Development And Vasculature Of The Flowers Of Lophotocarpus Calycinus And Sagittaria Latifolia (Alismaceae), Robert B. Kaul
Development And Vasculature Of The Flowers Of Lophotocarpus Calycinus And Sagittaria Latifolia (Alismaceae), Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The development of the bisexual flower of Lophotocarpus calycinus and of the unisexual flowers of Sagittaria latifolia has been observed. In all cases floral organs arise in acropetal succession. In L. calycinus, after initiation of the perianth, the first whorl of stamens to form consists of six stamens and is ordinarily followed by two alternating whorls of six stamens each. The very numerous carpels are initiated spirally. In the male flower of S. latifolia the androecium develops in spiral order. A few rudimentary carpels appear near the floral apex after initiation of the stamens. There are no staminodia. The female …
Evaluation Of The Dispersion Relations Of Photoproduction, Paul Finkler
Evaluation Of The Dispersion Relations Of Photoproduction, Paul Finkler
Paul Finkler Papers
A modification of the Omnes method is used to solve the singular integral equations for the 3-3 partialwave amplitudes of photoproduction. The effects of multipion production are assumed to be negligible. The method requires a knowledge of the phase at all energies. Consequently, it is necessary to treat the corresponding pion-nucleon scattering problem to determine the eBect of the high-energy behavior of the phase on the solution for the scattering amplitude at low energies. The sharply resonant nature of the problen suggests an approximation in the form of solution, rather than in the Born terms, which leads to relatively simple …
Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly
Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly
Robert G. Fuller Publications
The measured electrical conductivity of pure RbCl is separated into the usual anion and cation contributions with activation energies of 2.55 and 1.58 eV, respectively. By comparison with corresponding results for KC1 and NaCl it is found that the alkali-chloride anion and cation activation energies differ most for nearly equal anion and cation radii. We conclude from this anomalous trend that an extension of conventional theory is required.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The effects of feeding diets containing no fat, 3% hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO) or graded levels (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 or 3%) of safflower oil (SO) on serum cholesterol, lipids and protein level; on total heart and liver cholesterol and lipid level and on growth rate and skin condition were studied in weanling Yorkshire and Yorkshire x Hampshire pigs. Pigs fed the fat-free diet for 21 weeks developed severe skin lesions not observed in pigs fed HCO diets. Highly significant elevation of serum, liver and heart lipid and liver cholesterol, and a highly significant depression of total serum protein were observed …

Distribution Of Eggs And Leaf Mines Of Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Attacking Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus Virginiana, Elvis A. Heinrichs
Distribution Of Eggs And Leaf Mines Of Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Attacking Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus Virginiana, Elvis A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Cedar at Larned, Kansas, appeared to be more severely damaged in the upper and southern portions of the trees. There was a significant difference, in numbers of eggs and leaf mines, between the upper and lower halves and between compass directions; the upper and southern portions of the trees being most highly infested.
Choristoneura houstonana (Grote) is a pest of eastern red cedar, Juniperus virginiana, grown as a home landscape ornamental in shelter belts and windbreaks in western Kansas. It has been present for many years but the first reliable record in Kansas was in 1964, when it was sent …
The Alchemy Of Art: A Study In The Evolution Of The Creative Mind Of John Keats, G. Brian Sullivan
The Alchemy Of Art: A Study In The Evolution Of The Creative Mind Of John Keats, G. Brian Sullivan
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
From the time John Keats began Endymion (March 1817) until his abandonment of the second version of Hyperion (September 1819), we have thirty vital months comprising a span of development unparalleled in English literature. This dissertation focuses upon the central feature of that development— the evolution of the creative mind of the poet. I do not purpose another factual biography of Keats, but rather an exploration of the internal autobiography of the poet in self-genesis as this evolvement is impressed upon the symbolic structures of his works. In artistic vitality, incisiveness of thought, and individual sublimity, Keats achieved a ripeness …
F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller
F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller
Robert G. Fuller Publications
This Letter reports an investigation using pulsed electron irradiation to determine if the low efficiency of F-band coloration in calcium fluoride is caused by the instability of the F center. No transient F centers were seen in times as short as 2 x 10-7 sec. It is concluded that the inherent efficiency of F-band coloration in CaF2 is small compared with similar processes in alkali halides and a possible reason for this is discussed. Calcium fluoride has been extensively studied and is found to be more difficult to color than alkali halides and to have absorption …

Inelastic Collisions Of The Second Kind Between Electrons And Excited Mercury Atoms, Paul Burrow
Inelastic Collisions Of The Second Kind Between Electrons And Excited Mercury Atoms, Paul Burrow
Paul Burrow Publications
The relative cross section for inelastic collisions of the second kind between electrons and mercury atoms in the excited 3P1 state was measured as a function of electron energy. Excited atoms were produced by absorption of the 2537 Å resonance line from a mercury arc. A low-energy beam of electrons was produced using the retarding potential difference method. Scattered electrons which gained kinetic energy were detected by passing them through a potential barrier which reflected unscattered electrons. The data are in good agreement with the cross section computed by applying detailed balancing to the known cross section for …
Sociological Studies Of The Alpine Vegetation On Long Peak, Walter Kiener
Sociological Studies Of The Alpine Vegetation On Long Peak, Walter Kiener
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
General. On this continent no investigation is on record that had for its purpose the structural study of a whole unit complex of alpine vegetation. From Colorado several works are available that treat of the problem in part only. There was very little in the available literature on the biology, structure, and floristic composition of the complete vegetation when the writer, as a ranger for the United States National Park Service, was stationed for five summers on a ranger station located in the alpine zone facing Longs Peak. A desire to increase the knowledge of alpine vegetation led to this …

It shall be the purpose of this study to examine the new issues of industrial subordinated debentures in the period, 1955-1965, and seek to determine the prominent provisions of the subordinated debenture contract and if there have been any significant trends or changes in the contractual provisions during this period.
The sources of data used in this study were the new issues of industrial subordinated debentures issued by industrial firms during the period, 1955-1965, with these limitations: (1) The issues of subordinated debentures of United States corporations were obtained by a search throughout the 1965 issue of Moody’s Industrial Manual …
A Theorem On Repeating Decimals, William G. Leavitt
A Theorem On Repeating Decimals, William G. Leavitt
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
It is well known that a real number is rational if and only if its decimal expansion is a repeating decimal. For example, 2/7 = .285714285714 . . . . Many students also know that if n/m is a rational number reduced to lowest terms (that is, n and m relatively prime), then the number of repeated digits (we call this the length of period) depends only on m. Thus all fractions with denominator 7 have length of period 6. A sharp-eyed student may also notice that when the period (that is, the repeating digits) for 2/7 is split …

South Dakota Bird Notes, Keith E. Evans, Roger R. Kerbs
South Dakota Bird Notes, Keith E. Evans, Roger R. Kerbs
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Approximately 90,000 small stock ponds are scattered throughout South Dakota. The majority of these ponds are less than 10 acres in size, and depend entirely on surface runoff for their water supply. Although their primary purpose is to provide drinking water for livestock, many species of waterfowl and shorebirds use the pond areas for resting and feeding during spring and fall migrations, and for nesting habitat throughout the summer.
Neither the amount of use nor the potential for use by birds on stock ponds in South Dakota is known. Preliminary data presented here are results of waterfowl observations on 13 …

A Consideration Of Infraspecific Categories In The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801 (Cestoda: Taeniidae), Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) and E. multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, have been considered polytypic species, nine and three subspecies, respectively, having been recognized mainly on typological grounds. However, limits of taxonomically significant morphological and physiological variation have not been defined, nor do we know the degree to which such variation is influenced by species of host. With the probable exception of E. g. canadensis Cameron, 1960, the recognized subspecies of E. granulosus occur sympatrically with the nominate subspecies, E. g. granulosus, of European origin. Because there are no well-defined predator-prey relationships which would ensure their ecological isolation, seven of these …

First Classification Score And Length Of Herd Life, L. W. Specht, H. W. Carter, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The relationship of first score and length of life in the herd was measured in Holstein females two or three years of age at first classification. The regression of herd life (number of times classified) on the first over-all type score (nearly all values were between 65 and 90 points) was 1.7 months. Correlation between first classification score and herd life was approximately 0.2, indicating that less than 5% of the variation in herd life could be attributed to the relationship between first score and herd life.
Differences among herds accounted for about 10% of the total variance in overall …
