Magnetic Interactions And High-Field Magnetization In Dilute Magnetic Alloys , J.M. Franz, David J. Sellmyer
Magnetic Interactions And High-Field Magnetization In Dilute Magnetic Alloys , J.M. Franz, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
Magnetic interactions have been investigated in Cu(Mn) and Cu(Fe) alloys with concentrations ranging from several hundred to several thousand ppm. In each system two sets of alloys were prepared in different ways to test for sensitivity to structrual modifications. In the Cu(Mn) alloys there was very little difference in magnetic properties of the two sets of alloys which is consistent with the expectation that the Cu(Mn) alloys form good random solid solutions. The magnetic properties were compared with the recent mean-random-field theory of Klein in the low-temperature limit. It was found that the theory is able to explain the concentration …
Lattice Dynamics Of A Rigid-Ion Model For Gadolinium Molybdate, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy
Lattice Dynamics Of A Rigid-Ion Model For Gadolinium Molybdate, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
Results of lattice-dynamical calculations are presented which support the view that the ferroelectric phase transition in gadolinium molybdate (GMO) arises from the softening and ultimate instability of a doubly degenerate zone-edge mode of the high-temperature paraelectric phase. We have used a rigid-ion model in which the short-range force constants are obtained from a detailed knowledge of the crystal structure together with the conditions imposed by the requirement that the crystal must be in static equilibrium under the combined influence of both Coulomb and short-range forces. Our results show that this type of approach is very useful when one is dealing …
Symmetry-Forbidden Resonant Raman Scattering In Cu2O, S. P. S. Porto, P. F. Williams
Symmetry-Forbidden Resonant Raman Scattering In Cu2O, S. P. S. Porto, P. F. Williams
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
We have observed resonant Raman scattering from the two longitudinal branches of the Raman-forbidden F1u modes of Cu2O. The agreement between our measured scattering cross section as a function of excitation frequency and a calculated cross section which assumes an intraband Frohlich electron-phonon interaction is good. This represents a quantitative confirmation of the resonant-Raman-scattering theory proposed by Martin.

Comment On "Length And Velocity Formulas In Approximate Oscillator-Strength Calculations", Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
A previous paper by Starace showed that the length formula for the electric-dipole matrix element is the only consistent one for calculations that solve for the exact eigenfunctions of an approximate Hamiltonian containing a nonlocal potential. It is emphasized here that disagreement between such a length-formula calculation and experiment indicates inadequacy of the approximate Hamiltonian and not that the velocity formula may be preferable.

Nongeographic Variation In The Long-Nosed Bat, Choeroniscus Intermedius, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker, Bernard Wyatt
Nongeographic Variation In The Long-Nosed Bat, Choeroniscus Intermedius, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker, Bernard Wyatt
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Of the 12 measurements analyzed, only length of tail exhibited enough individual variation to warrant its deletion in analysis of geographic or interspecific variation in the genus Choeroniscus. Also, because of the difficulty in consistently taking the measurement, we also suggest elimination of postorbital constriction.
Specimens of Choeroniscus intermedius were found to exhibit significant secondary sexual variation in five of the 12 measurements studied. Therefore, it is clear that males and females should be separated in analyses of variation within members of the genus. Females were found to be the larger in 10 of the 12 measurements--similar to the …
Magnetoresistance In Iron And Cobalt To 150 Koe , R.V. Coleman, R.C. Morris, David J. Sellmyer
Magnetoresistance In Iron And Cobalt To 150 Koe , R.V. Coleman, R.C. Morris, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
Magnetoresistance anisotropy and field dependence have been studied in single crystals of iron and cobalt in fields up to 150 kOe in the temperature range 1-4.2 K. The crystals of iron and cobalt had residual resistance ratios up to ∼4600 and ∼400, respectively. The relation Δρ/ρ0=aBn has been studied for both metals and in the case of iron the exponent n approaches values in the range 1.8-1.9 for fields up to 90 kOe and then decreases to the range 1.3-1.5 at 150 kOe. This decrease in the exponent has been observed for all field and current …

Seasonal Abundance Of The European Corn Borer Ostrinia Nubilalis (Hbn.) Within The North Central United States, R. E. Hill, H. C. Chiang, A. J. Keaster, W. B. Showers, G. L. Reed
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Annual changes in corn borer populations in the North Central States were measured as a phase of a Regional Project, NC-20, entitled "Factors Influencing Corn Borer Populations" in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Ohio over a period of years. Standardized procedures were followed to estimate the seasonal abundance of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hbn.), under cropping procedures in different locations within the North Central States. The primary purpose of the present bulletin is to present results for the 1965 to 1969 period and to compare these results with the previous 10 years and thus attempt to analyze …

Influence Of Tissue Drying On O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Content In Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz
Influence Of Tissue Drying On O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Content In Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
A fluorometric procedure was used to study changes in levels of the free and bound forms of the cis and trans isomers of o-hydroxycinnamic acid (o-RCA) associated with drying sweetclover (Melilotus) tissues under various conditions of time and temperature. Leaves, or leaves and stems, of three sweetclover varieties, 'Spanish,' 'Evergreen,' and 'Goldtop,' and two closely related, highly inbred lines (CuCuBB and CuCubb genotypes) were used. Drying temperatures of 30 and 40 C were used most extensively. When dried at 30 C, leaves lost more than half of their bound cis-o-RCA, and a small …

Particles of fanleaf and yellow mosaic viruses are reported in the lumen of the esophagus of Xiphinerna index. Differences in cuticular morphology suggest differences in charged receptor sites which may offer an explanation for virus location and orderly arrangement.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Nine measures related to breeding efficiency were used for comparisons among purebred Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Holsteins, and Jerseys and between purebreds and 32 crossbred groups representing 2-breed, 3-breed, 5/8, and backcrosses by purebred sires and progeny of crossbred sires. There were four herds with Holsteins common to all, Brown Swiss and Jerseys in three herds and Ayrshires in one herd. Four 2-breed, two 3-breed, and two backcross groups were common to two or more herds. Among purebreds, breed effects were significant in 16 of 72 tests, but there was no consistent trend favoring one breed. Generally, Jerseys were better than …

Idyllic Greek And Honest Verse: Review Of Daryl Hine, The Homeric Hymns And The Battle Of The Frogs And Mice: A Translation, Thomas Nelson Winter
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
The editor chose to write poetry. He succeeded. I checked him against the Greek and found him accurate; I checked him against earlier translations and found him independent. I read Hine's English alone and found it poetic. I am impressed, nearly overwhelmed. The book is fun to read, just like the original. The material is captivating, too. It provides a vision of Man and the Olympians, idyllic narratives and comic ones. Many, like that of Aphrodite obliged to submit to her own power and to Anchises, deserve to become part of everyone's general cultural background. The Hymns (with the Frogs and …

Catullus Purified: A Brief History Of Carmen 16, Thomas Nelson Winter
Catullus Purified: A Brief History Of Carmen 16, Thomas Nelson Winter
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
“The obscenity of Catullus has long been a stumbling block,” writes C. H. Sisson. Carmen 16 probably offers more of an impediment to the translator than any other poem in the corpus. It seems also to have suffered more: coyly rendered, opaquely rendered, bowdlerized, and finally truncated through being misunderstood, this poem may show how some losses have occurred in the transmission of classical texts. An obvious difficulty is in the repeated first and final line. What can a translator do with it? Until recently, English as forthright as the Latin could never be printed. A variety of circumlocutions have …

The data included records on 440 purebred sows and gilts of Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire breeding mated in all combinations to produce purebred and two-breed cross litters. A total of 119 purebred gilts (39 with purebred litters and 80 with crossbred litters) were slaughtered 30-days postbreeding and their reproductive tracts evaluated for number of corpora lutea and early embryo development. Farrowing records included 89 purebred and 161 two-breed cross litters produced at the Ft. Reno Experiment Station during the spring and fall of 1971 and the summer of 1972. Reproductive failures (females not exhibiting estrus or open at slaughter or …

Tool-Making And Tool-Using In The Northern Blue Jay, Thony B. Jones, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Laboratory-raised Northern blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) have been observed tearing pieces from pages of newspaper and utilizing them as tools to rake in food pellets which were otherwise out of reach. The frequency of this behavior was dependent upon the motivational state of the jay and the presence of food pellets.

Cathetocephalus Thatcheri Gen. Et Sp. N. (Tetraphyllidea: Cathetocephalidae) Fam. N. From The Bull Shark, Murray D. Dailey, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Cathetocephalus thatcheri gen. et sp. n. is described from the spiral valve of the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas (Valenciennes), taken in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of Florida. A new family is erected for the new genus. The species most closely resembles Pillersium owenium Southwell, 1927, in that both possess a scolex which is perpendicular to the long axis of the strobila. It differs, however, in having a single neck and holdfast organ rather than a bifurcate neck with two bothridia. Also, the surfaces of the scolex differ from those of P. owenium by possessing fleshy papilliform …

Annotated Checklist Of Mammals Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. I. Chiroptera, J. Knox Jones Jr., James Dale Smith, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Our field investigations on the Yucatán Peninsula were initiated in the summer of 1962 when two field parties from the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas visited the area. One field party consisted of W.E. Duellman and six students enrolled in a summer field course in vertebrate zoology; the other party was composed of the senior author and four students who were conducting a survey of Middle American terrestrial vertebrates and their ectoparasites. Some of the data relative to ectoparasites obtained during this study have appeared in the publications of Emerson (1971), Kohls et al. (1965), Loomis …

Resonant Raman Scattering From Iodine: Spectral Changes With Excitation Frequency, P. F. Williams, D. L. Rousseau
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
We have recorded high-resolution resonant Raman spectra of molecular iodine which show very pronounced systematic spectral band-shape variations with incident laser frequency. This frequency dependence and the presence of the multiple overtones in resonant Raman scattering from iodine may be explained by a theory in which the scattering intensity depends on Franck-Condon overlap integrals. We have obtained semiquantitative agreement between the observed spectra and spectra calculated from this theory.
