Density-Gradient Centrifugation: Non-Ideal Sedimentation And The Interaction Of Major And Minor Components, Myron K. Brakke, J. M. Daly
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A small amount of southern bean mosaic virus was contained in a narrow zone after density-gradient centrifugation, but in a much wider zone after centrifugation with a large amount of a second virus. Zone-spreading of a major component by non-ideal sedimentation in density-gradient centrifugation can cause zone spreading of a minor component that the major component overlaps.

New Autoionizing Levels In Helium, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
We recently reported the excitation of autoionizing states in helium by positive-ion bombardment and their subsequent observation as fine structure in the energy spectrum of the emitted electrons. With somewhat increased resolution we have now observed additional levels in helium including parts of two series not previously reported.

Peroxidase And Polyphenoloxidase Activities And Free Ninhydrin-Positive Substances In Underground Buds Of Ironweed And Leafy Spurge, W. G. Monson, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Peroxidase activity in extracts of underground buds of ironweed and leafy spurge was at the lowest level during the period of dormancy in both species, and increased when dormancy was broken. Polyphenoloxidase activity of bud extracts was high for ironweed and very low for leafy spurge, and showed no relationship with dormancy in either species. Ninhydrin-positive substances generally and sulfur-containing amino acids in particular increased during the dormant period.
Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, J. E. Weaver
Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Nebraska is in the central part of the prairie plains. Yet grassland is only one kind of its varied vegetation. A westward extension of the great deciduous forest occurs along the Missouri River. It is bordered by shrubs, patches of which occur in favorable places to the western border. The foothills of the northwest have a forest of pine not unlike that of the Black Hills. On the level lands and among the wind-blown hills of sand there are hundreds of lakes, swamps, and marshes. The Missouri, Platte, and Niobrara Rivers extend across the state. They and their numerous tributaries …

Two New Species Of Plistophora (Microsporidea) From North American Fish With A Synopsis Of Microsporidea Of Freshwater And Euryhaline Fishes, Robert E. Putz, Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Two new species of Microsporidea, Plistophora salmonae from steelhead and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and Plistophora cepedianae from gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) are described. Schizonts to spores of P. cepedianae were found at one time within the same cyst, while only sporonts and spores of P. salmonae were found within the cyst. An illustrated synopsis of the known Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes is given.

Eimeria Aurati N. Sp. (Protozoa:Eimeriidae) From Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) In North America, Glenn L. Hoffman
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
In March, 1962 this laboratory received some goldfish for disease diagnosis from Mr. Richard Rice, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Seven of 29 fish examined were infected with Eimeria. These fish had long, whitish, opaque fecal casts hanging from the anus. The casts were composed almost entirely of oocysts. When shed, they sank to the bottom and looked somewhat like "spent" tapeworms (Figs. 1, 2). The infected fish were very lethargic and their intestines were swollen with contained fluid. Although I believe that the Eimeria is pathogenic, a heavy infection of other parasites made this difficult to determine. These fish had apparently …

Studies On Myxosoma Cartilaginis N. Sp. (Protozoa: Myxosporidea) Of Centrarchid Fish And A Synopsis Of The Myxosoma Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman, Robert E. Putz, Clarence E. Dunbar
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Myxosoma cartilaginis n. sp. is described from the cartilage of Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill), L. cyanellus (green sunfish) and Micropterus salmoides (largemouth black bass). The development of the parasite is described from naturally infected fish which were held in spore-free water after infection. The sporoplasm invades cartilage, and becomes a multinucleate trophozoite which forms pansporoblasts, each of which produces 2 to 4 spores. The first spores appear in 7 weeks.
The histopathology in the above fish consists at first of little cellular reaction, but after 4 to 5 months epithelioid granulomas appear arround some of the spore masses. Cartilage liquefaction is …

Some Side-Effects And After-Effects Of Experimental Endocrine Treatments Used To Modify The Natural Estrual Rhythm, L. E. Casida
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The side-effects and after-effects to be considered in this discussion are those which grow out of experimental attempts to modify the natural estrual rhythm, and which have a bearing on the subsequent fertility ofthe animal. They are the effects that at one-and-the-same- time are the despair and the hope of workers on technological control of reproduction. They are the despair in that they detract from our immediate ability to control reproduction; they are the hope in that we may be able to learn more about the reproductive process in our attempts to analyze and understand them.

Roles Of Hypothalamus And Hypophysis In The Control Of The Estrous Cycle, A. V. Nalbandov
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The interrelation between the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary gland has been firmly established. It is not the intention of this report to review the literature on this extensive subject. Such reviews are available in "Advances in Neuroendocrinology" (Nalbandov, 2), and since the time of this publication many papers on this subject have appeared in current journals. For the purposes of the present discussion a few fundamental facts will be restated, but the major part of my presentation will deal with my own views of the research areas which should be of special interest to animal scientists concerned with phenomena …
Hormonal Control Of Reproductive Activity In The Ewe, J. F. Wagner
Hormonal Control Of Reproductive Activity In The Ewe, J. F. Wagner
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
There are many advantages which result from synchronizing the estrous period in a ewe flock. In situations where the ewes are not hand bred to the ram, the synchronization of estrus makes the application of artificial insemination (AI) techniques more efficient. Detection of estrus usually is more reliable in a synchronized flock. Only 3 to 4 days are needed to detect estrus in 90 percent of a synchronized flock, whereas 16 to 18 days are normally required. This allows the AI technician to plan the number of breedings and have semen available. When hormones are given in the feed, an …

A Legal-Economic Critique Of Nebraska Watercourse Law, Clayton K. Yeutter
Nebraska Law Review
Nothing is more emotion packed than a discussion of ways and means to allocate a resource that is essential to the maintenance of human life. Yet the scarcity of water in many parts of our nation makes such a discussion imperative. Although Nebraska's landscape is dotted with innumerable creeks and streams, the state's tremendous irrigation developments have long since created water disputes and a legal system for adjudicating them. This article will attempt to show that from a legal-economic viewpoint at least some changes are long overdue.

The Problem Of Selecting And Drafting An Investment Clause For A Trust, Thomas H. Delay
The Problem Of Selecting And Drafting An Investment Clause For A Trust, Thomas H. Delay
Nebraska Law Review
The benefits which the income beneficiary and remainderman ultimately derive from a trust depend primarily, notwithstanding the trustee's expertise, upon the investment powers which the trustee has been given by the settlor. In selecting these investment powers to be conferred by the trust instrument, the settlor and his lawyer must consider two familiar problems. The first problem is to determine the type of investment power to give the trustee which will be most beneficial to both the income beneficiary and remainderman, not only for today, but for the duration of the trust. The second problem is to draft the trust …

Inflammatory Publicity In State Criminal Cases, Donald F. Burt
Inflammatory Publicity In State Criminal Cases, Donald F. Burt
Nebraska Law Review
Much has been written about the evils of, and solutions to, the problem of trial by newspaper. It is not the purpose of this article to attempt an exhaustive exposition of all that has been said before, but rather to summarize the problem, to examine the past approaches to its solution, and then to discuss the relative merits of proposed new solutions, such as: (1) amendment and/or enforcement of Canon 20 [of the American Bar Association Canons of Professional Ethics]; (2) adoption by the news media of enforceable codes of ethics; and (3) adoption of criminal legislation which would punish …
The Duty To Act: A Proposed Rule, Wallace M. Rudolph
The Duty To Act: A Proposed Rule, Wallace M. Rudolph
Nebraska Law Review
Adoption of a proposed duty to act rule will do little to change the behavior of the individual, except insofar as it might create an environment in which he could be a better citizen. But the rule will protect and compensate the few good Samaritans who are sometimes penalized for their virtues. Moreover, the rule will not turn anyone into a busybody, for the consideration of reasonableness of action will not allow more protection to the really officious intermeddler than he now has under the law. Nor will such a rule cause persons to fear for their property because of …

Resale Price Maintenance—Consignment Agreements—Simpson V. Union Oil Co., 377 U.S. 13 (1964), Thomas B. Allington
Nebraska Law Review
Simpson leased a gasoline service station for a twelve-month period from Union Oil Company and was required by the company to sign a consignment agreement. Under the agreement, Union Oil not only retained title to all consigned gasoline until it was sold but also reserved the power to establish the retail price. Simpson sold gasoline below the set price in order to meet local competition, and Union Oil thereupon refused to renew the lease on the ground that Simpson had violated the consignment agreement. Simpson sued for treble damages under section 4 of the Clayton Act on the ground that …
