Bird Movements In Relation To Control, Joseph L. Guarino
Bird Movements In Relation To Control, Joseph L. Guarino
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Ecological studies are being carried out by Denver Wildlife Research Center personnel on starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and blackbirds as part of a research program to alleviate damage by these species. The objectives are to determine the breeding and wintering areas, migratory routes, local movement patterns, and turnover rates of problem populations. Knowledge about the movement of problem birds is essential for determining those points in their daily and seasonal movement cycles where they are likely to be more vulnerable to control. Banding and marking programs are presently the primary means of gathering movement data. Since 1960, Denver personnel and cooperators …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
I'd like to open with a very brief discussion, then call on some selected people with whom I've corresponded earlier, and ask if they will discuss a particular aspect of this total bird problem. I've asked that they keep their comments from three to five minutes. Trying to break the total problem down into its several facets we came up with six arbitrary subtopics. For want of better terms I've called these: population census techniques, chemical repellants, sonic repellants, wetting agents, lethal control techni-ques, and damage evaluation. Your particular problem in your area may be slightly different than in other …
A Review Of Parental Carrying Of Young By Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard, Janet Kear
A Review Of Parental Carrying Of Young By Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard, Janet Kear
Papers in Ornithology
A review of literature reveals that published accounts of parental carrying among waterfowl are numerous and of diverse origins. Parental carrying on the back while swimming has been reliably seen in three species of swans, two sheldgeese, and at least seven species of ducks. Parental carrying of young in flight has also been reported for at least 16 species representing seven of the generally recognized waterfowl tribes. The majority of such accounts have involved carrying the young in the bill, a possibility that is somewhat substantiated by reliable observations of egg or eggshell carrying by females of several species. In …

The Nebraska Economy: Manpower And Economic Growth, Ronald A. Wykstra
The Nebraska Economy: Manpower And Economic Growth, Ronald A. Wykstra
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
The economic growth of states and regions in the American economy follows divergent patterns. During the period from 1910 to 1950, for example, the labor force in Nebraska grew at a slower rate than did the national labor force. Nebraska had over onequarter of a million fewer workers than would have been the case if growth in Nebraska had occurred at the national rate. More recently it has been observed that employment in Nebraska increased 25 percent from 1939 to 1958. This increase does not compare favorably with the nation as an employment "growth gap" (the difference in state and …

Mutation Induction In Melilotus Alba Annua By Chemical Mutagens, A. Kleinhofs, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Hydroxylamine (HA), 2-aminopurine (AP), 5-bromouracil (BU), and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) were tested for mutagenic activity on seeds of Melilotus alba annua. Mutants were classified into the following categories: o-hydroxycinnamic acid (o-HCA) content and β-glucosidase activity, chlorophyll deficiency, dwarf growth habit, and miscellaneous morphological variations. Due to difficulties in classification, the o-HCA and β-glucosidase category and the dwarf category were unreliable for determining mutation rates. Based on the chlorophyll-deficient and miscellaneous morphological categories, mutation rates for HA, AP, and BU treatments did not differ from the control rates, but EMS at 0.003M and 0.004M …
Water-Soluble Factors In Melilotus Leaves Which Influence Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz
Water-Soluble Factors In Melilotus Leaves Which Influence Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
One factor which stimulates feeding and two factors which deter feeding by the adult sweetclover weevil have been separated by preparative paper chromatography of hot water extracts of Melilotus leaves. The factors were detected with a bioassay which measures feeding by adult weevils on sweetclover root disks impregnated with the extract or fraction being tested. A feeding stimulant (Stimulant A) and a feeding deterrent (Deterrent A) were found in both the resistant species, M. infesta, and a susceptible species, M. officinalis, in approximately equal amounts. A second feeding deterrent (Deterrent B) was found only in extracts from M. …

Akeson et al. (1967) reported that the water-methanol phase of a water-methanol-chloroform extract, obtained from leaves of Melilotus officinalis L. Lam. (variety Goldtop), stimulated extensive feeding by the sweetclover weevil, Sitona cylindricollis (Fähreus), on bioassay disks prepared from sweetclover roots. Subsequent studies have shown that a hot-water extract will elicit a similar response. When disks were treated only with the solvent used in extraction, an almost negligible amount of feeding was obtained. Thus, leaves of Goldtop sweetclover apparently contain one or more water-soluble feeding stimulants. Beck (1965) defined a feeding stimulant as a a stimulus tending to promote continuous feeding. …

Relationship Between Protein And Ribonucleic Acid Synthesis During Outgrowth Of Spores Of Bacillus Cereus, S. Rodenberg, W. Steinberg, J. Piper, Kenneth W. Nickerson, J. Vary, R. Epstein, H.O. Halvorson
Papers in Microbiology
The rate of protein and ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis was examined during the outgrowth of spores of Bacillus cereus T in a chemically defined medium. RNA synthesis started 2.5 min after the initiation of germination, and protein synthesis after 4 min. Addition of a complete amino acid supplement and uracil supported high rates of RNA and protein synthesis throughout outgrowth. To determine the relationship between the rate of protein (k) and RNA synthesis, the kinetics of formation of various classes of RNA were followed during outgrowth. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) comprised a relatively constant fraction of the total RNA …
Measuring Milk Flow Of Dairy Cows, G. H. Schmidt, L. Dale Van Vleck
Measuring Milk Flow Of Dairy Cows, G. H. Schmidt, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Milk flow measurements on 124 cows were analyzed to determine how they are affected by vacuum level, pulsation rate, pulsation ratio of the milking machine, and the breed, age, stage of lactation, and milk yield of the cow. Average rate of flow prior to machine stripping, yield during the first minute, and yield during the first 2 rain of milking were highly correlated with maximum rate of milk flow. These measurements were significantly increased by days in milk, vacuum level, pulsation rate, pulsation ratio, and total yield. Age at calving had a slight effect on yield during the first minute …
Relative Selection Efficiency In Retrospect Of Selected Young Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck
Relative Selection Efficiency In Retrospect Of Selected Young Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The indexes used in retrospect in estimating one-half genetic value (daughter superiority) of progeny of 541 Holstein matings contracted by Eastern Artificial Insemination Cooperative were determined. A set of information on relatives to be complete would include records of paternal sisters, the dam, paternal sisters of the dam, maternal sisters, maternal grandam, and maternal sisters of the dam. The average index of daughter superiority for the 541 progeny was between 406 and 455 kg of milk, depending on which combination of relatives was used. Paternal sisters accounted for 45 to 50% of the total daughter superiority. Records of maternal relatives, …
Infrared Absorption Properties Of Lih, Lid Mixed Crystals, Sitaram S. Jaswal, John R. Hardy
Infrared Absorption Properties Of Lih, Lid Mixed Crystals, Sitaram S. Jaswal, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The normal modes of pure LiH and LiD, required in impurity mode calculations, have been computed on the basis of the deformation-dipole model. Neutron-scattering results of Verble, Warren, and Yarnell for Li7D, along with some other experimental quantities, have been used to determine the various parameters involved. It is found that the frequency spectrum of LiH has a gap and that a substitutional D- ion produces a local mode in this gap whose frequency has been computed, together with its amplitude at the impurity. The infrared absorption frequency associated with this local mode and its integrated absorption …

The Biology Of Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), A Pest Of Juniperus Species, E. A. Heinrichs, Hugh E. Thompson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Choristoneura houstonana (Grote) lays eggs singly in July. Egg development ranged from 8 to 11 days, with the majority hatching 10 days after oviposition. Larvae are solitary, and mine during early instars, but later instars feed externally on leaves in shelters made by webbing foliage together. There is one generation each year, and overwintering occurs in a hibernaculum, in mined leaves. Field-collected head-capsule width frequencies indicated nine larval instars. Rearing larvae on seedling junipers indoors indicated a range of 8–11 instars. Pupation occurs during June and July in the shelter where the larva feeds. The pupal stage lasted about 10 …

Formation Of Etchable Tracks In Dielectrics, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Formation Of Etchable Tracks In Dielectrics, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Robert Katz Publications
It is proposed that etchable damage is produced in dielectrics by energetic charged particles when a critical dosage of ionization energy is deposited at a critical distance from the ion's path by secondary electrons. Within the critical cylinder, molecular fragments more soluble than the parent molecule are formed. The radius of the critical cylinder is taken to be approximately 20 Å, as is appropriate to the passage of the etchant along the track and the diffusion of reaction products back to the surface. At the critical radius the dosage approximates doses producing bulk damage under γ irradiation. The proposed criterion …

Response Of Nai(T1) To Energetic Heavy Ions, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Robert Katz Publications
Experimental values of the relative heights of scintillation pulses generated in NaI(T1) crystals, by heavy ions (Z>5) of energy 1-10 MeV/amu, agree well with computed relative cross sections for photon production, from a theory based on the assumption of a one-hit response to the spatially distributed dose of ionization energy, and a characteristic dose of 4x107 erg/cm3 for this material Discrepancies between theory and experiment for He bombardments arise from the theoretical neglect of the nonlinear dose variation over the sensitive volume surrounding each TI atom. Similar discrepancies arising from the neglect of molecular volume occur …
Width Of Heavy-Ion Tracks In Emulsion, E. J. Kobetich, Robert Katz
Width Of Heavy-Ion Tracks In Emulsion, E. J. Kobetich, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Profiles of the solid core of long, flat, ending tracks of heavy primary cosmic rays in Ilford G-5 emulsion have been measured by manually tracing their enlarged (3500X) photographic image. These measurements agree well in the ending 3000 μ of residual range (β <0.3) with a reformulated theory of track width based on computation of the spatial distribution of ionization energy. The measured core width in G-5 emulsion is the sum of the sensitized cylinder diameter, at which 6000 erg/cm3 of ionization energy is deposited by δ rays, and the diameter of a developed grain.

Possible Trivacancy Contribution To Ionic Conductivity, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly
Possible Trivacancy Contribution To Ionic Conductivity, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly
Robert G. Fuller Publications
Fuller and Reilly [1], Fuller, Reilly, Marquardt and Wells [2], and Allnatt and Pantelis [3] have recently reported the results of measurements of the intrinsic electrical conductivity σ of RbCl, KCl and NaCl, respectively. All of these results showed an anomalous behavior of the log (σT) vs. T-1 plot at temperatures near the melting points of the various crystals. It is the purpose of this note to discuss the suggestion [4] that the anomaly may be due to a trivacancy mechanism. The plots of the log (σT) vs. T –1 were found to have too …
