Ec 73-956 Casseroles, Ethel Diedrichsen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Casserole dishes can add interest to everyday meals. They can be easy to make and serve. Usually they provide part of the protein in the form of meat, poultry, eggs, fish or cheese that is needed every day. Some casserole dishes are more economical than others. Those extended with bread or cereal foods are among the thriftiest choices. Money saving ideas for casserole dishes include: 1. Use of less tender cuts of meat made tender by cooking slowly with moisture, or by grinding, cubing, pounding and scoring. 2. Use of leftovers. 3. Grocery shopping on bargain days. 4. Use of …

G73-57 Hot Weather Livestock Stress, Allen C. Wellman Jan 1973

G73-57 Hot Weather Livestock Stress, Allen C. Wellman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

During periods of high temperatures and humidity, livestock losses can occur from "Hot Weather Stress." How weather stress is particularly hazardous to closely confined livestock (those in feedlots, sorting and holding pens, trucks and rail cars). High relative humidity when the temperature is at 80 degrees or higher adds to the likelihood of profit-stealing losses if necessary precautions are not taken.

Nebraska livestock producers can make their livestock handling and marketing plans flexible enough or take necessary precautions to reduce or eliminate livestock hot weather stress by following this Livestock Weather Hazard Guide.

G73-62 Webworm Control In Sugarbeets (Revised March 1979), Arthur F. Hagen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The sugarbeet webworm and the alfalfa webworm attack sugarbeets. Frequent outbreaks have been reported in sugarbeets from both species, so they are now generally listed only as "webworms." Their life history, damage and control are similar and are discussed in this publication.

Racial Composition Of Migrant Populations Of Sandhill Cranes In The Northern Plains States, Douglas H. Johnson, Robert E. Stewart Jan 1973

Racial Composition Of Migrant Populations Of Sandhill Cranes In The Northern Plains States, Douglas H. Johnson, Robert E. Stewart

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

During recent years, there has been increasing pressure to expand hunting seasons on Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) in the northern plains states. Hunters desire to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the sizable flocks of this large bird in this area. Prior to passage of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918, the Sandhill Crane was hunted and considered to have high sporting and eating qualities. In addition, complaints have been received from farmers regarding grain crop depredations by cranes. It has been suggested (Boeker et al., 1961:16) that flocks of cranes would be more widely dispersed …

Animal Damage Control In South Dakota, V. Van Ballenberghe Jan 1973

Animal Damage Control In South Dakota, V. Van Ballenberghe

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

South Dakota, like virtually all other states, is subject to economic losses from wildlife depredations. We have been in the government sponsored, animal damage control business perhaps longer than some states - our history dates back to the time of Three-toes and the Custer Wolf. In 1973 we are still in that business, perhaps more intensively than ever before, and we regard animal damage control as one of the most pervasive and difficult to solve wildlife problems facing us.

The Missouri River bisects South Dakota into approximately equal "East River" and "West River" land areas. These differ ecologically, and to …

Crayfish, Leech, And Snail Control Jan 1973

Crayfish, Leech, And Snail Control

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

We have effective results in controlling crayfish in our ponds using Baytex. Baytex is a higly toxic compound that effects the nervous system of many organisms. Used in small concentrations it will kill crayfish without hurting fish. We use Baytex at 40 ppb. We normally dilute the required amount of chemical with water and then mix it thoroughly in the pond. Leeches can be controlled using Dylox. Masoten is another trade name for dylox. The recommended rate of application is 1/2 ppm. This should be applied in a manner so it is thoroughly mixed in the ground. Recommened treatment for …

The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller Jan 1973

The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I have offered evidence that name-calling is a linguistic act which correlates the assumption of a status-relation between speaker and addressee with the use of terms marked (+abusive). To call someone a bastard, for.this reason, is not understood as the attempt to categorize him according to some term whose meaning, in the ordinary sense, is a list of lexical features. Rather it is the attempt to categorize him as without status in relation to the speaker himself, in defiance of his expectations, and because he has himself deserved it by himself invoking such a right over the speaker. This understanding …

Coyote Denning As A Method Of Damage Control, Walden C. Lemm Jan 1973

Coyote Denning As A Method Of Damage Control, Walden C. Lemm

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The coyote denning operation is a useful method in coyote control, both to control populations and to eliminate problem animals, but a thorough knowledge of coyote behavior prior to and during the denning season is essential for productive results.

Coyotes do not dig their own dens, but enlarge existing holes dug by other animals, often those dug by badgers. Coyote den holes are not difficult to distinguish from holes dug by smaller animals. Being long-legged animals, their den entrances are elongated vertically instead of being round like those of badgers and other short-legged animals.

An Assessment Of The Coyote Problem In The Great Plains States, Dale A. Wade Jan 1973

An Assessment Of The Coyote Problem In The Great Plains States, Dale A. Wade

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

It has now been 21 months since President Nixon's Executive Order #11643 was issued and there has been a complete annual reproductive cycle in the coyote population of the western states without any major influence by chemical controls. The use of mechanical controls, including non-lethal methods, and greater emphasis on removing only specific offending animals has been advocated during this time as a solution where coyotes prey on domestic animals. With this brief look back, what have been the results?

We do not have absolute data on coyote numbers and livestock depredations resulting from this change in coyote management programs. …
