Ec67-1181 19th Century American Furniture And Furnishings, Magdalene Pfister Jan 1967

Ec67-1181 19th Century American Furniture And Furnishings, Magdalene Pfister

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

By popular definition an antique is an article one hundred or more years old. It is from the Victorian period that we have the "new antiques." The nineteenth century is considered by many authorities as a time of poor design and bad taste. However, when some of the pieces of furniture were taken from the clutter of patterns and bric-a-brac, they possess a certain charm. The furnishings reflect the ambitious people who were climbing industrially and socially. The history of furnishings in the nineteenth centory has no clear-cut pattern, but many overlapping developments and changing fashions. An industrial revolution was …

Availability Of Niacin In Corn And Milo For Swine, W. G. Luce, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman Jan 1967

Availability Of Niacin In Corn And Milo For Swine, W. G. Luce, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Niacin has been recognized for several years as a dietary essential for swine. Its presence in feedstuffs is well known, but the biological availability of niacin in certain cereal grains commonly fed to swine has not been clearly established. Research has been reported indicating the niacin of white corn and wheat is largely unavailable to the pig (Kodieek et al., 1956; Kodicek et al., 1959 and Luce et al., 1966). Several workers have also obtained evidence that the niacin of corn is in a bound form and largely unavailable to the rat. (Laguna and Carpenter, 1951; Pearson …

Influence Of A Dietary Supplement Of Lysine Feed At Two Levels Of Protein On Growth, Feed Efficiency And Carcass Characteristics Of Swine, M. H. Jurgens, D. B. Hudman, C. H. Adams, E. R. Peo, Jr. Jan 1967

Influence Of A Dietary Supplement Of Lysine Feed At Two Levels Of Protein On Growth, Feed Efficiency And Carcass Characteristics Of Swine, M. H. Jurgens, D. B. Hudman, C. H. Adams, E. R. Peo, Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Mertz et al. (1949) demonstrated that lysine is essential in the nutrition of swine. Since then considerable research has been conducted to determine the level of lysine needed to promote optimum growth and feed conversion in swine. Recent investigations (Crum et al., 1964; Wallace et al., 1964; Jensen et al., 1965) have been designed to measure the physical and chemical changes in the animal body which may accompany observed differences in performance due to varying lysine and protein levels.

Size Distribution Of Soil Aggregates As Influenced By Microorganisms, H. E. Weakly, T. M. Mccalla, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Numerous reports have presented evidence that soil aggregates are formed and/or stabilized by microorganisms. In most instances, the aggregates were not studied in respect to size distribution. The present report is concerned with the size distribution of aggregates and particles in a soil material after inoculation with three different inocula and incubation for varying periods of time.

Suggested: An Objective Standard Of Care For Minors In Nebraska, William B. Fenton Jan 1967

Suggested: An Objective Standard Of Care For Minors In Nebraska, William B. Fenton

Nebraska Law Review

Tort law is not static. Existing as it does to provide a means of recompense for those injured by "conduct which is socially unreasonable," it follows that as society changes so too may social development recharacterize people and their conduct so that what was once realistic is now undesirable. This comment is concerned with the changes that are occurring in the standard of care which is required of minors participating in certain adult activities. In all of the cases adjudicated by the Nebraska Supreme Court in which a minor has been charged with negligence, contributory rather than primary negligence has …

Administrative Justice And Conclusionary Findings, Steven D. Brumley Jan 1967

Administrative Justice And Conclusionary Findings, Steven D. Brumley

Nebraska Law Review

In Nebraska, as well as in other jurisdictions, a large segment of the economy is regulated and controlled by administrative agencies. It is, therefore, very important that the action taken by these administrative agencies be fair and just. Nebraska, however, does not have a code of standard procedures for administrative agencies, and it is submitted that inconsistency and injustice have resulted from this deficiency. The purpose of this article is to deal extensively with one particular administrative problem in Nebraska and pose a possible solution. The scope of this article is limited to the activities of the Nebraska State Railway …

The Information Gap In Antitrust Enforcement, Kirkley S. Coulter Jan 1967

The Information Gap In Antitrust Enforcement, Kirkley S. Coulter

Nebraska Law Review

In a series of cases culminating in the decision of United States v. Von's Grocery Co. in May 1966, the Supreme Court seems to have embraced a more and more rigidly mathematical approach to the enforcement of the Celler-Kefauver Anti-Merger Act of 1950. In this case no misbehavior on the part of the defendant (or of anyone else) was charged. The attack went not to conduct but solely to industry structure. The illegality was found by the court to rest heavily on certain statistical trends which it believed constituted an increase in "economic concentration" in the Los Angeles grocery market. …

Traps For The Unwary—The Problems In Seeking Injunctive Or Monetary Relief From An Uncompensated Taking By The Federal Government, David R. Warner Jr. Jan 1967

Traps For The Unwary—The Problems In Seeking Injunctive Or Monetary Relief From An Uncompensated Taking By The Federal Government, David R. Warner Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

The fifth amendment to the United States Constitution provides that "[P]rivate property [shall not] be taken for public use, without just compensation." On the not too frequent occasions when the federal government fails to adhere to this directive, there are two remedies available—a suit against federal officials to enjoin them from acting to the property owner's detriment, or a suit for damages (commonly referred to as inverse condemnation). The lawyer for the property owner who has found it necessary to seek one of these remedies will soon discover that the government has available a large battery of defenses and other …

An Academic Lawyer Plays Armchair Analyst: Some Speculations On The Relevance Of Psychoanalysis To The Law, Leonard V. Kaplan Jan 1967

An Academic Lawyer Plays Armchair Analyst: Some Speculations On The Relevance Of Psychoanalysis To The Law, Leonard V. Kaplan

Nebraska Law Review

The purpose of this paper is to briefly analyze two levels of potential and actual interrelationship between psychoanalytic insights and legal working. The first is psychoanalysis as a total philosophy of man, descriptive of man and all his institutions including legal ones; the second is psychoanalysis as a tool for the law where legal institutions seek for value reasons to intervene in a particular situation where the psychology of an individual(s) is at issue. The latter use of psychological theorems and methods covers the legal spectrum from cases of "undue influence" in wills to questions of "mens rea" in criminal, …

Probate Jurisdiction Problems, Kent E. Person Jan 1967

Probate Jurisdiction Problems, Kent E. Person

Nebraska Law Review

Probate law is currently undergoing considerable nationwide study and change. Many states have recently revised their probate law. The American Bar Association in conjunction with the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws has considered drafting a Uniform Probate Code in order to resolve some of the current problems in administration of estates. One of the basic aims of the reform has been to remedy the waste and delay caused by inefficient probate procedure. The problem in Nebraska is a result of the county court, which is the probate court, lacking general and equitable jurisdiction. Because the county court …

Problems In Drafting And Administering Discretionary Trusts, Richard R. Endacott Jan 1967

Problems In Drafting And Administering Discretionary Trusts, Richard R. Endacott

Nebraska Law Review

A discretionary trust is one which gives the trustee the authority to exercise his own judgment in applying certain provisions contained in the trust instrument. Discretionary provisions are most prevalent in regard to the trustee's authority as to time, manner, amount, or circumstances of payment of income or principal to certain beneficiaries. The practical problems involved in drafting and administering such trusts too frequently are given insufficient consideration. Perhaps the most difficult problem connected with discretionary trusts is that of communicating the settlor's true intentions from settlor to draftsman to trustee. This article examines the meanings of the most common …

The Establishment Of Small Claims Courts In Nebraska, Stephen G. Olson Jan 1967

The Establishment Of Small Claims Courts In Nebraska, Stephen G. Olson

Nebraska Law Review

Our judicial system is predicated upon the proposition that all men are equal before the law. However, certain inequities of the civil judicial process still exist. One of these inequities is the inability of a poor individual to sue for his rightful small claim. Seldom does a man of meager means have the financial ability to hire an attorney to prosecute his case, and to pay the court costs in his effort to collect a small claim due him. Thus, in the area of civil suits for small claims, "equal justice for all" is a hollow phrase. The most feasible …

Proceedings Of The Second Annual Meeting Of The National Collegiate Honors Council. Washington, D.C., October 20-22, 1967, Walter D. Weir

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

The National Collegiate Honors Council conducted its second annual meeting at the Statler-Hilton Hotel, Washington, D.C., October 20-22, 1967. About 230 faculty members, administrators, and students attended this meeting. The proceedings of that meeting are contained in this volume. The meeting was basically devoted to three concerns: (1) the problem of liaison between secondary schools and college honors programs; (2) problems and developments in the offering of science courses for honors students; (3) the exchange of information about problems and new directions in the honors program of those participating in the meeting. For the most part, the papers in this …

Physicochemical Limnology Of Four Reservoirs In Southwest Nebraska, Donald L. Tennant, Robert E. Thomas, Robert E. Thomas, Joe Gray Jan 1967

Physicochemical Limnology Of Four Reservoirs In Southwest Nebraska, Donald L. Tennant, Robert E. Thomas, Robert E. Thomas, Joe Gray

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Physicochemical data from four reservoirs in Nebraska taken within a 30-hour period in August, revealed moderate thermal stratification, closely associated in two reservoirs with the functioning low-level outlet. The reservoirs with thermoclines exhibited greater temperature ranges and contained cooler waters than did reservoirs without thermoclines. The distribution of fish as detected on sonar often revealed the presence and location of a thermocline prior to physical or chemical data verification.

Without exception, the larger the reservoir and the lower the outlet, the better the reservoir fishery. Downstream fisheries ranked the same with one exception.

Ticks In Relation To Human Diseases Caused By Rickettsia Species, Harry Hoogstraal Jan 1967

Ticks In Relation To Human Diseases Caused By Rickettsia Species, Harry Hoogstraal

United States Navy: Publications

Rickettsiae (185) are obligate intracellular parasites that multiply by binary fission in the cells of both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. They are pleomorphic coccobacillary bodies with complex cell walls containing muramic acid, and internal structures composed of ribonucleic and deoxyri bonucleic acids. Rickettsiae show independent metabolic activity with amino acids and intermediate carbohydrates as substrates, and are very susceptible to tetracyclines as well as to other antibiotics. They may be considered as fastidious bacteria whose major unique character is their obligate intracellu lar life, although there is at least one exception to this. In appearance, they range from coccoid forms …
