Axenic Ovarial Explants From The Marine Nematode Deontostoma Californicum On Culture Media, D. R. Viglierchio, Armand R. Maggenti, R. N. Johnson
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The gonads of Deontostoma californicum were isolated from the organismal environment by dissection. In an attempt to approximate the in vivo condition and to maintain in vitro architecture and function ten media recommended for the culture of insect cells or organs were tested. The media were prepared in two series: one according to published recommendations and the second substituting filtered seawater for the inorganic salts and distilled water. Media were prepared as both liquid and gel (agar) with and without antibiotics. Whole animals and eggs were placed on the same culture media series as the ovarial explants. Ovarial explant reaction …
Systems Analysis Of Natural Resources And Crop Production, Marion Clawson
Systems Analysis Of Natural Resources And Crop Production, Marion Clawson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Human history is a seamless web; every event has its antecedents, its contemporaries, and its consequences. Each event arises out of the past, each is associated with other events at the time, and each leads to new events, in an endless chain. Indeed, there is difficulty in isolating any single event; when did it begin, what are its boundaries, when did it end? These are some of the problems of the social scientist generally, and of the historian in particular.
Nature is equally a seamless web. Every natural process or event has its cause or antecedent, each takes place within …

Predicted Versus Measured Production Differences Using Summer Air Conditioning For Lactating Dairy Cows, Leroy Hahn
Predicted Versus Measured Production Differences Using Summer Air Conditioning For Lactating Dairy Cows, Leroy Hahn
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Predicted summer production losses were made for Holstein cows in three widely separated locations in the United States where field investigations of air conditioning for dairy barns have been completed. These losses, based on a functional relationship developed from Missouri Climatic Laboratory data and local climatological data, were compared to the measured losses at each location. Correlation of losses for Holstein cows varied from excellent in northern Ohio to good in southern Louisiana and central Missouri. Variations due to hotter- or cooler-than-normal summer seasons and level of production were reasonable at all locations.
Life Insurance Prices, Joseph M. Belth
Life Insurance Prices, Joseph M. Belth
Nebraska Law Review
Life insurance textbooks refer only briefly to the subject of price competition, and even some of these references contain statements that are inconsistent in certain respects. On the one hand, in discussions of regulation, the statement is sometimes made that life insurance rates generally are not regulated and that competition is felt to be a sufficient protection against excessive rates. On the other hand, in discussions of differences among insurance carriers, the statement is sometimes made that price comparisons in life insurance are sufficiently complex to be well beyond comprehension for the layman. Taken together, such statements raise an important …

Protection For Citizen Complaints To Public Authorities—Prohibition Of Retaliatory Evictions: The Case Of Edwards V. Habib, Neil B. Danberg
Protection For Citizen Complaints To Public Authorities—Prohibition Of Retaliatory Evictions: The Case Of Edwards V. Habib, Neil B. Danberg
Nebraska Law Review
Edwards v. Habib is a recent decision from the United States Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit, which allows tenants in month-to-month tenancies a defense against summary dispossess actions. Where the tenant had complained to local authorities that his dwelling did not meet the minimal housing standards in that jurisdiction, a landlord had been able to punish the complaining tenant through eviction. The tenant in the District of Columbia after Edwards is now permitted to assert as a defense to eviction the illegal retaliatory purpose of the landlord. The decision is an important judicial attempt to bring landlord-tenant law …
Life Insurance Funding Of Stock Purchase Agreements, Arthur J. Wojta
Life Insurance Funding Of Stock Purchase Agreements, Arthur J. Wojta
Nebraska Law Review
The insurance funded stock purchase agreement is often a vital part of any plan for continued business success. It also can be an essential part of a family's estate plan. The shareholders usually agree that death is a major uncertainty, and that they intend to remain active in the business as long as possible. Funding the purchase agreement is almost a necessity and life insurance admirably takes care of the major uncertainty, the premature death. Properly arranged, the insurance funded stock purchase agreement adds planning certainty where none previously existed.

Nebraska Law Review
The Nebraska Law Review is pleased to introduce in this issue a section devoted exclusively to recent decisions of the Nebraska Supreme Court. This section, to be published on an annual basis, will contain a critical discussion of recent decisions which the Nebraska Law Review believes are either cases of first impression in our court or rulings which substantially alter previous case law in Nebraska. The purpose of the Nebraska section is (1) to provide attorneys in Nebraska and elsewhere with a comprehensive study of the holdings of selected cases and an analysis of how these decisions relate to previous …
Legal Aspects Of The Fair Trial–Free Press Controversy: The Reardon Report Considered, M. Douglas Deitchler, Howard Fredrick Hahn
Legal Aspects Of The Fair Trial–Free Press Controversy: The Reardon Report Considered, M. Douglas Deitchler, Howard Fredrick Hahn
Nebraska Law Review
The approved draft of Standards Relating to Fair Trial and Free Press, generally referred to as the Reardon Report, is the organized bar's response to the necessity for guaranteeing a fair trial while still allowing as much publicity as is possible. The standards promulgated are merely recommendations which the eleven-member drafting committee has proposed for adoption by the appropriate authorities in the various jurisdictions. If not so adopted they will in no way affect the particular jurisdiction. However, having the prestige of the American Bar Association House of Delegates behind it, the Reardon Report bears analysis, as its …
Eminent Domain: Valuation Of Different Real Property Interests In Nebraska, John C. Person
Eminent Domain: Valuation Of Different Real Property Interests In Nebraska, John C. Person
Nebraska Law Review
Under the laws of Nebraska, prior to the passage of the Nebraska Uniform Eminent Domain Act in 1951, each body that had been delegated the power of eminent domain had a specific set of statutes setting out the procedure it was to follow in condemnation proceedings. The language of the various statutes differed, and the procedure was not uniform. To a large extent, the enactment of 19513 remedied these differences; however, a current controversy remains concerning the duties of court appointed appraisers when valuing property in which several people have an interest. Nebraska is currently confronted with the problem of …
The Nebraska Judicial Article: A Time For Reform, Thomas D. Sutherland
The Nebraska Judicial Article: A Time For Reform, Thomas D. Sutherland
Nebraska Law Review
The purpose of this Comment is to examine further a proposal for complete court reform in Nebraska put forth in an article entitled The Justice of the Peace in Nebraska, and to study some of the advantages of a unified court system. Such a court system would vest the judicial power of the state in one court of justice, rather than in several autonomous courts. However, this one court would be divided into courts of different levels under one administrative head. The problem is approached in two ways, which will first indicate the need for some kind of reform, …
Review De Novo In Alimony And Property Settlement: Is It Desirable?, William L. Mccown
Review De Novo In Alimony And Property Settlement: Is It Desirable?, William L. Mccown
Nebraska Law Review
This Comment attempts to analyze the practical effects of review de novo in one category of divorce cases: those involving alimony and property settlement. To accomplish this task, it is necessary to examine Nebraska's substantive rules for determining alimony and rendering property settlements, which is followed by an exploration of the historical basis for review de novo, with particular attention to its development in Nebraska. There is then an analysis of review de novo in alimony and property settlement cases, and some of the issues are discussed. Finally, some procedural recommendations are posited with the goal of improving appellate review …
Life Insurance As A Personal Savings Vehicle, Vane B. Lucas
Life Insurance As A Personal Savings Vehicle, Vane B. Lucas
Nebraska Law Review
Through the medium of life insurance, millions of individuals have accumulated savings while providing protection for their families. Insurance companies have pooled these savings and injected them back into the financial bloodstream of the economy. This pool of investment funds has helped to achieve increasingly greater productivity and has raised the standard of living in our society. This article seeks to explain how life insurance functions as a vehicle for personal savings. The protection element of life insurance is related to the level premium concept of funding insurance. The savings element of life insurance is then discussed and related to …

From The Editors
Nebraska Law Review
It has been said that the legal profession as it exists in Nebraska is irrelevant to the real problems and needs of our society. The editors are not entirely in agreement with that statement, for it is through the practice of law, as it exists, that the needed changes and reforms must come about. However, before the long-range objectives can be obtained, indeed, before they can even be subjected to attack, the short-range goals demand attention. Only if the attorney is well trained can he hope to contend with the dimensions of today's problems in our complex society. Only if …
Nebraska Jails: Cure Or Cause?, David R. Parker
Nebraska Jails: Cure Or Cause?, David R. Parker
Nebraska Law Review
An inquiry into Nebraska's jails is warranted and long overdue. To analyze the jail systems in the state, it is necessary to study the legal basis of the jail system as contained in the laws, how that system operates today, what about the system gives rise to concern, and what can be done to improve the system. Throughout the analysis, a comparison to national statistics is meaningful to determine if the comments and recommendations of national and federal authorities are relevant in Nebraska.

Detection Of Vibrationally Excited N2 By Superelastic Electron Impact, Paul Burrow, Paul Davidovits
Detection Of Vibrationally Excited N2 By Superelastic Electron Impact, Paul Burrow, Paul Davidovits
Paul Burrow Publications
We have observed electrons scattered superelastically from nitrogen molecules vibrationally excited by quenching collisions with optically excited rubidium atoms. Analysis of the energy gained by the electrons shows that in more than 10% of the quenching collisions the highest energetically allowed vibrational state of N2, v=5, is populated. The relative superelastic cross section for collisions between molecules in this state and electrons is measured and compared with that predicted by detailed balance.
Controlled Water Releases To Improve Sauger Spawning Below Fort Randall Dam, Charles H. Wahlburg
Controlled Water Releases To Improve Sauger Spawning Below Fort Randall Dam, Charles H. Wahlburg
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Studies by the North Central Reservoir Investigations show that good reproduction by Lewis and Clark Lake sauger is dependent on minimum water level change on spawning grounds. Sauger spawn 7 miles below Fort Randall Dam over a 4-mi1e long gravel, rubble, boulder shoreline. Spawning begins when water temperatures at the dam reach 42 F. This usually occurs during the latter part of April or early May. Sauger spawn along the shoreline in 1 to 2 ft of water from about 8:00 PM to 12:00 Midnight. Fertilized eggs sink to the bottom and adhere to gravel ~ rubble, and boulders. Most …
Ionic Transport In Potassium Chloride, Robert Fuller, Charles L. Marquardt, Michael H. Reilly, John C. Wells Jr.
Ionic Transport In Potassium Chloride, Robert Fuller, Charles L. Marquardt, Michael H. Reilly, John C. Wells Jr.
Robert G. Fuller Publications
The electrical conductivity and chlorine ion diffusion in KC1 and KCl:SrC12 single crystals have been analyzed by least-squares methods, using as a model a perfect crystal perturbed by five defects: isolated anion vacancies, isolated cation vacancies, divalent cation impurities, divalent cation-impurity-cation-vacancy complexes, and vacancy pairs. The transport equations were derived from this five-defect model using a simple theory for noninteracting particles, except for the nearest-neighbor binding to form complexes and vacancy pairs, and using the same theory including long-range Coulomb interactions between the isolated defects. This latter theory yielded the better description of the experimental results. However, the analyses …

Distribution Of The Porcupine, Erethizon Dorsatum, In Mexico, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The first Recent record of the porcupine, Erethizon dorsatum, from Mexico comprised fragmentary remains associated with human occupancy from a cave east of Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila (Gilmore, 1947: 158-159). Later, Benson (1953 : 511-512) reported two specimens from western Sonora from < the lower flood plain of the Rio Sonora, close to the Gulf of California >> (one from 6 miles N Puerto Kino and the other from Rancho Santa Ana, about 45 miles W Hermosillo), and Dickerman (1962: 108) recorded the species from Hda. Las Margaritas in northern Coahuila. No additional reports of Recent porcupines from Mexico have come to our attention, and four specimens of Erethizon dorsatum couesi Mearns, 1897, in the Museum …

A Population Analysis Of Juniperus In The Missouri River Basin: Taxonomic Interrelationships Between Juniperus Scopulorum Sarg. And J. Virginiana L. In Missouri River Basin, David F. Van Haverbeke
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Juniper has been used since early pioneer days in the protective tree plantings established on the windswept Great Plains. More recently juniper has been used as a basic component of the shelter belt plantings which, by the thousands, dot the prairies of the Great Plains from Texas to Canada. Research to improve the quality of Plains tree planting materials, including Juniperus) is proposed or is now in progress.
In the fall of 1965, 72 native stands of Juniperus were sampled throughout the Missouri River Basin-an area encompassing most of the Central and Northern Great Plains. The purpose was to determine …

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
The recent comprehensive review of Maccoa Duck Oxyura maccoa biology by Clark (1964) has provlded the first detailed summary of the species' reproductive behaviour patterns and other aspects of breeding in this little-studied stiff-tail. It has been evident that the evolutionary relationships of the Maccoa Duck to the other southern hemisphere stiff-tails and the northern species of Oxyura are still uncertain at best, as evidenced by the varied taxonomic treatment that the Maccoa has received from Delacour and Mayr (1945), who regarded it as a race of O. australis, from Boetticher (1952), who consldered it as a race of O. …
