A Revision Of The Genus Furnaricola(Mallophaga) With Descriptions Of New Species, M. A. Carriker Jr. Jan 1967

A Revision Of The Genus Furnaricola(Mallophaga) With Descriptions Of New Species, M. A. Carriker Jr.

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The present paper has been prepared with much care for two reasons: The first and most urgent is to clarify the taxonomic position of the genus itself, which has been a controversial one since it was placed under the synonomy of Rallicola in the 1952 "Checklist of Mallophaga" by Hopkins and Clay. The second reason is to describe additional material which has been collected by the author since the genus was established in 1944 and also to record its occurrence on two other families of birds, from one of which no Mallophaga have previously been taken..

It will be noted …

Summary

Structures were seen in the merozoites of Eimeria intestinalis which were markedly resembled a centriole. Nine tubules formed a ringlet near the nucleus, with one more tubule in the center. This structure, although similar to a typical centriole, differs in that it has a central tubule.

Trans-O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Glucosylation In Cell-Free Extracts Of Melilotus Alba, A. Kleinhofs, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Jan 1967

Trans-O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Glucosylation In Cell-Free Extracts Of Melilotus Alba, A. Kleinhofs, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The glucosylation of trans-o-hydroxycinnamic acid has been demonstrated in cell-free extracts of MeliIotus alba. The reaction requires UDPG, a sulfhydryl compound, and an active extract from sweet clover leaves. The product of the reaction has been tentatively identified as trans-β-D-glucosyl-o-hydroxycinnamic acid.

A Bioassay For Detecting Compounds Which Stimulate Or Deter Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, G. R. Manglitz, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A bioassay employing sweetclover root disks impregnated with various plant extracts has been developed. The bioassay has been used to demonstrate the distribution of substances influencing feeding in fractionated water-methanol-chloroforrn extracts of Melilotus infesta Guss. and M. oficinalis L. Lam. leaves. Indications are that substances responsible for the resistance of M. infesta or the susceptibility of M. officinalis to feeding by adult sweetclover weevils, Sitona cylindricollis Fåhraeus, reside in the water-methanol fraction.

Phospholipids Of Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, J. M. Shively, A. A. Benson Jan 1967

Phospholipids Of Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, J. M. Shively, A. A. Benson

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Cells and spent growth media from sulfur- and thiosulfate-grown cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans were analyzed. The phosphatides were examined by thinlayer chromatography, and the products of their hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid and methanolic potassium hydroxide were separated by paper chromatography. The phospholipids in both cells and spent growth media were identified as phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl N-monomethylethanolamine, phosphatidyl glycerol, and diphosphatidyl glycerol. These comprised about 97% of the total lipid phosphorus. Lyso-phosphatidyl-N-monomethylethanolamine and lysophosphatidylglycerol accounted for the remaining 3%. The percentage of the total lipid phosphorus accounted for by each phospholipid depended on the age of the culture.

Sympatry Changes And Hybridization Incidence In Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1967

Sympatry Changes And Hybridization Incidence In Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Changes in general fall and winter distributions of Mallards and Black Ducks over the past century have resulted in markedly increased sympatric contact during pair formation between these two forms, and have been responsible for increased opportunities for hybridization. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife records of hybrids from 34 states indicate a minimal current hybridization rate that is about 4% of the frequency expected on the basis of mating according to mathematical probabilities of chance contact. Thus, hybridization is most frequent where both forms are almost equally abundant, indicating that no reinforcement of differences reducing hybridization in the primary …

Ontogeny And Anatomy Of The Flower Of Limnocharis Flava (Butomaceae), Robert B. Kaul Jan 1967

Ontogeny And Anatomy Of The Flower Of Limnocharis Flava (Butomaceae), Robert B. Kaul

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The flowers of Limnocharis flava (L.) Buch. are borne in an indeterminate umbel and each consists of three sepals, three yellow petals, and about 18 carpels surrounded by numerous stamens and staminodia. The androecium is centrifugally developed, and the last-formed members are staminodial; it is supplied by branching vascular systems. Carpels arise almost simultaneously, and a prominent residual floral apex remains. The carpels are partially conduplicately closed and are also primitive in possessing laminar placentation and in lacking differentiation of a style. The gynoecium is essentially apocarpous, but there are slight fusions of adjacent carpels near their ventral margins where …

On The Ecology And Distribution Of Echinococcus Spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) And Characteristics Of Their Development In The Intermediate Host, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1967

On The Ecology And Distribution Of Echinococcus Spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) And Characteristics Of Their Development In The Intermediate Host, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) and E. multilocularis Leuckart, 1863 [syn. Alveococcus multilocularis (Leuckart, 1863) Abuladze, 1960] are distinguished by well defined biological and developmental characteristics. Obligatory predator-prey relationships of the hosts segregate the two species ecologically under natural conditions. The larval stage of E. granulosus develops slowly in long-lived ungulates, while that of E. multilocularis becomes infective within a few months in intermediate hosts (rodents) having a life expectancy of less than a year.

Existing parasite-host relationships of these cestodes had become established at least as early as late Pleistocene time, and two biologically distinct forms of E. granulosus can …

Theory Of Rbe For Heavy Ion Bombardment Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses, J. J. Butts, Robert Katz Jan 1967

Theory Of Rbe For Heavy Ion Bombardment Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses, J. J. Butts, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The response of dry enzymes and viruses to heavy ion bombardment may be predicted from their response to γ-irradiation (and no further knowledge of their size and structure). The molecules are approximated as point particles whose response to ionization is the same for heavy ion bombardment as for γ-rays. From the δ-ray distribution formula and an extrapolated range-energy relation for electrons, the radial distribution of secondary ionization energy may be found. Under this dosage distribution the inactivation probability may be found as a function of radial distance from the ion's path, and then may be integrated over all space to …

Adsorption Of Free Fatty Acids On Cells Of Certain Microorganisms, R. B. Maxcy, C. W. Dill Jan 1967

Adsorption Of Free Fatty Acids On Cells Of Certain Microorganisms, R. B. Maxcy, C. W. Dill

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Information on the inhibitory effect of free fatty acids was sought by growing lactic streptococci in the presence of labeled fatty acids and collecting the cells on membrane filters. The distribution of the radioactivity indicated adsorption by the bacteria. As the number of cells in the growth medium increased, accumulation of radioactivity with the cells on the filter increased. The cells accumulated less than one-tenth as much radioactivity from sodium butyrate as from lauric acid. Washing the cells on the filter with water decreased radioactivity. More complete elution of the radioactivity was obtained by filtering the mixture after it was …

Panthera Atrox (Mammalia: Felidae) From Central Alaska, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Helen L. Foster Jan 1967

Panthera Atrox (Mammalia: Felidae) From Central Alaska, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Helen L. Foster

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A lower jaw of the large Pleistocene cat Panthera atrox (Leidy) was found on an alluvial flat near the mouth of Lost Chicken Creek, about 180 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. It was probably washed out of carbonaceous silt deposits which, in the adjacent area, have also yielded bones of Equus, Bison, Rangifer, Cervus, and Elephantidae. The Panthera jaw falls within the size range of the series from Rancho La Brea, California, and differs from Rancho La Brea specimens only in a few characteristics. P. atrox appears to have been significantly larger than extinct or …

New Records Of The Pigmy Shrew Microsorex Hoyi (Baird) In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1967

New Records Of The Pigmy Shrew Microsorex Hoyi (Baird) In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The results of extensive trapping (ca. 7000 small mammals from the Alaskan mainland) indicate that the pigmy shrew, Microsorex hoyi (Baird), is a comparatively rare mammal in Alaska. From January, 1949, to the present, my co-workers and I have collected only seven specimens. These few animals considerably extend the known geographic range of M. hoyi in Alaska.

Joint And Mutual Wills In Nebraska And The Marital Deduction, Gary D. Blair Jan 1967

Joint And Mutual Wills In Nebraska And The Marital Deduction, Gary D. Blair

Nebraska Law Review

Many couples who have toiled all their lives for their worldly goods often wish to make a common disposition of their property. The usual situation is for a couple to leave the entire estate of the first to die to the surviving spouse either absolutely or in the form of a life estate on condition that the last to die leave it to designated third persons. This type of common disposition is often effectuated by the use of a joint, mutual, or reciprocal will. A recent state supreme court decision has changed Nebraska's position concerning the contractual aspect of such …

The Rights Of A Public Employee In Nebraska, William E. Marsh Dec 1966

The Rights Of A Public Employee In Nebraska, William E. Marsh

Nebraska Law Review

In Local 507, IBEW v. Hastings, the Nebraska Supreme Court has followed the majority rule in declaring that governmental employees do not have collective bargaining rights in the same sense that their counterparts in private enterprise have. The legislative aftermath of this decision became one of the most contested issues of the 1967 unicameral session. The specific rights governmental employees and employee organizations possess after the Hastings decision and the new legislation, as well as the generally expanding role of government in our society, compel a reexamination of the status of the governmental employee.
