Ecological Significance Of Vegetation To Northern Pike, Esox Lucius, Spawning, D. B. Mccarraher, Robert E. Thomas

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Since 1955, information has been collected from six Nebraska sandhill lakes to evaluate northern pike spawning success based on type of aquatic vegetation preferred by pike for spawning. The lakes, all located in Cherry County, were Big Alkali, Watts, Hackberry, Cottonwood, Shell, and Pelican. Several investigators have commented that pike year class strength is closely related to type and abundance of aquatic vegetation present in a lake (Clark and Steinbach, 1959; Forney, 1967). Documented information on spawning habitats is scant other than vague references to pike spawning over submerged vegetation or inundated meadows.

Some forty years ago, the concept of habitat interspersion was advanced by Aldo Leopold (1931). Indicating then that "we are only on the threshold of an understanding of the ecology of game species," Leopold went on to postulate his law of interspersion which recognized that “game is a phenomenon of edges.” Although the validity of Leopold's premises has been documented both directly and indirectly many times in the past four decades, the complexity and frustration in describing ecological diversity of game range has continued to pose a problem for wildlife managers since 1931.

The genus Blarina (Mammalia: Soricidae) is represented in Nebraska by two well-differentiated, geographically exclusive phena that generally have been regarded as subspecies. Field studies conducted along their zone of contact resulted in the collection of representatives of both phena at each of five localities. Cluster analysis of distance matrix readily separated reference samples of the phena as well as test samples from near the zone of contact. A three-dimensional projection of the specimens onto their first three principal components, together with a discriminant function analysis, served further to elucidate the degree of differentiation among the phena and to confirm that …

Late Quaternary Eustatic Sea-Level Changes Along The Malibu Coast, Los Angeles County, California, Peter W. Birkeland

Late Quaternary relative sea-level changes along the Malibu coast can be deciphered by study of geomorphic features and marine and associated stream deposits. Evidence for such changes includes (a) stream downcutting in large valleys during low stands of sea level, (b) stream aggradation in the same valleys during high stands of sea level, and (c) marine shoreline angles whose altitudes coincide with the tops of valley-fill stream deposits. Sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) contains a soluble enzyme which oxidizes phenylpyruvate with the addition of either a natural cofactor or Mn²⁺ and dichlorophenol. The final product of oxidation has not been identified. Phenylpyruvate oxidation is catalyzed also by horseradish peroxidase, and the oxidation is enhanced by the natural cofactor from sweetclover or Mn²⁺ and dichlorophenol. After fractionation of sweetclover homogenates by DEAE-cellulose chromatography, two peaks of peroxidase activity (pyrogallol as substrate) are apparent; both peaks also oxidize phenylpyruvate. A third peak, specific for phenylpyruvate oxidation, also is apparent. The Cu/cu and B/b allelic pairs, which influence phenolic …
