Metabolic Pathways Of Malate Enantiomers, Charles P. Anderson, Stanley Dagley, David Hopper
Metabolic Pathways Of Malate Enantiomers, Charles P. Anderson, Stanley Dagley, David Hopper
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A strain of Pseudomonas non-fluorescens has shown to metabolize certain phenolic compounds through a pathway containing D-malic acid. This same bacterium is able to oxidize D-malate slowly when it is used as the sole carbon source, but is unable to grow on it. Possible pathways and explanations of this phenomena are postulated.
In recent years the metabolism of malate enantiomers in various species of Pseudomonas has been the subject of considerable investigation. This results from the fact that the microbial metabolism of the dihydroxphenol, gentisic acid, has been shown to include D-malate in the metabolic chain (Hopper, Chapman, and Dagley, …
Some Thoughts On The Philosophy Of The Future And Its Role In Planning, D. F. Costello
Some Thoughts On The Philosophy Of The Future And Its Role In Planning, D. F. Costello
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Federal, state and local administrative units, both governmental and educational, spend between ten and thirty percent of their time in planning. By its very nature, this planning implies a concern for the future. Many administrators involved find themselves facing the problem of estimating the effect of technological chance and future scientific advances on their administrative entities. Recent space activities, the magic sound of the date 2000 and the woeful predictions of modern soothsayers have heightened the administrators anxiety levels concerning his ability to plan for the changes that will inevitably come. There are some, of course, who see their appointed …
Religio-Scientific Relationships In The Twentieth And The Thirteenth Centuries, Nicholas Dietz Jr.
Religio-Scientific Relationships In The Twentieth And The Thirteenth Centuries, Nicholas Dietz Jr.
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Our whole planet became conscious of a religio-scientific relationship during the moon-orbiting Apollo 8 flight, at Christmas, 1968. Its astronauts were the first men to leave the gravitation of Earth, the first to come under another gravitational body, the first to travel so far from Earth (233,000 miles), the first to see the other side of the moon. Contemplation of the scientific and technical achievements of their Mission against a new background of the incredibly immense Universe and the wonders of its creation, led them to depart from flight plan to re-read to planet Earth from outer space the Genesis …
Power Requirements Of Indoor Model Aircraft Having Tandem Lifting Surfaces, Walter Erbach
Power Requirements Of Indoor Model Aircraft Having Tandem Lifting Surfaces, Walter Erbach
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The indoor model is a free-flying rubber-powered model aircraft designed to achieve maximum flight duration through light construction and proper aerodynamic configuration. So fragile it can be flown only indoors, a world competition model weighs approximately one gram, is powered by a motor of equivalent weight, and under ideal conditions in sufficiently large halls is capable of single-flight durations exceeding forty-five minutes. World competition regulations established by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale restrict only wing span, thus design problems arise from a different direction from those of man-carrying aircraft. With the wing planform largely determined by the given span, the designer …
Seriation Of Certain Arikara Villages, J.J. Hoffman
Seriation Of Certain Arikara Villages, J.J. Hoffman
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Selected villages of 18th century Arikara Indians are seriated on the basis of presumably sensitive pottery traits. Two agreeing temporal models, one statistical and one graphical, are derived from the manipulated data. The statistical model is further abstracted to present a relative temporal placement of the individual villages. The models and their interpretations differ somewhat from previous work on the subject. Certain ideas regarding modification of the techniques employed are discussed. A few thoughts are also injected regarding the use of temporal models, seriation, and statistics in general for the interpretation of past behavior.

History Of Genetic Counseling, Anne J. Krush
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Genetic counseling is an integral part of the physicia'l1's management of patients with presumptive or confirmed hereditary diseases. It is an art and science involving not only the use of technical genetic knowledge and precise medical diagnosis, but also accurate dissemination of genetic information in a tactful, empathetic manner. For optimum success the physician may request services from a variety of paramedical resources to insure maximum assistance for the counselee and his family in coping with a genetic problem.
Medical genetic knowledge has been accrued from many branches of genetics: population genetics, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, immunogenetics, etc. Increased knowledge concerning …

The S(Q,T) Summability Transform, Stanley D. Luke
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
I. Introduction. Robert E. Powell [7] has introduced a matrix of Summability which is a .,generalization of the Taylor or T(r) method. He studies this special class of Summability matrices, related to the Laguerre polynomials in the following way. For complex rand t, denote by L(r,t) the matrix whose elements are an ,k = 0 when k < n,
And
an,k = (1-r)n+1 exp (tr/1-r) Lnk-n (t) rk-n when k≥n
Lnj (t) being the Laguerre polynomial of degree j, given by
Lnj (t) = Ʃ j (j+n)/(j-n) (-t) i/i!

Use Of Mushrooms In The Biology Laboratory, Philip J. Arnholt
Use Of Mushrooms In The Biology Laboratory, Philip J. Arnholt
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Students in high school and college biology courses are easily motivated if they are presented with the proper materials. Obtaining and organizing these materials is the problem of the teacher. This can be quite a task for a teacher who has five or six sections of 20-30 students every day. Materials which can command the interest of the student and are easily prepared are, therefore, very desirable.
I have found both high school and college students in biology and botany to be intensely interested in mushrooms if the material is presented properly. Unfortunately, most high school and college laboratory manuals …
Selection Of Plant Location To Minimize Total Shipping And Labor Costs, William L. Brogan, Jose Inguanzo
Selection Of Plant Location To Minimize Total Shipping And Labor Costs, William L. Brogan, Jose Inguanzo
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A method is presented for determining the optimal geographical location for a plant engaged in a specified manufacturing activity. The manufacturing activity is defined as the conversion of several raw material and sub-assemblies into a finished product. The optimal plant location is defined as the one which minimizes costs of shipping raw materials from various optional sources to the plant, the cost of shipping the finished product to specified markets, and the cost of labor involved in the assembly process. The method of solution is described, as is the computer program for implementing the method. Some illustrative examples are also …

Prescriptions: "Fifty Years In The Past, And Those Of Today, A Comparison.", Leonard Buchalter
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
More than one hundred prescription files dating from 1916 to 1939 were discovered in the basement of the old Creighton University Pharmacy and Medical Schools previously located at 14th & Davenport Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. An analysis of a group of these prescriptions written in the years 1918 to 1919 was made. Special emphasis has been placed on ingredients, manner in which prescriptions were written, special dose forms, and pharmaceutical processing. The prescriptions written fifty years ago were compared to those written today, and observations were made relating to the comparison.
The Creighton University Medical and Pharmacy Schools were located …
Thermal, Turbidity, And Ph Conditions Of The Upper White River: Sioux And Dawes Counties, Nebraska., Steve Cassells
Thermal, Turbidity, And Ph Conditions Of The Upper White River: Sioux And Dawes Counties, Nebraska., Steve Cassells
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Research indicates inverse correlations between pH and turbidity when the sediment is primarily of an organic nature. Siliceous sediment does not follow the same curve. Definite influences of cultivated lands on water turbidity are shown in the lower portion of the study area. Temperatures vary considerably within short distances, with the cause only speculative at this time. The study gives basis for the inferences on preferred habitats of trout and catfish.

Multi-Interval Sturm-Liouville Transform And Its Applications, Pau-Chang Lu
Multi-Interval Sturm-Liouville Transform And Its Applications, Pau-Chang Lu
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The method of finite integral transforms (Eringen, 1954; Churchill, 1955; Sneddon, 1955; Cinelli, 1965; Roettinger, 1947) has gradually replaced the classical method of separation of variables. This is undoubtedly due to its compact and almost drill-like formalism. Wherever applicable, it has also replaced the Laplace transform with the resulting avoidance of cumbersome contour integrals in the inversion.
In this paper, we are concerned with solving, by such a transformational or operational method, the following general boundary-value problem:
Li (fi) + M (fi) = gi (x), Ci-l

Notes On The Deciduous And Permanent Dentition Of The Hyracodonts, Lloyd G. Tanner, Larry D. Martin
Notes On The Deciduous And Permanent Dentition Of The Hyracodonts, Lloyd G. Tanner, Larry D. Martin
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Study of radiographs and dissections prepared from nearly fifty Hyracodon jaws in the collections of the University of Nebraska State Museum have demonstrated the normal presence of the lower premolar one in immature jaws of this genus. This tooth is functional in the young animal but is lost with the deciduous dentition and is not replaced. In the upper dental series permanent premolar one was preceded by a deciduous premolar one, which is also characteristic of the tapirs, but is unusual in the other perissodactyla.
INTRODUCTION
The milk dentition of the Hyracodontinae is unique in several respects from the teeth …
Physiological Cost Of Industrial Work, Gregory L. Dickey, Morris H. Schneider, Stephen H. Wimmer
Physiological Cost Of Industrial Work, Gregory L. Dickey, Morris H. Schneider, Stephen H. Wimmer
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of various mechanical work loads on ventilation rate and heart rate, under duplicate work conditions. The task was to crank a six inch radius crank at 60 RPM against torques of O, 16, 32.1, 48 and 64.2 inch pounds equivalent to work loads of 0, 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 ft. lb/min, respectively.
Introduction
During the past few years more research efforts have been expanded in an attempt to measure the amount of energy consumed (physiological cost) by an individual performing physical work. The energy that a person consumes can be divided …
Time, Space, And Climate In The Middle Missouri, John E. Ehrenhard
Time, Space, And Climate In The Middle Missouri, John E. Ehrenhard
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
It has been postulated that some cultural movements or conditions may be correlated with climatic episodes. One area where such correlations can be attempted lies in the Dakotas along the Missouri River mainstem where there is an apparent correspondence between dates of certain widespread climatic events and sequential episodes of native cultural history. During the period ranging from A.D. 700-1200 and from A.D. 1300 on into the nineteenth century significant changes of a climatic nature may have affected Indian societies.
The correlation of some climatic episodes or conditions with cultural movements is being attempted in an area of the Dakotas …
The Mechanism Of Secretion Of Fluid And Electrolytes In Salivary Glands, R. P. Suddick, F. J. Dowd, I.L. Shannon
The Mechanism Of Secretion Of Fluid And Electrolytes In Salivary Glands, R. P. Suddick, F. J. Dowd, I.L. Shannon
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
It has been realized since Ludwig's original studies that the mechanisms which underlay the secretion of saliva involve some type of active process in the gland (Ludwig et al., 1851). It was demonstrated in those early experiments that the submaxillary ductal pressure in dogs will rise above arterial pressure when the duct is occluded during active secretion. Since then, experiments carried out in a wide range of epithelial tissues which are capable of transcellular transfer of large volumes of fluid and electrolytes (e.g., frog skin, toad bladder, gall bladder, small intestine, etc.) have provided ample evidence that water transport …
Use Of Hydropterldales In Teaching Botany, Dale D. Sutton, Robert C. Lommasson
Use Of Hydropterldales In Teaching Botany, Dale D. Sutton, Robert C. Lommasson
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In most instances the Hydropteridales receive little if any attention in the high school biology class or general botany class at the college level. Information regarding these plants may even be rather sketchy in the college level morphology class and morphology text books. Special emphasis should be used in studying this group because they illustrate the following points. Their general morphology is unique in many respects and their habitat is unusual among the ferns. These plants are very good for illustrating the relation between physiology and morphology. The sporocarps produced in this group are unique among all plants. Because of …

Field Tests Of Insecticides Against Plagiotrochus Cornigerus, E. E. Burgess, H. E. Williams, R. E. Wilkinson, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Pin oaks, Quercus palustris Muenchhausen, are one of the important shade trees in west Tennessee. The horned oak-gall wasp, Plagiotrochus cornigerus Osten Sacken, causes a deformation of the twigs and leaves of the tree. In 1965, K. E. Stewart, an entomologist at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, injected pin oaks with systemic insecticides to evaluate their effectiveness in controlling the leaf gall and the stem gall caused by the horned oak-gall wasp. He found oxydemeton-methyl ec at a rate of 25 g AI/in. diameter and technical demeton at a rate of 3 g AI/in. diameter were the best materials …
