Genetic And Biochemical Aspects Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Synthesis In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, A. Kleinhofs
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
In sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) the cis- and trans-isomers of o-hydroxycinnamic acid occur primarily as the respective, β-D-glucosides. Available evidence indicates that these glucosides are formed via the following pathway: phenylalanine (formed from shikimic acid) → trans-cinnamic acid → o-coumaric acid (trans-o-hydroxycinnamic acid) → o-coumaryl glucoside (trans-β-D-glucosyl-o-hydroxycinnamic acid) → coumarinyl glucoside (cis-β-D-glucosyl-o-hydroxycinnamic acid). In tissues that are disrupted, coumarinyl glucoside is rapidly hydrolyzed by the action of endogenous β-glucosidase to yield coumarinic acid, which lactonizes spontaneously to form coumarin. The cu …

Chromogen-Ratio Method For Determining Digestibility Of Plants By Grasshoppers, E. A. Heinrichs, K. P. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The concentration of plant pigments in excreta vs. food provided a measure of digestibility of most plants by grasshoppers. Digestibility values obtained with the chromogen-ratio method and consumption-excretion ratios were highly correlated (r = 0.789**). Greatly disparate results were obtained in 4 cases. The chromogen method, when applicable, gave better duplicability and eliminated many of the errors and much labor associated with consumption-excretion ratios.

Observation Of Doppler-Shifted Peaks In The Energy Spectrum Of Autoionizatioin Electrons From Ar+ -Ar Collisions, M. Eugene Rudd, T. Jorgensen, Jr., D. J. Volz
Observation Of Doppler-Shifted Peaks In The Energy Spectrum Of Autoionizatioin Electrons From Ar+ -Ar Collisions, M. Eugene Rudd, T. Jorgensen, Jr., D. J. Volz
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
It is well known that when heavy ions traverse gas, electron pickup into excited states occurs. If the fast excited atom subsequently decays by radiating a photon, the energy of the photon will be Doppler shifted due to the motion of the source. This effect may be used to distinguish the radiation from stationary and moving atoms. For example, this method was used by Meinel to deduce the motion of solar protons streaming downward through the earth's atmosphere.
If instead the moving atom decays by autoionization, the ejected electron should also show a shift in energy analogous to the Doppler …

Inheritance Of Behavioral Characters In F2 Mallard X Pintail (Anas Platyrhynchos L. X Anas Acutas L.) Hybrids, Roger S. Sharpe, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
The present study was undertaken to compare the inheritance of behavioral and morphological features of two closely related species of Anas, and to attempt to establish whether any significant degree of behavioral variation occurs in the second generation which could be attributed to these genetic processes.
Two closely related species of Anas, the Common Mallard (A. p. platyrhynchos) and the Common Pintail (A. a. acuta), were selected for study. Both species have been repeatedly hybridized in captivity (GRAY, 1958; PHILLIPS, 1915, 1921), and occasionally hybrids occur in the wild. MAYR (1963) has commented on the …
Analog Plotting System For Recording Energy Spectra Of Low Energy Charged Particles, M. Eugene Rudd
Analog Plotting System For Recording Energy Spectra Of Low Energy Charged Particles, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
During recent measurements of energy spectra of electrons emitted from gases under positive ion bombardment an analyzing and plotting system was developed which has some unique features. Utilizing an electrostatic analyzer, it sweeps over the desired energy range and plots a graph directly in electron volts. With suitable modifications it could also be used for positive ions. Energies from near 0 to about 1000 eV have been plotted but this range could be extended. Usable graphs have been obtained at counting rates as low as 3 counts/sec.
Compensation is provided for fluctuations in the signal due to slow or rapid …

Corrections In Transition, Myrl E. Alexander
Corrections In Transition, Myrl E. Alexander
Nebraska Law Review
Imprisonment, as it is used today in this country and in others throughout the world, began as an experiment in punishment and reformation less than 200 years ago. It is still an experiment, and, unfortunately, it will remain an experiment for a long time to come. As a means of punishment and as an instrument with which to change criminal behavior, imprisonment still is a failure when it must be acknowledged that even among the best correctional institutions at least thirty per cent of their inmates become repeaters. Why is this so? Is it that prisons and other correctional institutions, …

What Is Wrong With The Prison System?, Nathan Leopold
Nebraska Law Review
The prisons of today are a failure, for they are not effective instruments of rehabilitation of their inmates. To remedy this failure requires a complete revision of our penal philosophy and a firm adherence to rehabilitation as the only function to be served.

A Preface, Roman L. Hruska
Nebraska Law Review
This symposium [A Symposium on Prisons and Correctional Law (Part I)] sponsored by the law college is most timely, as new attention is being given to what lies beyond once an offender is brought to justice. Punishment, control, rehabilitation, more diversified facilities, better-trained staffs, wider range of inmate programs, collaboration with other institutions, community employment or training, and more are included.
A Legislative Approach To The Fourth Amendment, E. John Stanley
A Legislative Approach To The Fourth Amendment, E. John Stanley
Nebraska Law Review
Legislatures of several states have recently expressed an unprecedented interest in the fourth amendment of the United States Constitution' by enacting statutes governing police and court procedures for search and seizure problems. Nebraska, following the lead of these states, has completely rewritten its search and seizure statutes. Nearly all of the Nebraska statutes are adaptations of statutes which have originated in other states. The fact that Nebraska, a state with few metropolitan areas and a resulting low per capita crime rate, has enacted these statutes, when the apparent need for them is slight, suggests that the motivation for their passage …

Part I of the symposium "The Tasks of Penology: A Symposium on Prisons and Correctional Law" was intended to provide the reader with a general background in the theories and aims of our modern correctional system. These concepts have been constantly changing throughout the history of penology. If there is one "task" upon which there is mutual agreement, it would be rehabilitation, but the question still remains: How do you rehabilitate? There has been a growing realization that modifications have to be made in the traditional penitentiary system to accomplish this goal. It has also been recognized that aspects of …

Development And Accomplishments Of Sentencing Institutes In The Federal Judicial System, Luther W. Youngdahl
Nebraska Law Review
The judges of the United States courts long have been concerned with the improvement of the administration of criminal justice in the federal courts. Over the years one problem in particular—the wide-spread differences in sentencing philosophies and practices—has eluded solution. Deliberations of the Judicial Conference of Senior Circuit Judges jointly with the Committee on the Administration of the Criminal Law of the Judicial Conference of the United States gave rise to a proposal for legislation to permit the establishment of institutes and joint councils on sentencing. Legislation (H.R.J. Res. 424) was approved by the President on August 25, 1958, as …

The “Used In The Automobile Business” Exclusion Of The Standard Family Automobile Policy, Robert S. Lingo
Nebraska Law Review
One of the painful results of the ownership of an automobile is the recurring need to take it to a service station or garage for repairs. After such repairs are completed, an employee of the garage will often test drive the automobile to check the completed repairs. While on such an errand, the serviceman may become involved in an automobile accident in which he is at fault.
