Importance Of Different Levels Of Potassium In The Diet On Whole-Body 40K Count And Muscle And Blood Potassium , R. K. Johnson, L. E. Walters, J. V. Whiteman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The influence of three levels (1.31, 1.03 T and 0.29% K) of dietary potassium on 40K count, blood serum and muscle tissue potassium was determined using 36 crossbred Angus-Hereford steers. A balanced 3 x 3 latin square experimental design was utilized which allowed estimates of carry-over effects of diets to be evaluated. Diets were fed for 2-week periods and appropriate samples and measurements were collected at 14-day intervals over a 60-day period. Measurements were made on steers unshrunk and after 24 hr. off feed and water.

Carry-over effect means were nonsignificant for each trait. The steers on the high …

Missouri River Hydrology (Streamflow And Temperature) – Sioux City, Iowa To Rulo, Nebraska, David L. Schreiber

United States Department of Energy: Publications

In any plan for the development of water and land resources, hydrology must be a basic consideration. Because of the Missouri River Basin's large size and the many associated variations in hydrologic characteristics, hydrology is of special significance.
The Missouri River drains an area of approximately 530,000 square miles, and it is the longest river in the United States (2,315 miles). The source of the Missouri River is the headwaters of the Red Rock River in Montana, and the mouth is at the Mississippi River near St. Louis, Missouri. Part or all of 10 states and 9,700 square miles in …

A Gastric Battery For Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris Oct 1972

A Gastric Battery For Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

We previously described, in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society (1965), vol. 94, p. 193-194 “A device for holding objects in the stomachs of fish," consisting of a 1/16-inch plastic rod formed to loop around the isthmus and extend down the gullet into the stomach. This harness was developed to secure an experimental gastric battery, not reported at that time. The battery was intended to power an ultrasonic tracking transmitter.

After 20-day trials of seven combinations of metals in an electrolytic solution of 0.5 percent hydrochloric acid, we chose gold and cadmium for the battery plates on the basis of …

Winter Wheat Cultivar Performance In An International Array Of Environments, J. E. Stroike, V. A. Johnson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery organized in 1968 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State, has presented a unique opportunity to measure the performance and stability of 28 winter wheat cultivars over an international array of environments. Computations of three parameters for yield, selected agronomic traits, and grain protein and lysine were made from nursery data recorded in 1969 and 1970.

Nebraska Tractor Test 1110 John Deere 4430 Quad -Range Diesel, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab Oct 1972

Nebraska Tractor Test 1110 John Deere 4430 Quad -Range Diesel, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All lest result s were determined from observed data obtained in accordance with SAE and ASAE test code or official Nebraska test procedure. First and second gears were not run as it was necessary to limit the pull in third gear to avoid excessive slippage. Fourth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth , fifteenth and sixteenth gears were not run as test procedure requires only six travel speeds. During maximum drawbar run in 3rd gear the transmission came out of gear twice making it necessary to hold the shift lever in place to complete the run.

Herpetomonas Megaseliae Sp. N. (Protozoa: Trypanosomatidae) From Megaselia Scalaris (Loew, 1866) Schmitz, 1929 (Diptera: Phoridae), Pierre M. Daggett, John J. Janovy Jr., Norman R. Dollahon Oct 1972

Herpetomonas Megaseliae Sp. N. (Protozoa: Trypanosomatidae) From Megaselia Scalaris (Loew, 1866) Schmitz, 1929 (Diptera: Phoridae), Pierre M. Daggett, John J. Janovy Jr., Norman R. Dollahon

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

A new intestinal trypanosomatid was found parasitizing Megaselia scalaris. Forms with posterior kinetoplasts occurred in both natural infections and cloned cultures, but not in experimental infections. Average size and morphological variation were reduced in experimental infections with cloned stocks, compared to natural infections. A growth comparison was made between Herpetomonas muscarum and H. megaseliae. Differences in day of peak population, maximum numbers, and total time of survival were observed in culture. Attempts to infect Drosophila melanogaster with H. megaseliae were unsuccessful.

Observation Of Excitons In A Molecular Liquid: Specular Reflection Spectrum Of Α -Methylnaphthalene, Craig J. Eckhardt, Leo F. Nichols Oct 1972

Observation Of Excitons In A Molecular Liquid: Specular Reflection Spectrum Of Α -Methylnaphthalene, Craig J. Eckhardt, Leo F. Nichols

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

The normal-incidence specular-reflection spectrum of liquid α-methylnaphthalene was obtained for the wavelength region from 215 to 400 nm. Comparison of the Kramers-Kronig transform of the reflection spectrum with the absorption spectrum of α-methylnaphthalene is cyclohexane shows the bands of the neat-liquid spectrum shift to lower energy and display significant broadening. These effects support the existence of excitons in molecular liquids.

Observations On Some Natural-Focal Zoonoses In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch Oct 1972

Observations On Some Natural-Focal Zoonoses In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In Alaska, as in arctic and subarctic Eurasia, important natural-focal zoonoses are rabies, brucellosis, tularemia, trichinosis, alveolar hydatid disease, cystic hydatid disease, and diphyllobothriasis. Most frequently affected are aboriginal peoples in villages within biocenoses that include the natural parasite-host assemblages. Pathogens are transmitted to man from wild animals and from dogs, which are important as synanthropic hosts. The prevalence and rate of transmission of certain pathogens in natural foci are related to the numerical density of small mammals, especially rodents, which may themselves be involved as hosts, and on which the numbers of their predators ultimately depend, such as is …

Body Temperatures Of Manis Gigantea And Manis Tricuspis, Clyde Jones

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Little information has been published with regard to body temperatures of pangolins. Eisentraut (Saugetierk, Mitt. 4:64-67, 1959) provided a few rectal temperatures of Manis tricuspis. Data available on body temperatures, as well as detailed information on other aspects of the biology of pangolins, were summarized by Mohr (Schuppentiere, Die neue Brehm-Bucherei, A. Ziemsen Verlag-Wittenberg Lutherstadt, 99 pp., 1961).

The purpose of this report is to present some additional information on body temperatures and thermal regulatory responses of M. gigantea and M. tricuspis.

Measurements Of Aerosol Size Distributions And Vertical Fluxes Of Aerosols On Land Subject To Wind Erosion, Dale A. Gillette, Irving H. Blifford Jr., Charles R. Fenster Sep 1972

Measurements Of Aerosol Size Distributions And Vertical Fluxes Of Aerosols On Land Subject To Wind Erosion, Dale A. Gillette, Irving H. Blifford Jr., Charles R. Fenster

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

To assess wind erosion as a source of atmospheric soil particles, vertical aerosol fluxes near the ground in an eroding field were computed by assuming a vertical transport mechanism similar to that for momentum. Aerosol gradients were measured by jet impactors located 1.5 and 6 m above the ground, and wind velocity gradients were measured by totalizing-three anemometers located 1.5, 3 and 6 m above the ground.

Information on the aerosol size distributions and quantity in the size range 0.3

Review Of Frank Regen, Apuleius Philosophus Platonicus. Untersuchungen Zur Apologie (De Magia) Und Zu De Mundo, Thomas Nelson Winter Sep 1972

Review Of Frank Regen, Apuleius Philosophus Platonicus. Untersuchungen Zur Apologie (De Magia) Und Zu De Mundo, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This work examines the demonology of the Apology, De Mundo, De Deo Socratis, Florida, and De Dogmate Platonis in various aspects, noting places where De Mundo transmutes the meaning of its Greek model, the Peri Kosmou. These changes in meaning Dr. Regen shows to be systematic; they align the Latin version with Plato’s Symposium in places, and with Apuleius’ principles generally. Some changes may be illusory: does “rex omnium et pater” differ enough from ho panton hegemon kai genetor that conclusions can be drawn from the difference? Most changes, though, are more substantive. The sum is a useful …

The Resources Management Movement (The Coming Death Of Production Management Education), Richard J. Schonberger Sep 1972

The Resources Management Movement (The Coming Death Of Production Management Education), Richard J. Schonberger

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Production management, taught in nearly all colleges of business administration, is not a popular course. One reason it is not popular is that it does not relate to the typical young student's life experiences. This typical student has for 18 years or more been a social animal, and thus he can relate to college courses in the sociopsychological realm. The rare student who has considerable work experience is the only one likely to appreciate and perhaps even enjoy a course in production management (or operations management, as it is called in some schools).

But this kind of problem is found …

Frenkel Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul Schulze, John Hardy Aug 1972

Frenkel Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul Schulze, John Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

The method of lattice statics and the deformation dipole model have been applied to Frenkel defects in ionic crystals. For isolated interstitials, all short-ranged repulsive and Coulomb-defect host-lattice ion forces were evaluated at the relaxed configuration. The zero-order Coulomb force was allowed to act on the remainder of the host-lattice ions past first neighbors. We have calculated Frenkel-pair formation energies, ionic displacements, and ionic polarizations in the twelve Na, K, Rb halides. Our results show over all that, in ionic crystals of the rocksalt structure, Schottky defect pairs are more likely to be present than Frenkel defect pairs.

This manual reflects the lessons learned about technical intelligence during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The manual explains the theory of Army technical intelligence and describes strategic technical intelligence organizations in the United States.

Much of the manual explains technical intelligence activities of US forces in the field. It explains technical intelligence planning and collection activities. The need to label and handle captured equipment properly is stressed.

Appendices list references and technical intelligence categories, provide a sample technical intelligence plan, and explain handling and reporting of captured materiel and the standard nomenclature system for identifying Soviet bloc weapons and …

Review Of A. R. W. Harrison, The Law Of Athens: Procedure, Thomas Nelson Winter Aug 1972

Review Of A. R. W. Harrison, The Law Of Athens: Procedure, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

For the topics covered, the book is a useful and thorough reference. The evidence is presented, and where Harrison goes beyond it, there is always fair warning (e.g., “on a priori grounds, one would have expected that,” or “we may suppose ...”). The book is full of discussion of the finer points, and the discussion is honest and undogmatic. Harrison would clearly have been a fine fellow to discuss the Attic orators with: I am sorry I shall not have the chance; I am glad that his colleague preserved this book for all of us.

Extending Lactation Records In Progress To 305-Day Equivalent, J. F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The data consisted of 204,558 complete Holstein lactations in 2,100 herds compiled by the New York Dairy Records Processing Laboratory from 1959 to 1969 All lactation records had to have a 9th or 10th test day to be complete. The generalized least squares analysis used a model including mean, herd-year, and season-age-stage as fixed effects. The error term included random effects of con, and residual variation. Means for specified stages of lactation for milk and fat were estimated for lactations 1, 2, 3, and 4 or greater which were grouped by age of freshening, two age groups for the first …

A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner Jul 1972

A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Further study indicates that the Menoceras remains collected from the "Bridgeport Quarries" (lower port:on or the Marsland Formation, Middle Miocene, of the Hemingford Group) are of a new species.

In 1962, these dicerathere remains were considered to be a geologic variety of Diceratherium niobrarensis (Stecher, Schultz, and Tanner). However, later (Tanner, 1969) a generic distinction was revived, separating the Menoceras Troxell from Diceratherium Marsh. Diceretherium niobrarensis was then placed in synonymy with Menoceras arikarense (Barbour).

The new species is an intermediate between Menoceras arikarense (Barbour) from the Harrison Formation and Menoceras marslandensis Tanner, from the upper portion of the Marsland …

Two Lynx-Like Cats From The Pliocene And Pleistocene, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin Jul 1972

Two Lynx-Like Cats From The Pliocene And Pleistocene, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new species (Lynx stouti) of small felid is described from the lower Pliocene of Colorado. This form has several characters in common with the modern Lynx and may be ancestral to that genus. A new subspecies of Lynx issiodorensis Croizet and Jobert is described as L. i. kurteni from the Mullen Assemblage, Cherry County, Nebraska. The relationships of this form to other lynxes are discussed along with the paleo-distribution of the genus.

The classification of the felinae has always been somewhat controversial, especially at the generic level. One fairly homogenous group of cats which has been separated …
