent work indicates that when suitable extraction procedures are used, virtually all the coumarin is obtained in the bound form. Such extraction procedures must provide for the rapid inactivation of β-glucosidase, thus preventing the hydrolysis of bound coumarin (apparently the glucoside of cis-o-hydroxycinnamic acid) during the extraction process. In the present study, inactivation …

The Living Network In Prairie Soils, J. E. Weaver Sep 1961

The Living Network In Prairie Soils, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

This study treats of our midcontinental soils and of the wonderful network of roots within them of a vegetation which has clothed them for untold centuries. This vegetation has almost vanished so great has been the toll of the tractor-drawn plow, over- grazing and trampling, injudicious use of poisonous sprays, building of highways, and other causes. Virgin prairie and undisturbed soil occur in quantity only in areas where limestone underlies a shallow soil and prevents plowing or in sand so unstable that destroying the vegetation with its binding roots is almost synonymous with losing the soil. The many thousands of …
