An Analysis Of The Bison Dentition, Hudson-Meng Site, Sioux County, Nebraska, Kathleen D. Russell Jan 1976

An Analysis Of The Bison Dentition, Hudson-Meng Site, Sioux County, Nebraska, Kathleen D. Russell

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A study of many jaws and teeth representing over eighty animals has revealed ages ranging from .5 years through adult. Characteristics of the fourth pre-molars and third molars have been studied in an attempt to determine whether these animals are members of extinct Pleistocene species or varieties of more recent Bison.

Introduction

The Hudson-Meng Site (25-SX-115), located twenty-five miles northwest of Crawford, Nebraska, is the butchering area of a bison kill. For the past two seasons Dr. Larry Agenbroad and crews of students and volunteers have excavated the site. Approximately one-third of the original area has been uncovered. A relative …

The Effect Of Dietary Administration Of Ethylenedlaminetetraacetic Acid Upon The Mineral Content Of Mouse Tissues, Gary Sprague

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A 3.4 mM ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDT A) aqueous solution and 25 mM Na2EDTA, Na4EDTA and CaNa2EDTA aqueous solutions were fed laboratory white mice as drinking water for 28 day periods. EDT A in the blood plasma of animals used at the end of the 28 day period was undetectable using a colorimetric assay. Ca, Mg and Zn content of the bone, kidney, liver and muscle tissues were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Liver Ca and kidney Mg were reduced in animals administered CaNa2EDTA; kindey Ca and Mg were elevated in animals administered Na2 …

Applying Due Process To Gag Rules And Orders, Laurie Smith Camp Jan 1976

Applying Due Process To Gag Rules And Orders, Laurie Smith Camp

Nebraska Law Review

At its 1976 annual meeting held in August, the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates recommended a new court procedure for the application of due process to the issuance of gag orders. The proposal seeks to render standing gag rules unenforceable and would provide for special gag orders only after notice and an opportunity for a hearing are given to interested parties. The ABA proposal will help to reduce the current glut of judicial restraints by providing more specific procedural guidance than was offered by the Supreme Court in Nebraska Press Association v. Stuart. This article first explores …

Industrial Site Selection: Existing Institutions And Proposals For Reform, James Nearhood

Nebraska Law Review

Recent environmental concern has been drawn to the problem of industrial expansion as it relates to those natural resources traditionally considered "free," such as waterways and airsheds. The inevitable increasing conflict between industrial growth and environmental preservation makes the need for comprehensive land use regulation and industrial site control even more apparent. Most states do not currently possess comprehensive environmental legislation designed to facilitate industrial site selection pursuant to a program of general land use control. However, even where such legislation exists, it has generally proven to be inadequate to handle complex environmental and developmental problems because of hopeless interagency …

The Five-Year Like-Kind Exchange: Starker V. Commissioner, 75-1 U.S. Tax Cas. 87, 142 (D. Ore. 1975), Greg T. Stoma

Nebraska Law Review

Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 provides that no gain or loss will be recognized if certain qualifying property is "exchanged" for like-kind qualifying property rather than sold. The recent case of Starker v. Commissioner, has extended the definition of "exchange" far beyond the typical contemporaneous swapping of property situation to which the section had previously been applied.

Nebraska Law Review

The temporary restraining order is an ex parte injunction, issued without notice or prior hearing. In United Farm Workers v. Superior Court, the constitutionality of an ex parte temporary restraining order issued in an agricultural labor dispute was attacked under the first and fourteenth amendments to the federal Constitution and article I, section 2 of the California constitution as a prior restraint on free speech. This case presented the issue of whether peaceful mass labor picketing is subject to ex parte injunctive restraint.

H I In Early-Type Galaxies. Ii. Mass Loss And Galactic Winds, S. M. Faber, J. S. Gallagher

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Implications of observed upper limits to the neutral hydrogen content of E and SO galaxies from Paper I are discussed. If gas shed by dying stars is completely retained by these galaxies and exists as H I, these upper limits will be exceeded in only 109 yr for E's and SO's and in only 2 x 108 yr for NGC 4472. Evidently, gas either is hidden in some undetectable form or is removed from the interstellar medium completely.

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Electron Ejection Cross Sections In Helium By Proton Impact From 5 To 100 Kev, M. Eugene Rudd, D. H. Madison Jan 1976

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Electron Ejection Cross Sections In Helium By Proton Impact From 5 To 100 Kev, M. Eugene Rudd, D. H. Madison

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Absolute values of doubly differential cross sections are obtained for electron production in helium by 5- to 100-keV proton impact. The measured values along with earlier data at higher energies are compared with theoretical plane-wave Born-approximation functions obtained from a Hartree-Fock potential. Not only is good agreement obtained at high impact energies (above 300 keV), but fairly good agreement is found at low energies (below about 20 keV). For electrons ejected in the backward hemisphere, unexpectedly poor agreement is noted at intermediate energies where the measured cross sections dip to 50% of the calculated values in some cases. Singly differential …

Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair Jan 1976

Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The speed of classification of six alternative ink colors into two categories of three colors each was measured in tasks for which the colors were displayed as either XXXX patterns or incongruent words (Stroop stimuli). Substantial interference from the words occurred when the classification required grouping nonadjacent hues (red, yellow, and blue vs. orange, green, and purple) regardless of whether subjects received exclusive practice with this classification. Interference also occurred when the classification required grouping adjacent hues (red, orange, and yellow vs. green, blue, and purple), but only if this classification was intermixed within blocks of trials with the nonadjacent …

Simplified Rbe-Dose Calculations For Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz, B. G. Fullerton Jr., R. A. Roth, S. C. Sharma

Robert Katz Publications

A problem for radiobiology, radiation protection and treatment planning is the calculation of RBE as a function of the delivered dose when this dose is a result of a mixture of low and high LET radiations, as for neutron and pion beams. Track structure theory (Katz and Sharma, 1975) has recently been used to produce an algorithm for calculating survival, RBE, and OER as a function of dose in such environments. This simple formulation is based on the concept of irradiation equivalence (Katz et al., 1972) through which the effect of a mixed radiation environment is calculated as if it …

Review Of The Oligocene Cetacea, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Albert E. Sanders Jan 1976

Review Of The Oligocene Cetacea, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Albert E. Sanders

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Early in the Oligocene Epoch, Cetacea of the primitive suborder Archaeoceti had already declined sharply from their apparent abundance in Eocene seas. By the beginning of the Miocene, archaeocetes are known to have survived only in the northeast Atlantic and southwest Pacific Oceans. Concurrently with this decline, the first members of the suborders Odontoceti and Mysticeti appeared. They are known from only a few specimens, mostly in upper Oligocene deposits, on both coasts of North America, in Germany, Austria, Italy, the Caucasus, Azerbaijan, Australia, and New Zealand. Two important odontocete genera, Agorophius and Xenorophus, come from beds that are …

The Impact Of Computer Generated Information On The Choice Activity Of Decision-Makers, Fred Luthans, Robert Koester Jan 1976

The Impact Of Computer Generated Information On The Choice Activity Of Decision-Makers, Fred Luthans, Robert Koester

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Computerized information systems have a tremendous impact on management decision-making in all modern organizations. Electronic data processing (EDP) departments generate, coordinate, and disseminate much of the information that is used in modern management decision-making. How much influence is this computer generated information per se having on the choice activity of the human decision-maker? To date, very little is known about the answer to this question. Yet, if management is to improve the effectiveness of the decision-making process, the implications of computer generated information must be better understood. Organizationally, there is evidence that the computer has changed traditionalline- staff relationships. In …

Genetic Regulation Of Flavonoid Content In Seeds And Seedlings Of Melilotus Alba, James E. Specht, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Jan 1976

Genetic Regulation Of Flavonoid Content In Seeds And Seedlings Of Melilotus Alba, James E. Specht, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Chemical analysis of seeds and seedlings of the CC and cc genotypes in Melilotus alba indicated that these alleles affect flavonoid biosynthesis. The CC seed coats contained orientin and iso-orientin, which were absent in the cc seed coats. The pigment responsible for the red pigmentation of young seedlings of CC genotypes was a cyanidin glycoside. The embryos of seeds of both the CC and cc genotypes contained a flavonoid tentatively identified as a 6,8-di-C-pentosylapigenin. The observation that 3',4'-dihydroxyflavonoids were absent in the cc genotype and that 4'-hydroxyflavonoids were present in both genotypes indicated that the C/c alleles controlled the 3'-hydroxylation …

We started our program in 1967 primarily because of an economic problem in the downtown area of Wichita. We had about eight square blocks of businesses which were not getting any business because people didn't dare go downtown in the evening unless they wore their rain hats and rain gear, and I mean this literally.

Raccoon Damage Control, W. Alan Wentz Dec 1975

Raccoon Damage Control, W. Alan Wentz

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Raccoons are found throughout the United States, and in most cases they are expanding their range into previously unoccupied habitats. Raccoons are often water-associated, but in the Great Plains they often occur a considerable distance from the water. In the Great Plains states, the expansion of agriculture has apparently allowed raccoons to move westward and northward. It is possible that the availability of old homesteads, buildings, haystacks, dumps, and towns has been instrumental in allowing raccoons to survive the winter.
