Seeing The Strange: Science Fiction, Critical Pedagogy, And Future Teachers, Jeremy Delamarter Dec 2024

Seeing The Strange: Science Fiction, Critical Pedagogy, And Future Teachers, Jeremy Delamarter

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Critical pedagogy, which is the branch of critical theory devoted to uncovering hidden power differentials in educational settings, is too often taught in abstract terms, and future educators fail to understand its relevance to praxis in their future classrooms. As a genre, science fiction is particularly adept at helping students consider the power structures and dynamics occasioned by scientific advances. Even more specifically, science-fiction is a powerful tool for teaching future educators the fundamentals of critical pedagogy. This article provides a philosophical exploration of why science fiction is such a useful tool for teaching critical pedagogy and uses the specific …

Transformative Subjects: Discussions Of Nahualismo In Mylan Nguyễn’S Visual Art And Gloria Anzaldúa’S Writings, Sara Ishii-Bear

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Mylan Nguyễn is a Dallas-based artist of Mexican and Vietnamese descent, who uses her multimedia practice, inclusive of ceramics, risograph printing, and illustration, to create whimsical worlds that are infused with symbolism and characterized by transformation. Inspired by the concepts of Nahualismo, a Nahuatl cultural practice that involves human to animal shapeshifting, Nguyễn’s works are populated by shape-shifting humans, animals, and nature. Drawing on a Nahualismo perspective that emphasizes healing and interconnectivity, Nguyễn’s understanding of the concept aligns with Gloria Anzaldúa’s discussion of nagualismo. Coupling Nahualismo and creativity, both Nguyễn and Anzaldúa invite audiences to bridge the divide between humans …

Two Birds, Two Stones: Separating Biodiversity Conservation From Patent Law, Jessie Sadlon Dec 2024

Two Birds, Two Stones: Separating Biodiversity Conservation From Patent Law, Jessie Sadlon

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

The current decline in biodiversity is faster than any other point in human history.[1] Overexploitation is the leading driver of biodiversity loss; species are harvested at unreplenishable rates. Government, non-government, and industry representatives are searching for direction in addressing this rapid species loss. In particular, the World Intellectual Property Organization (“WIPO”) is looking to channel biodiversity conservation through patent systems by instituting an origin disclosure requirement within the patent application process. This paper explores the intersection of biodiversity and innovation, contending the origin disclosure requirement is an unjustified, ineffective mechanism to effectuate biodiversity conservation.

Part II describes the biodiversity crisis …

Chilling- And Dark-Regulated Photoprotection In Miscanthus, An Economically Important C4 Grass, Jared Haupt, Katarzyna Glowacka Dec 2024

Chilling- And Dark-Regulated Photoprotection In Miscanthus, An Economically Important C4 Grass, Jared Haupt, Katarzyna Glowacka

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Tolerance of chilling dictates the geographical distribution, establishment, and productivity of C4 crops. Chilling reduces enzyme rate, limiting the sink for the absorbed light energy leading to the need for quick energy dissipation via non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Here, we characterize NPQ upon chilling in three Miscanthus accessions representing diverse chilling tolerance in C4 grasses. High chilling tolerant accessions accumulate substantial amounts of zeaxanthin during chilling nights in both field and growth chamber settings. Chilling-induced zeaxanthin accumulation in the dark enhances rate of NPQ induction by 66% in the following morning. Based on our data, the emerging ways for the unique …

Analysis Of Natural Structures And Chemical Mapping Data Reveals Local Stability Compensation In Rna, Robert L. Cornwell-Arquitt, Riley Nigh, Michael T. Hathaway, Joseph D. Yesselman, David A. Hendrix

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

RNA molecules adopt complex structures that perform essential biological functions across all forms of life, making them promising candidates for therapeutic applications. However, our ability to design new RNA structures remains limited by an incomplete understanding of their folding principles. While global metrics such as the minimum free energy are widely used, they are at odds with naturally occurring structures and incompatible with established design rules. Here, we introduce local stability compensation (LSC), a principle that RNA folding is governed by the local balance between destabilizing loops and their stabilizing adjacent stems, challenging the focus on global energetic optimization. Analysis …

The Utilization Of Alcohol Dehydrogenase (Adh) Enzymes In Stereocontrolled Synthesis, Gaurav Pramod Kudalkar Dec 2024

The Utilization Of Alcohol Dehydrogenase (Adh) Enzymes In Stereocontrolled Synthesis, Gaurav Pramod Kudalkar

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Clostridium acetobutylicum alcohol dehydrogenase (CaADH) has been shown to catalyze the stereoselective reduction of a broad array of carbonyl compounds. This study uses a Hammett linear free-energy relationship (LFER) analysis to gain insight into CaADH enzyme mechanism across three substrate classes: aryl aldehydes, aryl β-keto esters, and aryl trifluoromethyl ketones. Kinetic data were collected by monitoring NADPH fluorescence, and Michaelis-Menten kinetics were applied. Hammett plots reveal that hydride transfer is rate-limiting for aldehydes and β-keto esters (ρ > 0), while it is proposed that dehydration is rate-limiting for trifluoromethyl ketones (ρ < 0). 13C NMR confirmed significant hydration in trifluoromethyl ketones. The …

Spatial Ecology Of Large Bodied Ichthyofauna In The Red River Of The North Basin, William Marshall Stuart

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Understanding spatial patterns and processes is essential for designing research studies, implementing management actions, and planning restoration efforts. The Red River of the North basin spans a broad geographic area where jurisdictional oversight is divided among several entities (Manitoba, CAN; North Dakota, USA; Minnesota, USA; South Dakota, USA), creating a mosaic of regulatory and functional process zones. Understanding the spatial ecology of freshwater fishes in this disjointed landscape is essential to address diverse life history requirements and the movement constraints imposed by anthropogenic structures. Long-term acoustic telemetry revealed that large bodied ichthyofauna employ a diverse range of movement strategies (i.e., …

Impact Of Irrigation Systems On Water Use And Water Productivity: A Case Study Using Aquacrop In Khartoum, Sudan, Abdalhakam Almagzoop

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Masters Project Reports

Water scarcity significantly challenges agricultural productivity in arid regions like Khartoum, Sudan. This study evaluates the impact of three irrigation systems—furrow, sprinkler, and surface drip—on the water use and productivity of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) under different climatic conditions using the AquaCrop model. Simulations were conducted for three representative years: a wet year (2022), a normal year (2015), and a dry year (2018). The results demonstrate that irrigation substantially improved water use efficiency and crop yield compared to non-irrigated (rainfed) conditions. Rainfed crops resulted in lower biomass, harvest index, and yield, particularly in the dry year, highlighting the importance …

Enhancing Water Sustainability In North Africa: Literature Review And Synthesis Of Current Knowledge Gaps In Sudan, Osman M. A. Adam

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Masters Project Reports

This study delves into the critical role of groundwater in addressing global water challenges, with a focus on the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) in north Africa. Groundwater constitutes a source of potable water, irrigation, and industrial use, especially in arid regions where surface water is limited. We analyzed the status of water quantity, withdrawals, recharge, and geological characteristics in the NSAS, specifically in Sudan, Egypt, and Libya. Though the NSAS is largely an untapped resource, water withdrawals from the NSAS in Egypt, Sudan, and Libya are projected to increase substantially from 2000 to 2100 due to population growth, with …

Dissecting Metabolic Landscape Of Alveolar Macrophage, Sunayana Malla Dec 2024

Dissecting Metabolic Landscape Of Alveolar Macrophage, Sunayana Malla

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The highly plastic nature of alveolar macrophage (AM) plays a crucial role in the defense against inhaled particulates and pathogens in the lungs. Depending on the signal, AM acquires either the classically activated M1 phenotype or the alternatively activated M2 phenotype. In this study, we investigate the metabolic shift in the activated phases of AM (M1 and M2 phases) by reconstructing context specific genome-scale metabolic (GSM) models. Metabolic pathways such as pyruvate metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, chondroitin/heparan sulfate biosynthesis, and heparan sulfate degradation are found to be important driving forces in the development of the M1/M2 phenotypes. Additionally, we formulated …

First Breeding Confirmation For Red-Breasted Nuthatch (Sitta Canadensis) Along The Big Bend Reach Of The Platte River, Jacob C. Cooper, Cody Mcgregor, Letitia M. Reichart, Janet Steele

Nebraska Bird Review

The Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) is a highly nomadic species of North American nuthatch prone to large movements across the entire continent (Ghalambor and Martin 2020). This behavior has resulted in both a lack of geographic variation across the continent and propensity to colonize isolated patches of suitable habitat (Ghalambor and Martin 2020). In the Bessey District of the Nebraska National Forest (NNF), Red-breasted Nuthatches were one of the first coniferous-forest bird species to colonize and begin breeding in the isolated planted stands of pine (Zimmer 1913, Bray 1994). Despite the increasing number of records for the species …

Fall Field Report, August–November 2024, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

First off, I should reiterate that records are only mentioned in this Introduction and in the text when they add to or fine-tune data included in BONO (Birds of Nebraska – Online (outdoornebraska.gov). It was my expectation that as the number of birders and in particular those reporting to eBird continue to increase, gaps in the database will be filled and my job will become simpler. However, this expectation is yet to be realized, likely due to increasing movements and activity among birds that appears to be due to increasing severity of weather events, such as heat, cold, and drought, …

Scavenging As An Accelerant In The Postmortem Interval Estimate: Refining Quantitative Regressions For Decomposition Analyses In Southeast Nebraska, Jenna L. Alexander

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

In forensic anthropology, the postmortem interval (PMI) is an estimation of the time elapsed from the moment of death to the point of discovery or examination. Contemporary approaches for estimating PMI have sought to refine broad quantitative regressions by addressing variance among intrinsic and extrinsic influences of decomposition at a regional level. Southeast Nebraska and the broader Great Plains region encompass one of the most influential agricultural ecosystems, featuring a unique climate type and a diverse spectrum of vertebrate scavengers. While there has been minimal research addressing how the biogeoclimatic conditions of Nebraska affect predicted estimates for PMI using known …

Soybean Seed Yield Distribution Within The Canopy As Affected By Nitrogen Supply, Lucia Bonfanti Dec 2024

Soybean Seed Yield Distribution Within The Canopy As Affected By Nitrogen Supply, Lucia Bonfanti

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed yield is influenced by the seasonal availability of resources (i.e., nutrients, light, and water). While nitrogen (N) supply is becoming a soybean yield-limiting factor, the N-induced effect in seed yield components is still unclear. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of N supply on soybean yield components distribution within the canopy. A Full-N treatment, which provided the crop with ample N supply, was compared against a Zero-N treatment in which the crop relied on soil N and biological N fixation at nine high-yielding irrigated soybean environments in Nebraska, with …

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Current metabolomics research is expanding to be multiplatform and interdisciplinary. Metabolomic analysis has the potential to provide detailed insight into any biological system of interest to analyze the underlying molecular mechanisms of variables like environment, disease, and genetics. Human clinical metabolomics is a major research area that is often focused on finding biomarkers or panels of biomarkers for different diseases. However, results are difficult to compare across different laboratories since the field of metabolomics has yet to widely adopt best practices for sample preparation, data acquisition and data processing, results are difficult to compare across different laboratories.

This thesis focuses …

Microbiome Variation In Production Phenotypes And The Role Of Colonization History In Microbiome Establishment, Seidu Adams

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Ruminant-based agriculture is expected to continue to be a major contributor to food security to feed the growing population. At the heart of nutrient degradation of complex organic matter within the rumen are its microbes. These microbes can convert otherwise unusable organic matter into usable protein and energy and can provide up to 50% of the animal’s protein needs and up to 70% of the energy needs. The microbial functional capacity within the rumen determines the nutrients utilized and the end products of fermentation. However, our understanding of microbial functional capacity within the rumen and factors that influence the rumen …

Domain-Specific Machine Learning Approaches For Geospatial Problems, Shine Bedi

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation explores novel algorithms for complex geospatial problems at the intersection of environmental, social, and computational sciences. Emphasizing the unique challenges of the geospatial domain, particularly the deviation from the independent and identical distribution (IID) assumption, the research spans various methodologies across different domains, demonstrating the benefits of specialized approaches in spatial analysis.

First, we show that machine learning techniques can be effectively used in environmental modeling, which often has severe class imbalance challenges. Using artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB) and techniques to address class imbalance provides insights into groundwater quality …

Nitrogen Limitation In Soybean: Physiology And Diagnosis, Luzviminda Ann Ramos Sazon Dec 2024

Nitrogen Limitation In Soybean: Physiology And Diagnosis, Luzviminda Ann Ramos Sazon

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

In high-yield soybean environments, the seed yield is limited by nitrogen (N) supply. However, the response of soybean to N fertilizer application is inconsistent. Understanding the seasonal N uptake dynamics in soybean can provide insights on diagnosing N limitation if soybean. To understand soybean N dynamics, we assessed seasonal trends on dry matter and N accumulation in vegetative organs (leaves, stems, and petioles) from 42 field experiments. Each experiment included a ‘zero-N’ treatment, where crops relied on N supply from soil and biological N fixation (BNF), and a ‘full-N’ that received ample N via N fertilizer addition. Vegetative storage proteins …

Understanding And Intervening In Children's Tick Risk Perceptions And Protective Behaviors: A Grounded Theory, Ariel Dawdy Dec 2024

Understanding And Intervening In Children's Tick Risk Perceptions And Protective Behaviors: A Grounded Theory, Ariel Dawdy

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Children, ages 8 years and younger, are at a particularly high risk of contracting a tick-borne disease. This is partially due to the misconceptions spread about tick protective behavior and a poor understanding of how antibiotic treatment can help. Because most communities and families believe that tick control is the individual’s responsibility, looking at the interaction between ticks and human children is essential to understanding the individual’s motivations to protect themselves. To help alleviate the number of individuals contracting tick-borne diseases, misconceptions must be addressed, intervention programs implemented, and a behavioral change must occur. This study used a qualitative research …

Soybean Cyst Nematode (Heterodera Glycines Ichinohe) Virulence Assay Against Resistance Sources In Nebraska, Pratibha Karki

Department of Plant Pathology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe), one of the major yield-limiting pathogens of soybean, is currently found in 60 counties of Nebraska that produce more than 90% of the state’s soybean. Often, yield loss occurs without any above-ground symptoms, which makes it difficult to manage. The primary management option is the use of SCN-resistant varieties. Several soybean plant introductions serve as resistance sources against SCN. Unfortunately, the single source, PI 88788, is used in approximately 90% of resistant varieties and its prolonged use has increased the virulence status of SCN in the U.S. A study was conducted to assess …

Analysis Of Impulsive Differential Equation Models Of Cell Populations Undergoing Radiation Therapy, Abigail D'Ovidio Long Dec 2024

Analysis Of Impulsive Differential Equation Models Of Cell Populations Undergoing Radiation Therapy, Abigail D'Ovidio Long

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Radiation therapy is a mode of treatment which is implemented for approximately 50% of cancer patients. Treatment needs to be able to kill cancer cells, but also do minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. We propose two main impulsive differential equation models of radiation therapy to capture the periodic nature of the treatment. These models build off of previous studies using clinical data to ensure biological relevance. The first model incorporates only cancer cell populations, and we provide parameter relationships which theoretically ensure treatment outcomes of cancer eradication, cancer approaching a carrying capacity, and cancer approaching a periodic solution. We …
