G75-269 Calf Scours: Causes, Prevention And Treatment, Don Hudson, R. Gene White Jan 1975

G75-269 Calf Scours: Causes, Prevention And Treatment, Don Hudson, R. Gene White

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Calf scours or calf diarrhea: understand how to recognize and treat this costly condition. Calf scours or calf diarrhea causes more financial loss to cow-calf producers than any other disease-related problem they encounter. Calf scours is not a disease--it is a clinical sign of a disease which can have many causes. In diarrheas, the intestine fails to absorb fluids and/or secretion into the intestine is increased.

Module 8: Learning Activities For Self-Regulation, Francis P. Collea, Robert Fuller, Robert Karplus, Lester G. Paldy, John W. Renner

Physics Teaching and the Development of Reasoning: Workshop Materials

It is quite clear from the earlier modules in this workshop that a teacher's awareness of students' patterns of reasoning will influence his choice of subject matter, level of presentation, selection of text, and assignment of homework problems. We shall now describe some ways in which the learning activities can be planned so as to enhance the opportunities for self-regulation after a student is introduced to a new idea. On the basis of Piaget’s developmental theory, concrete learning activities play a central role in the improvement of a student's reasoning. The physics laboratory, therefore, is an especially important part of …

Ralph Albert Blakelock 1847-1919, Norman Geske Jan 1975

Ralph Albert Blakelock 1847-1919, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Introduction

To undertake the "study" of the work of Ralph Blake10ck is to become involved in one of the most complex problems in the history of our national art. It is a problem which includes not only the conventional considerations of biography, style and technique, each of them in Blakelock's case something less than clear cut, but also the psychological problem which combines the intricacies of the painter's personality with the intricacies of the social scene in which he lived. One must deal with a variety of elements - the artist and his contemporaries, the dealers, critics, collectors, and auction …

A Sense Of Place: The Artist And The American Land, Norman A. Geske Jan 1975

A Sense Of Place: The Artist And The American Land, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

One-fifth of the meals Americans eat, they eat in automobiles. Drive-in funeral homes make death more comfortable if not less dignified. Crispy apples disappear in the wake of improved applesauce technology. High rise ranch houses smell of artificial mountain air. People move around so much and have so little lingering connection with the land that even the tombstone makers complain. Walt Disney fashions an east coast "world" populated with faceless pansies in a thousand acres of "computerized fun." Russell Baker observes that America is vanishing.

America is not vanishing. It is being homogenized

This exhibition moves against that trend. The …

Physical Science Modules for Bioscience Students

OBJECTIVES

After you have completed this module, you will be able to:

a) describe qualitatively the pressure of blood in the human body as a function of location in the circulation system, i.e., aorta, artery, arterioles, ... , vena cava.

b) Discuss in a paragraph (short or long) how the osmotic pressure in the capillaries regulates the water level of the interstitial fluid under normal pressure.

c) Describe how a weak ventricle in the heart creates an edema in the capillaries. Use the terms of this module, i.e., abnormal pressure, water pressure inside and water pressure outside, in this description. …

Elementary Biological Statistics, Norman J. Chonacky Jan 1975

Elementary Biological Statistics, Norman J. Chonacky

Physical Science Modules for Bioscience Students

It is assumed that you have been introduced to the ideas of parametric descriptions of statistical data (e.g., mean, standard deviation, etc.) in the context of physical measurements. These concepts must be broadened and generalized in their interpretations when used in the context of biological data. It is the purpose of this module to introduce appropriate biological examples and employ them to generate and illustrate these broader notions of statistical analysis. Of particular interest will be questions such as: "What is it that the mean value of a data set seeks to represent when there is no 'true value ' …

Marginal Learning-Set Formation By The Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos), Maxwell W. Hunter Iii, Alan C. Kamil Jan 1975

Marginal Learning-Set Formation By The Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos), Maxwell W. Hunter Iii, Alan C. Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Each of three hand raised crows received 300 learning set problems in a modified WGTA using three-dimensional stimuli. Consistent within-problem learning was obtained but learning set formation was minimal. An analysis of hypothesis behavior (Levine, 1959) revealed a strong tendency towards position and stimulus preferences. These results raise the possibility of large species differences in learning set formation within the family Corvid

Ipomoea Carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) In Costa Rica, Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

This is the first report of Ipomoea carnea (Convolvulaceae) from lowland Costa Rica. These populations are unusual for the species in flower color, flowering season and pollinator. Other aspects of the biology of the species in Guanacaste, especially pollination, flower robbing and extrafloral nectary visitors, are discussed.

Rates Of Water Entry Into The Subsoil Of Several Soil Series In Nebraska, David T. Lewis Jan 1975

Rates Of Water Entry Into The Subsoil Of Several Soil Series In Nebraska, David T. Lewis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Rates of water entry were measured for 11 soil series representing many of the soils in parts of Nebraska where urban growth is most intensive. The wetting procedure in making the tests is critical and a 24 hour wetting time as usually recommended is not adequate for all soils if the percolation test is made during a dry season. Rates of water entry differed among soils even though a large amount of variation was evident within the same soil series. Statistical analysis showed a highly significant negative relationship between both clay content and bulk density and rates of water entry. …

Growth Potential Of Sandhills Ranches Through Irrigation, R. D. Carver, G. A. Helmers

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The purpose of this study was to compare extensive and intensive growth strategies of a typical Nebraska Sandhills ranch in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Study objectives were to: (1) Analyze growth of an average ranch firm of 450 animal units as it grows to 600-900 animal units. (2) Study the effects of an uncertain environment on the long-run growth opportunities of a ranch firm. (3) Compare extensive and intensive growth of a ranch firm.

Lipid Metabolism During Bacterial Growth, Sporulation, And Germination: Kinetics Of Fatty Acid And Macromolecular Synthesis During Spore Germination And Outgrowth Of Bacillus Thuringiensis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, John De Pinto, Lee A. Bulla Jr. Jan 1975

Bulla Jr.

Papers in Microbiology

The timing and kinetics of fatty acid synthesis are delineated for Bacillus thuringiensis spore germination and outgrowth by analyzing [U-14C ]acetate and [2-3H ]glycerol incorporation into chloroform-methanol-extractable and trichloroacetic acid-precipitable lipids. In addition to measurement of pulsed and continuous labeling of fatty acids, monitoring the incorporation of radioactive phenylalanine, thymidine, and uridine from the onset of germination through first cell division provides a profile of biochemical activities related to membrane differentiation and cellular development. Upon germination, ribonucleic acid synthesis is initiated, immediately followed by rapid and extensive fatty acid synthesis that in turn precedes protein, deoxyribonucleic …

Abortion: An Unresolved Issue—Are Parental Consent Statutes Unconstitutional?, Roberta S. Stick Jan 1975

Abortion: An Unresolved Issue—Are Parental Consent Statutes Unconstitutional?, Roberta S. Stick

Nebraska Law Review

In the companion cases of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, the United States Supreme Court acknowledged that a woman has the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. This right is fundamental and is encompassed within the constitutional right to privacy. Despite the Court's definitive position, many tangential issues regarding abortion remain unresolved. One such issue which the Court raised but did not decide in Roe concerns the constitutionality of statutes requiring parental consent in addition to the minor's consent before the minor can have an abortion. Of all the decisions handed down by state and federal district …

Implying A Civil Remedy From 15 U.S.C. § 1674(A): Stewart V. Travelers Corp., 503 F.2d 108 (9th Cir. 1974), Carl J. Circo Jan 1975

Implying A Civil Remedy From 15 U.S.C. § 1674(A): Stewart V. Travelers Corp., 503 F.2d 108 (9th Cir. 1974), Carl J. Circo

Nebraska Law Review

In Stewart v. Travelers Corp., the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that a private remedy rather than only criminal sanctions should be implied for a violation of section 1674(a) of Title 15 of the United States Code. As a response to the dilemma of no specifically mentioned private remedy, federal courts have developed a policy of implying a civil remedy for violations of statutory prohibitions like section 1674(a). The court's opinion was based on the Texas & Pacific Railway v. Rigsby principle and the line of federal cases that have developed from it.

Foreseeable Racial Segregation—A Presumption Of Unconstitutionality: United States V. School District Of Omaha, 521 F.2d 530 (1975), James R. Nearhood Jan 1975

Foreseeable Racial Segregation—A Presumption Of Unconstitutionality: United States V. School District Of Omaha, 521 F.2d 530 (1975), James R. Nearhood

Nebraska Law Review

A great deal of litigation involving alleged state-imposed racial segregation in the public schools has been inspired by the Brown v. Board of Education mandate. One of the most recent cases was United States v. School District of Omaha. The Department of Justice initiated that action, alleging that unconstitutional racial segregation existed within the Omaha public schools and seeking remedial relief. It was alleged that the defendants had engaged in a policy of intentional school segregation within the Omaha School District in violation of Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the fourteenth amendment of the …

The Supreme Court Avoids Considering Sex-Based Classifications: Geduldig V. Aiello, 417 U.S. 484 (1974), Rebecca L. Ross Jan 1975

The Supreme Court Avoids Considering Sex-Based Classifications: Geduldig V. Aiello, 417 U.S. 484 (1974), Rebecca L. Ross

Nebraska Law Review

In Geduldig v. Aielo, the United States Supreme Court held that California's refusal to insure normal pregnancies in the state disability insurance program was not a violation of the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment. Over strong dissent, the Court held that California could take one step at a time in selecting the disabilities its insurance program would cover. Therefore, the statutory scheme did not involve a denial of equal protection and the district court was reversed. In this holding, the Court offered dicta which have sewn the seeds of confusion in the lower courts and left murkier …

Middle And Late Cenozoic Tapirs From Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin, R. George Corner Jan 1975

Middle And Late Cenozoic Tapirs From Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin, R. George Corner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The distribution and evolution of Late Cenozoic tapirs are discussed and the forms present in Nebraska are reported. Two new species are described from the Ogallala Pliocene of Nebraska, ?Tapirus johnsoni and ?T. simpsoni. Tapirs are known in Nebraska from the Early Oligocene through the Middle Pleistocene. The northern limit of the distribution of the tapirs contracts gradually southward in North America throughout the Tertiary, and even during the Pleistocene interglacials Nebraska must have been near the northern limit of their range.

Stratigraphic Occurrences Of Teleoceras With A New Kimballianspecies From Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1975

Stratigraphic Occurrences Of Teleoceras With A New Kimballianspecies From Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Study of Teleoceras remains in the University of Nebraska State Museum indicates that this specialized, short-limbed rhinoceros inhabited the Central Great Plains from Early through Late Pliocene. Previously thought to have become extinct at the end of the middle Pliocene, this genus is now known from the very latest Pliocene. A new species, Teleoceras schultzi, is described from the Kimball Formation, Ogallala Group, Frontier County, Nebraska.
