Heg77-78 It's About Time, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue Jan 1977

Heg77-78 It's About Time, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide looks at a simple time management system.

An unusual resource each of us has is time. It's unusual because you can't save it for tomorrow, you can't borrow today some you had left over yesterday, you can't lend it to someone else, you can't leave it behind, you can't take it with you.

You can do only two things with time; use it now or lose it forever.

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to speak this morning to this dynamic group of young farm families. Those of .us who were actively involved in farming a few years back are continually amazed at the talent that has come along" to succeed us. Farming has indeed changed more than we realize. That is not a new discovery, for thousands of articles have been written about the technological revolution in agriculture. But relatively little attention has been given to the change in farm families themselves. without doubt, the quality level of young farmers and their wives - whether it be …

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Until that now famous series of Russian grain sales took place in 1972 agricultural policy in the United States had begun to lose its sex appeal! It had its challenges in the drought and depression years of the '30s, and again during World War II, but in both those cases the concern was whether we could produce enough for our needs. In the earlier of those decades, we had an additional preoccupation with the economic survival of our farming communities. Farm families had to.be strong in every sense of the word to live through the '30s.

Eclipsing Systems In Star Structures. Iii. Early-Type Contact System Bh Centauri, Kam-Ching Leung, Donald P. Schneider

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Close to 1000 photoelectric observations of BH Cen in the yellow, blue, and ultraviolet regions were analyzed. The period found was 0.791616 days. The depths of minima were about equal, and were more than 1 magnitude! A photometric solution was derived with the Wilson and Devinney model. The binary is an overcontact system with primary and secondary masses equal to 10 M?. Based on its membership in IC 2944 and the size of the primary radius, BH Cen may be another example of a zero-age contact system.

G77-328 Irrigation Water Quality Criteria, Gary W. Hergert, Delno Knudsen Jan 1977

G77-328 Irrigation Water Quality Criteria, Gary W. Hergert, Delno Knudsen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide is intended to provide guidelines to help understand and interpret chemical water quality test results.

All well and stream waters contain dissolved minerals. The amounts and kinds of minerals vary from one location to another and may vary with time. When irrigation water is applied, the mineral salts are left in the soil after the crop has used the water. Most of these mineral salts are beneficial to crop growth and soil condition, but in some cases they may be harmful. Irrigation water quality problems may be caused by (1) total mineral salts accumulating so that crops no …

G77-339 Price Spreads For Beef And Pork, Allen C. Wellman Jan 1977

G77-339 Price Spreads For Beef And Pork, Allen C. Wellman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The price spreads for beef and pork are determined by calculating the differences between prices at three marketing levels: farm (live animals), wholesale (carcass or wholesale cuts), and retail (average of retail cuts). Three price spreads, farm-wholesale, wholesale-retail, and farm-retail can be estimated from these prices. Farm-to-retail price spreads for beef and pork represent the total marketnig charges for processing and distribution from farm gate through retail counter and are discussed in this NebGuide.

Heg77-76 Pressing Methods (Revised April 1981), Thelma Thompson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses pressing methods that will not mar or distort the fabric.

A skillful job of pressing requires time, practice and the use of methods that will not mar the fabric. Pressing should not make the fabric shine, flatten the pile or nap, or distort the texture or weave.

Pressing is not ironing. In ironing, the iron is pushed from one spot to another in an unbroken motion to remove wrinkles. In pressing, the iron is lifted up and set down in a particular spot to flatten or shape small areas. To prevent the fabric from stretching, do not …

G77-355 A Guide For The Control Of Flies In Nebraska Feedlots And Dairies (Revised March 1990), John B. Campbell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Flies, especially stable and house flies, can create serious and costly problems for feedlot and dairy operations. This publication describes several methods for control.

Several species of flies may be in confined livestock facilities during summer. The stable and house fly are the most serious pests. Blow flies also may be present if molasses is in the diet. Horn flies--small blood-feeding flies--may be present in early spring. These flies overwinter as pupae in or near manure pats in range or pasture. If cattle are not present in the grassland when horn flies emerge, they will migrate to confinement cattle. Normally, …

Vibriosis In Fish, G. L. Bullock Jan 1977

Vibriosis In Fish, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Fish vibriosis is a systemic disease of marine, estuarine, and some freshwater fishes, caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio (Ross et al. 1968, Ghittino et al. 1972). The disease has been known for centuries; outbreaks along the Italian coast were recorded as early as the 1500's. Terms such as "red pest," "red boil," "red plague," or "saltwater furunculosis" have been applied to vibrio infections, but vibriosis is a more specific term and is now used by most fishery workers. With the rapid development of mariculture, vibriosis has become a major cause of fish loss--sometimes to the extent of being …

Upland Nesting Of American Bitterns, Marsh Hawks, And Short-Eared Owls, Harold F. Duebbert, John T. Lokemoen Jan 1977

Upland Nesting Of American Bitterns, Marsh Hawks, And Short-Eared Owls, Harold F. Duebbert, John T. Lokemoen

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Nests of American Bitterns (Botaurus lentiginosus), marsh hawks (Circus cyaneus), and short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) are usually found in wetland habitats. Although large marshes containing dense stands of bulrushes (Scirpus), cattails (Typha), or other wetland vegetation are favored nesting cover, these birds have also been reported to nest in stands of tall, dense shrubs and grasses on the upland (Bent 1961, 1963; Palmer 1962; Sealy 1967; Stewart 1975). During 1968-74, we regularly found upland nests of these three species while conducting duck nesting studies in planted fields of undisturbed grass-legume …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide looks at the steps necessary for a bill to become a law in Nebraska.

The legislative process sometimes seems to be clothed in an aura of mystery. An understanding of the organization of the governing body and the steps involved in the introduction and passage of a bill should help remove some of the mystery.

A bill is an idea for a new law, or an idea to abolish or change an existing law.

Several hundred bills, ideas about many things, enter the legislative process in Nebraska each time the legislature meets.

G77-363 Vitamin Requirements Of Beef Cattle, Paul Q. Guyer Jan 1977

G77-363 Vitamin Requirements Of Beef Cattle, Paul Q. Guyer

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Vitamins are organic substances that are required in very small quantities for various metabolic functions. Twenty-five to 30 have been identified, but cattle can synthesize all that are needed of these vitamins in the rumen except for two or three. Even though the supplemental amounts needed of these two or three vitamins (A and possibly D and E) are quite small, a deficiency can have a drastic effect on the animal. The NebGuide discusses these effects.

The Rainbow Trout In The North Platte Valley, Rod Van Velson Jan 1977

The Rainbow Trout In The North Platte Valley, Rod Van Velson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

LAKE McCONAUGHY is the only Great Plains reservoir that supports a self-sustaining rainbow trout population. This unique rainbow population lives during the spring, summer and fall in Lake McConaughy and spawns during the winter in tributary streams of the North Platte River in the Scottsbluff area. The Game and Parks Commission was concerned because not enough information was available to properly manage the rainbow trout population under increased fishing pressure. During the mid-1960's a study was initiated to collect information and prepare a rainbow trout management plan for the upper North Platte River drainage. This publication is part of that …
