A Comparative Study Of Copulation In Passalidae (Coleoptera): New Positions For Beetles, Jack C. Schuster

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Copulation, observed in 6 species of Passalidae, occurred with one beetle up-side-down in relation to the other. In Odontotaenius they were end to end (known for Coleoptera only in Scolytidae); in Passalus they were venter to venter facing nearly the same direction (known for no other beetles and only for certain Diptera and Mecoptera among other insects).

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell Jan 1975

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In many areas of the Midwestern United States, a safe and plentiful supply of groundwater is a primary concern. Groundwater is sporadic, unreliable, shallow, and often polluted, even though these same areas often have an annual rainfall in excess of 1 m.

The pollution problems associated with these groundwater supplies are both chemical and bacterial. Older wells are often the most dangerous. Linings made of open brick near the surface, cracked casings and covers, and nearby privy, septic tank, and barnyard sites accentuate the problems in shallow groundwater aquifers. High levels of nitrates frequently present in the shallow domestic well …

Oestrus, Lh, Ovulation And Fertility In Beef Heifers, R. K. Christenson, S. E. Echternkamp, D. B. Laster

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The pregnancy rate resulting from matings at a single oestrus in beef cattle averages 70% for natural mating (Turman, Laster, Renbarger & Stephens, 1971) and 60% for artificial insemination (Laster, Glimp & Gregory, 1972). The sources and causes of low pregnancy rates have not been defined, but might include variation in time of ovulation relative to deposition of spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract, fertilization failure, ovum transport, abnormal ova and blastocyst development, and implantation failure. The interval from onset of oestrus to ovulation in dairy cattle has been reported to average 29±6hr with a range from 16 to 42 …

Property Taxes .. Reform, Relief, Repeal ? Jan 1975

Property Taxes .. Reform, Relief, Repeal ?

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

The property tax is one of the oldest and most criticized forms of taxation. Despite criticism over the years, it is still an important source of revenue for most local governments and some state governments because of its income capability and familiarity in the tax system. Efforts to reform property tax administration, provide tax relief to property owners, and repeal property taxes on certain classes of property will continue for years to come. This publication is designed to place these issues in a decision-making framework. The purpose is to educate rather than to advocate a particular solution.

Modes Of Allocation And The Acculturation Process, David T. Jones Jan 1975

Modes Of Allocation And The Acculturation Process, David T. Jones

Nebraska Anthropologist

This research proposal has evolved out of a class assignment in a "methods" course in cultural anthropology. The assignment required "real but small-scale fieldwork" in a "community" of the student's own choosing. This approach was based on the belief that anthropology is only learned by doing anthropology. One of the objectives of the course was the designing of a research proposal which would have some merit and which would be based on the fieldwork.

The community selected was a small group of American Indians who met weekly in a prayer group at a local church under the sole direction of …

Beware - Your Sins Will Find You Out!, Betty Mccormick

Nebraska Anthropologist

The village, surrounded by the seemingly infinite flatlands of central America, is an agricultural community with a population of approximately 1000 people. The town, itself, is 12 blocks square and is laid out with spacious lots and wide paved streets. The main street is on the west side of the village and is wide also, with stores lining either side of four blocks. It's an impressive town, clean, neat, new but plain. The majority of homes are 20 years old or newer and are ranch-style. The older homes are small two story-white frame houses. Yards. are well kept, neat, and …

Paleo-Indian Lifeways In The American Southwest; 12,000 To 10,000 Bp, Robert E. Warren

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper deals with the lifeways of prehistoric populations inhabiting the North American Southwest from 12,000 to 10,000 years ago. Included is a brief delimitation and description of the Southwest area, a review of several current concepts regarding the environmental conditions in existence during the temporal span under concern, a series of brief descriptions of sites and site materials involved, and a concluding section wherein interpretation and inferences are drawn from both internal and external data. Three distinct complexes are recognized which appear to represent sequential cultural adaptations to shifting environmental conditions.

Influence Of Seed Size, Planting Depth, And Companion Crop On Emergence And Vigor Of Seedlings In Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Jan 1975

Influence Of Seed Size, Planting Depth, And Companion Crop On Emergence And Vigor Of Seedlings In Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Seed size has been shown to have an important influence on the emergence and early growth of seedlings of several forage legumes, but only fragmentary information on seed size effects in sweetclover (Melilotus spp.) has been published. Therefore, a 2-year study was conducted in which spring and fall seedings of small, medium, and large seeds of 'Madrid' and 'N13' sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam.) were made at depths of 19, 38, and 57 mm. The spring seeding also included a comparison of a companion crop (oats) with no companion crop. Data on emergence score and plant height were …

Systemization And The Legal Assistant In The Law Office, Richard R. Endacott Jan 1975

Systemization And The Legal Assistant In The Law Office, Richard R. Endacott

Nebraska Law Review

The need for increased efficiency in the law practice is obvious. The legal assistant–systems method is a valid approach to satisfying this need. It should be understood that this type of change does not come easily. It demands a large initial investment in terms of the lawyer's thought, energy, and time to create and implement the system. Those who have already made a commitment to this approach, however, have proved that it is an investment which will pay for itself over and over again in the years ahead.

New Trends In Informed Consent?, Linda Babbitt Jaeckel Jan 1975

New Trends In Informed Consent?, Linda Babbitt Jaeckel

Nebraska Law Review

Four recent cases have been hailed as opening a new door to recovery by plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases brought on a theory of informed consent. The major impact of these four cases on the law of informed consent is twofold: first, the necessity of expert testimony in establishing the defendant-physician's duty of disclosure, and second, the standard to be applied in showing proximate cause. This Comment analyzes these cases to determine the effect both on plaintiffs and on the nature of informed consent litigation.

Due Process And Prejudgment Creditors' Remedies: Sniadach And Fuentes Revisited: Mitchell V. W. T. Grant Co., 416 U.S. 600 (1974), Penny Berger Jan 1975

Due Process And Prejudgment Creditors' Remedies: Sniadach And Fuentes Revisited: Mitchell V. W. T. Grant Co., 416 U.S. 600 (1974), Penny Berger

Nebraska Law Review

Two Supreme Court decisions, Sniadach v. Family Finance Corp. in 1969, and Fuentes v. Shevin in 1972, appeared to herald a modern revolution in pre-judgment creditors' remedies. Their message: unless preceded by notice and an opportunity to be heard, such remedies violated the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment. For many observers, however, it appeared the revolution ended with the Court's decision in Mitchell v. W.T. Grant Co. It remains to be seen what Mitchell's effect will be in the area of pre-judgment remedies. While the decision does not purport to abandon the philosophy of Sniadach or Fuentes …

Agriculture And Energy: A Legal Perspective, Doug C. Nelson Jan 1975

Agriculture And Energy: A Legal Perspective, Doug C. Nelson

Nebraska Law Review

During the latter part of 1973 and the early part of 1974 the United States experienced wide publicity given to a concept called the "energy crisis." The energy crisis caused and will continue to cause serious concern in agriculture, particularly with respect to petroleum and natural gas. Agricultural production is a sequence of interdependent energy-using activities, commencing with fertilizer manufacturing and continuing through delivery of food and fiber to consumers from processing plants. The interruption of energy flow during any time or segment of this agricultural system will restrain efficient production. Thus, the availability of petroleum and gas can affect …

Juvenile Court Reform: The Juvenile Offender After L.B. 620, Thomas L. Hagel Jan 1975

Juvenile Court Reform: The Juvenile Offender After L.B. 620, Thomas L. Hagel

Nebraska Law Review

The Nebraska Legislature recently examined the problem of broad prosecutorial discretion in handling juvenile offenders. The product of this extensive examination is L.B. 620. One of the bill's primary purposes is "to remove children who are within the provisions of this act from the criminal justice system whenever possible. " The bill's effect has been to limit dramatically the county attorney's discretion when choosing the forum in which to prosecute the juvenile offender.

Statutory Forfeitures: The Taking Of Pearson's Yacht: Calero-Toledo V. Pearson Yacht Leasing Co., 416 U.S. 663 (1974), Steven E. Achelpohl Jan 1975

Statutory Forfeitures: The Taking Of Pearson's Yacht: Calero-Toledo V. Pearson Yacht Leasing Co., 416 U.S. 663 (1974), Steven E. Achelpohl

Nebraska Law Review

In Calero-Toledo v. Pearson Yacht Leasing Co., the United States Supreme Court recently reaffirmed its longstanding position that forfeiture statutes may be constitutionally applied to innocent property owners such as lessors, bailors, and secured creditors. The Court also held that seizure for purposes of forfeiture constitutes an "extraordinary situation" which justifies postponing notice and an adversary hearing. The decision overturned a lower court ruling which held the seizure and forfeiture to be unconstitutional on two distinct grounds: as a taking of property for government use without just compensation and as a taking of property without adequate notice and hearing. This …

Book Review: History Of The Supreme Court Of The United States: The Taney Period, 1836–1864 By Carl B. Swishert, James A. Lake Sr.

Nebraska Law Review

In 1955 Congress established a permanent committee to administer projects funded by a bequest from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. The Act established as a first priority the preparation of "a history of the Supreme Court of the United States" by "one or more scholars of distinction." When completed that history will include twelve volumes, each covering a specific period of the Court's history. The volume being reviewed is the third volume published.

Public And Professional Assessment Of The Nebraska Bar, Susan Jacobs, June Wagoner Jan 1975

Public And Professional Assessment Of The Nebraska Bar, Susan Jacobs, June Wagoner

Nebraska Law Review

Watching Watergate unfold, public confidence in the bar descended to an all-time low in 1974, according to public opinion polls. Coincidentally, the Nebraska State Bar Association launched a public relations campaign designed to advise the public of active efforts to hold attorneys to the standards of the Code of Professional Responsibility. In an attempt to assess the status of the profession in Nebraska, a survey was conducted to compare opinions of the bar as they were expressed by lawyers and laypersons. Questions contained in the survey reflected concerns central to five of the Canons of Professional Responsibility.
