Distributional Changes And Interaction Between Prairie Chickens And Sharp-Tailed Grouse In The Midwest, Paul A. Johnsgard, Robert E. Wood
Distributional Changes And Interaction Between Prairie Chickens And Sharp-Tailed Grouse In The Midwest, Paul A. Johnsgard, Robert E. Wood
Papers in Ornithology
The "prairie grouse" of North America present an interesting example of the effects of human activities on breeding distribution patterns of birds, with resulting changes in geographic distribution and spacial isolation. Thus, the Heath Hen (Tympanuchus cupido cupido) was one of the most familiar birds to the early colonists, who relied heavily on it for food. Ultimately, loss of habitat caused the Heath Hen's extinction. When the vast tall-grass prairies west of the Appalachians were settled, Greater Prairie Chickens (T. c. pinnatus) were probably more plentiful, and greatly increased as woods were cleared and grain crops supplemented native grasses. With …
Giovanni Gabrieli’S Canzon In Echo Duodecimi Toni, Donna Kay Van Riper
Giovanni Gabrieli’S Canzon In Echo Duodecimi Toni, Donna Kay Van Riper
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This thesis is a study of the Canzon in Echo Duodecimi Toni (number twelve) by Giovanni Gabrieli, an early and lonely example of the use of the organ with instruments. While it is true that contemporaries of Gabrieli composed for organ and instruments, the organ remained strictly in its role as a continuo instrument. Gabrieli, however, was apparently thinking in terms of the organ as a solo instrument, an instrument which could serve as an adequate echo to the brass.
Recordings of the work are disappointing or non-existent. A string transcription of number eleven on an Angel label is romanticized, …
The Pecan Casebearer, Acrobasis Caaryae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Mockernut Hickory, Carya Tomentosa, Elvis A. Heinrichs
The Pecan Casebearer, Acrobasis Caaryae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Mockernut Hickory, Carya Tomentosa, Elvis A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The presence of an A. caryae (Grote) larva in the terminal portion petiole apparently prevents the three terminal leaflets from developing normally. Larvae were present in the petioles from early spring until May 29. Four hymenopterous parasites were reared.
Seasonal Lipid Content Of Bagworm Larvae, E. A. Heinrichs
Seasonal Lipid Content Of Bagworm Larvae, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
It is common knowledge to many who have attempted to control bagworms Thyridopteryx sp., that early instars are fairly easy to control, while later larval stages are less susceptible to insecticides. Studies of other insects (Bennett and Thomas 1963, Munson and Gottlieb 1953, Munson et al. 1954, Reier et al. 1953) have shown that as the lipid content increases, the susceptibility to insecticides (especially chlorinated hydrocarbons) decreases. To determine whether the lipid content of the bagworm larva increased with age a series of lipid extractions was conducted.
Electrical Conductivity Of Potassium Chloride, Robert Fuller, Michael H. Reilly, Charles L. Marquardt, John C. Wells
Electrical Conductivity Of Potassium Chloride, Robert Fuller, Michael H. Reilly, Charles L. Marquardt, John C. Wells
Robert G. Fuller Publications
The electrical conductivity of potassium chloride is discussed within the framework of a four-defect model of the crystal. The four defects are mobile anion and cation vacancies and immobile divalent cation impurities and divalent cation impurity-cation vacancy complexes. The Teltow formulation of the four-defect mode1 fails to describe precisely the measured electrical conductivity of KCl over the entire intrinsic and extrinsic range.
Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Differences between daughter-dam and paternal sib estimates of heritability of first lactation milk yield have not been explained for New York data. Deviations of first lactation records from herdmate means of 155,070 artificially sired Holsteins were analyzed to examine the effect of unequal within group variances on the paternal sib estimate of heritability. The statistical model used to describe the data was yy = μ + si + eiy with σ 2yi = σ 2s + = σ2ei. Estimates of the within sire-group variances, σ1 2ei, were heterogeneous (P …

Review Of Geography Of Religions By David E. Sopher, Robert Stoddard
Review Of Geography Of Religions By David E. Sopher, Robert Stoddard
Geography Program: Faculty Publications
This is the first book written in English dealing exclusively with the geography of religion. Consequently it contributes to the field of cultural geography by organizing some ideas and scattered publications dealing with the geography of religion into a single text. The major disappointment with this publication is the lack of consideration about several vital geographic questions. It is true that a small survey text cannot cover all aspects of the field, so some topics and previous studies may need to be omitted. Unfortunately the weakness of this book is not its size but its emphasis. Too many pages are …
Review Of Bhutan: A Physical And Cultural Geography By Pradyumna P. Karan., Robert Stoddard
Review Of Bhutan: A Physical And Cultural Geography By Pradyumna P. Karan., Robert Stoddard
Geography Program: Faculty Publications
This “preliminary geographical appraisal” of Bhutan is an important contribution to knowledge about an unfamiliar country. Part of the contribution results from information collected by Dr. Karan during recent expeditions. Some field data are presented in the form of new maps, including those of population distribution and important valleys. (An accompanying map with settlement features on a shaded-relief base appeared earlier as Map Supplement No. 5, A.A.G. Annals.) Also, the author's bibliography and assemblage of previously scattered materials will aid future studies of the Himalayan state.
Unfortunately the book will have limited value for many geographers. The numerous pictures, …
Floral Morphology And Phylogeny In The Hydrocharitaceae, Robert B. Kaul
Floral Morphology And Phylogeny In The Hydrocharitaceae, Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The vascular anatomy of 13 of the 15 genera of the Hydrocharitaceae has been studied, and certain aspects of floral morphology are considered. The flowers of the family show a broad range of specialized structures combined with primitive characteristics. The origin of paired and single stamens is interpreted as probable modifications of fascicled stamens. Extreme reduction in the androecium is shown for several genera. Tendencies toward reduction and fusion within the gynoecium are pronounced. Most genera are at least slightly syncarpous, but a few are apocarpous. The inferior ovary is appendicular in nature, with some genera exhibiting more complete fusion …

Projected Hartree Product Wavefunctions, Gordon A. Gallup
Projected Hartree Product Wavefunctions, Gordon A. Gallup
Gordon Gallup Publications
A method for performing a restricted configuration interaction calculation on atoms or molecules based on the use of Young operators from the symmetric groups is discussed and its relation to some other types of calculations is pointed out. The method in its most general form can be said to be an extension of the independent particle approach which represents the wavefunction in terms of the n best possible one-particle orbitals for the n-particle system. Illustrations are given for the hydrogen molecule, the helium atom, and the allyl radical. ©1968 American Institute of Physics

Differential Plant Injury And Yield Responses Of Tomato Varieties To 2,4-D, D. P. Coyne, O. C. Burnside
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Experiments reported in this bulletin were conducted to determine the extent of plant injury and yield loss due to high and low rates of 2,4-D sprays on a wide range of home garden and processing tomato varieties. Results of this study could be used as a basis for suggesting tomato varieties suitable for growing in areas where 2,4-D drift is a common problem. An experiment was also conducted to determine if there was resistance to or good recovery from 2,4-D injury in other tomato species and in a wide collection of tomato plant introductions.

Problems Of Epidemiological Geography (Report Viii): Structure Of A Zoonosis Nosoareal, I.I. Yelkin, V.K. Yaschkul
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The Main structural indices of a nosoareal are the focalress in the distribution of infectious diseases of man and their causative agents. The problem of the focalness of infections has been developed for quite a long time in the field of parasitology and is a very important division of contemporary epidemiology (Ye. N. The Chugwater is disconformably underlain by t];ie Goose Egg Formation (Permian) and unconformably overlain, from south to north, by the Sundance, Gypsum Spring, and Piper Formations of Jurassic Age.
The rocks of the Chugwater, in order of abundance, are: siltstone, sandstone, claystone, conglomerate, limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. Binocular microscope studies were …
The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
The courtship of ducks is unusual in several aspects. In temperate zones it generally begins very early, usually on the wintering grounds, so courtship is not a manifestation of territorial proclamation and defense as is the case with many songbirds. Nor, because of its early initiation, is courtship closely correlated with gonad growth and fertilization; rather, pair formation is normally completed prior to the period of maximum gonadal activity. Therefore, reproductive behavior in ducks may be conveniently divided into an early phase of conspicuous displays associated with actual pair formation, followed by the later and less elaborate behavior patterns concerned …
Floral Development And Vasculature In Hydrocleis Nymphoides (Butomaceae), Robert B. Kaul
Floral Development And Vasculature In Hydrocleis Nymphoides (Butomaceae), Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The flower of Hydrocleis nymphoides consists of three sepals which arise in spiral succession, three simultaneously arising petals, numerous stamens and staminodia which arise in centrifugal order, and six carpels. A residual apex remains at maturity. The first-formed members of the androecium are stamens and the later-formed members are staminodia which develop below the stamens and which become outwardly displaced during expansion of the receptacle. The androecium is supplied by branching vascular trunk bundles. The carpels are completely open but the ventral margins are slightly conduplicately appressed basally. A single dorsal bundle provides the stigmatic area with vascular tissue, and …
