Some Species Of Lecithaster Lühe, 1901 (Digenea: Hemiuridae) And Related Genera From Fishes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Lecithaster helodes n. sp. is described from Mugil curema and M. cephalus. It differs from the closely related L. mugilis Yamaguti, 1970 by having four rather than three ovarian lobes and other minor differences. Discussions and measurements are presented for L. confusus Odhner, 1905, L. leiostomi Overstreet, 1970, Hysterolecitha elongata Manter, 1931, Aponurus pyriformis (Linton, 1910) n. comb., and A. elongatus Siddiqi & Cable, 1960. Branchadena Linton, 1910 is considered a synonym of Aponurus Looss, 1907. New host records are listed for some of the above hemiurid trematodes. Leurodera ocyri Travassos, Frietas & Bihrnheim, 1965 and L. inaequalis Travassos, …

Static Equilibrium Conditions For A Rigid-Ion Crystal, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy
Static Equilibrium Conditions For A Rigid-Ion Crystal, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The equilibrium requirements for a static ionic crystal impose a number of constraints on the short-range forces which become increasingly more important when one is dealing with complex structures. These constraints are presented and discussed for a general rigid-ion lattice, and a specific discussion is presented for the wurtzite structure.
A Circular Dichroic Study Of Cu (Ii) -Ribonuclease Complexes, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Kensal E. Van Holde
A Circular Dichroic Study Of Cu (Ii) -Ribonuclease Complexes, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Kensal E. Van Holde
Papers in Microbiology
The visible and ultraviolet circular dichroic (CD) spectra resulting from the interaction of ribonuclease with successive Cu(I1) ions have been recorded under a variety of conditions. At pH 7 in the presence of 0.16 M KC1 a broad, negative band was found in the visible region. This band increased in intensity and changed in shape as successive coppers were added. The circular dichroic spectra could be analyzed in terms of two kinds of binding sites: a single strong site with CD minimum at about 710 nm, and four weaker sites with CD minimum at about 600 nm. The binding constants …

Determination Of The Origin Of The 10.6-Pm Absorption In C02 Laser Window Materials, John R. Hardy, B. S. Agrawal
John R. Hardy Papers
Theoretical studies are presented which show that it should be possible to determine whether the absorption at 10.6 pm in alkali halides is due to impurities or whether it is intrinsic. These studies show that the temperature dependence of the measured absorption should be very different for intrinsic multiphonon absorption as compared with defect-activated absorption.
Motion And Time Studies Of Milking Parlors And Routines, R. D. Appleman, C. F. Micke
Motion And Time Studies Of Milking Parlors And Routines, R. D. Appleman, C. F. Micke
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study defines and describes the parameters of milking in both the elevated side-opening and herringbone style milking parlor. Included in this "motion and time" study are measurements of differences in milking routines or techniques, as well as the probable contribution of certain mechanical aids, including both crowd gates and group-washing systems. Milker (men) differences are also identified. Detailed measurements of time requirements for specific milking activities or chores are expensive to obtain. Very limited data are found in the scientific literature. This bulletin is published to supply resource data which may be used in planning milking parlors or as …

Control Of Loopers On Snap Beans, Elvis A. Heinrichs, E. E. Burgess, Charles L. Mullins, W. J. Vanlandingham
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Snap beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., are important to the economy of Tennessee. According to the publication, Tennessee Agricultural Statistics, 13,000 acres were grown in Tennessee in 1971 with a value of $2,984,000. Tennessee produces 5.9% of the beans grown in the United States and ranks fifth in the nation in snap bean production. Tennessee-grown beans are processed in Tennessee and in nearby states. In 1972 demand was up because of poor growing weather in the adjacent bean producing states. Most beans in Tennessee are grown on the Cumberland Plateau, Sequatchie Valley, and in extreme northeast Tennessee. In recent years, looper …
Comparison Of The Direct Agglutination And Indirect Hemagglutination Tests In The Determination Of Blood Serum Titers To Escherichia Coli Organisms, I. A. Schipper, Clayton L. Kelling, H. Ebeltoft, D. Graves
Comparison Of The Direct Agglutination And Indirect Hemagglutination Tests In The Determination Of Blood Serum Titers To Escherichia Coli Organisms, I. A. Schipper, Clayton L. Kelling, H. Ebeltoft, D. Graves
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A comparison of the direct agglutination test and the indirect hemagglutination test for the detection of blood serum antibodies to Escherichia coli organisms indicated that these serological tests were comparable. In some instances the indirect hemagglutination test provided higher endpoint readings. Preparation of the antigens for the indirect hemagglutination test was more time consuming than for the direct agglutination test. Crude extract and purified polysaccharides were comparable as red blood cell sensitizing agents.
Colony Structure And Organization Of Pipistrellus Subflavus In Southern Louisiana, Clyde Jones, Royal D. Suttkus
Colony Structure And Organization Of Pipistrellus Subflavus In Southern Louisiana, Clyde Jones, Royal D. Suttkus
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Few observations have been made on populations of bats in caveless Louisiana. information on populations of some species was included by Lowery (1943) on distribution and taxonomy of the mammals of Louisiana. Pagels (1970) presented data on populations of Tadarida brasiliensis, but these were incidental to a study perature responses. Some observations made during a one-year study of a Pipistrellus subflavus were summarized by Jones and Pagels (1968).
Data on population structure and habits of P. subflavus were summarized and Davis (1969). Pipistrellus subflavus was reported to make extensive use as winter hibernacula and summer night roosts. Data on summer …
Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton
Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Andrew Billingsley in Black Families in White America has criticized much of the previous research on the black family, saying that social scientists have ignored the structural variation among families and have focused on a very limited number of family functions. To correct what he believes to be a distorted picture of the black family, he has suggested a typology of family structures and a large number of family functions which should be taken into consideration. This paper, based upon data collected from 321 black households, uses Billingsley’s typology to examine the association between family structures and functions. It is …
Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways
Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Since the publication of "Vernacular names of North American mammals north of Mexico" by Hall et al. (1957) and its subsequent revision (Hall, 1965), systematic and other studies have contributed materially to a better understanding of the nomenclature of North American mammals. For this reason, and because of the usefulness, principally to students, of checklists that record both scientific and vernacular names, an updated listing of New World mammalian species north of Mexico is timely. As in the previous lists, a specific vernacular name applies to all populations of that species.
The present checklist includes all species of North American …

An External Goniometer For Orientation Of A Cryostat, N.C. Lockhart, L.F. Nichols, Craig J. Eckhardt
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
An economical two-circle orienting external goniometer has been designed and fabricated for an Andonian liquid helium Dewar. The Dewar can be tilted ±30° from the vertical in two perpendicular directions. The geometrical center of the Dewar's optical cavity moves a maximum of 1 mm when the cryostat is tilted the full 30°. The basic design involves the rotation of two concentric cylinders riding on bearing surfaces. Two chain belts and gear boxes are used as drive mechanisms.

Control Of Pantothenate Accumulation In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Tsuneo Kaneshiro, Larry O. Arthur, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
Two pantothenate-requiring mutants of Agrobacterium tumefaciens have been isolated. One of them (strain WMP-1) is unusual in that growth levels equivalent to the parent strain are achieved only when the medium is additionally supplemented with aspartate or another compound related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Extracts of cells grown on limiting aspartate were found to contain four times more 14IC-pantothenate than th6se grown at optimal aspartate concentrations. This difference was found in both the perchloric acid-soluble and -insoluble fractions, presumably the coenzyme A pool and acyl carrier protein, respectively. These findings are discussed in terms of membrane integrity and …

Control Of The Army Cutworm On Alfalfa In Nebraska, G. R. Manglitz, J. M. Schalk, L. W. Andersen, K. P. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The army cutworm, Euxoa auxiliaris (Grote), is a frequent early spring pest of alfalfa in the western Plains States. Good control with endrin was reported by Burkhardt (1954), Pfadt (1955), and DePew (1959). Also, endosulfan appeared to give good control on alfalfa (Pfadt 1960) and on small grains (K. P. Pruess, 1959, University of Nebraska, Department of Entomology, unpublished report) but not on sugarbeets (DePew 1959). The purpose of the present study was to test some of the newer insecticides, particularly those that have been effective against other species of cutworms. Three tests were conducted at various locations in south-central …

Notes On Some Mammals From Jalisco, Mexico, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The varied topography and climate of the Mexican state of Jalisco have resulted in a diverse mammalian fauna, no comprehensive account of which has been published. Significant collections of mammals from Jalisco were obtained for the Museum of Natural History, the University of Kansas, between 1949 and 1969 by field parties and individual field representatives, most notably J. R. Alcorn, R. W. Dickerman, and especially P. L. Clifton. Some of the specimens thus obtained have been recorded in systematic accounts of individual taxa or in reports on selected taxonomic groups (see for example, Choate, 1970; Genoways, 1972; Genoways and Jones, …
Absolute Line Strengths By Analysis Of Lu-Fano Plots With Application To Excited State Transitions In Neon, Anthony F. Starace
Absolute Line Strengths By Analysis Of Lu-Fano Plots With Application To Excited State Transitions In Neon, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Using energy eigenfunctions obtained by semi-empirical analysis of the Lu-Fano plot of energy level positions and employing the Coulomb approximation of Bates and Damgaard, we calculate absolute line strengths for transitions between the neon two-channel Rydberg series 2p5(2P3/2,1/2)ns J = 1 and 2p5 (2P3/2,1/2)n′ p J = 0 for n, n' = 3,4. Each Rydberg series is analyzed separately to obtain a set of five parameters which completely define the energy eigenfunctions for all values of n and n'. Interactions between the ns J = 1 …

This book is an attempt to present to the general public representative types of many of the conspicuous wild flowers found in Nebraska. These 260-some plants in no way constitute a flora of Nebraska which would number some 1,700 species of flowering plants. Included herein are both native and naturalized flowering herbaceous plants exclusive of the grasses and grasslike plants. Among these are plants that have had a long existence here and others which have recently invaded our area. Some are highly cherished and others are considered as common weeds. Excluded from this book are woody plants, such as trees, …
