Avian Botulism Information On Earlier Research

Over the years, the disease, avian botulism, has been an important factor limiting populations of waterfowl, particularly in the West. Great numbers (doubtless millions) of ducks have died from this disease, and because of such heavy tolls, studies of the malady were begun early in the century and continued intermittently to the present time.

This summary brings up to 1950 the series of investigations on botulism by Wetmore (1918), Kalmbach (1930, 1932), Kalmbach and Gunderson (1934), Sperry (1947), and others. This information has been compiled as a service to those concerned with conservation of our waterfowl resources. A cooperative agreement …

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

A method has been devised by Weaver and his coworkers (15) by which a root system may be sampled from the soil surface to a depth of maximum root penetration. The root system may then be separated from the soil without vertical displacement, photographed, and compared with soil profile characteristics. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to relate some chemical and physical properties of the soil to root distribution.

It was shown recently that the poky strain of Neurospora accumulates large amounts of cytochrome c, but is deficient in cytochromes a and b and thus in cytochrome oxidase and succinic acid oxidase activities (1). These findings, which suggest that respiration in poky does not utilize the cytochrome system, led to a study of the respiratory system of poky compared with that of wild type. Recent investigations in this laboratory (1) have demonstrated that in Neurospora crassa growth characteristics representing at least two stable states are possible with the same constitution of nuclear genes. If a slow growing strain, designated poky, functions in a cross to wild type as the "maternal" or protoperithecial parent, then all progeny from the cross exhibit the poky character. If the cross is made in the reverse, or reciprocal manner, that is, with the wild type strain functioning as a protoperithecial parent, then all progeny are normal in growth rate.

Concerning The Site Of Nitrogen Absorption In Rats Fed Autoclaved Or Raw Soybean Oil Mea, Raymond Borchers

Carroll, Hensley, and Graham (1) have concluded that much of the nitrogen absorption in rats fed raw soybean oil meal must take place in the cecum. This conclusion was reached from data showing that the apparent digestibility of raw soybean nitrogen in the terminal 20% of the small intestine was 32.65%, whereas in the feces the value was 76.96%. Values reported, for apparent digestibility of heated soybean nitrogen were 78.66% and 81.78%, respectively. This observation presented a notable advance in explaining the lower nutritive value of raw soybeans compared with autoclaved soybeans. It therefore seemed advisable to repeat this work …

A survey of the helminth parasites of Alaskan rodents has been carried on by the writer since the winter of 1948-1949, as a continuation of an investigation begun in the central United States in 1942. Results of this work indicate that, despite the size of the Territory of Alaska, the survey is complete enough to furnish a reasonable knowledge of the species of helminths parasitic in microtine rodents in Alaska. Information derived from previous investigations serves as a standard against which the completeness of the present work may be judged. In the writer's opinion, the continuation of this work on …

A Montana newspaperman and writer, Howard had been impressed by the amazing far-sightedness of Powell's report, published in 1878, on the arid lands of the West. At the time I was preparing a report of my own for a Rockefeller Foundation research project in the humanities. Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

In 1948 the insect collections at the University of Nebraska State Museum were placed in the care of the author. Prior to that date curatorial duties were assumed or assigned to full time teaching or research staff members. As would be expected under the latter circumstances, the organization of study material and types was neglected in many families and genera. Since 1948 type material, because of its intrinsic value, has received considerable attention. All primary and representative secondary types have been assembled in three museum cases and one slide cabinet for curatorial and study convenience.

There is continued need for a better understanding of range vegetation and its use by range animals. Range preservation and improvement in the midwest are largely matters of wise use and proper management of our natural grasslands. A more comprehensive understanding of the range itself is needed--its forage, soil, and water supply, and factors influencing a proper distribution of livestock. The degree of utilization of forage that will result in the maintenance of excellent or good range condition and the improvement of a range in fair condition should be ascertained. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

It is the purpose of this paper to report the effects of thermal-neutron irradiation of maize and barley kernels on subsequent germination, plant establishment, and early plant development. Comparisons are made with equivalent neutron treatments of maize pollen, results of which have been reported in part in previous publications.

In 1951, Army Medical Service (AMS) was the technical service that provided medical supplies, equipment, and services to the army. Like all of the technical services, the AMS was responsible for intelligence in its field of expertise. The chief of the AMS was The Surgeon General, US Army, and his headquarters was the Office of The Surgeon General (OSG) in Washington. The OSG was part of the Headquarters, Department of the Army.

A staff section within the OSG was the top level army medical intelligence production organization.

BLACK et al. (1948) have published electron micrographs of bodies believed to represent the New York variety of potato yellow-dwarf virus (Aureogenus vastans (H) Black) (Holmes 1948). The photographs showed bodies in several different extracts of infected plants of Nicotiana rustica L., but not in corresponding preparations from healthy plants. Similar bodies were found in concentrates from plants infected with the New Jersey variety of the virus (var. agalliae Black). These bodies were larger than, and of a different character from, those of plant viruses hitherto examined in the electron microscope. The present study was undertaken to obtain evidence …

Biotic interrelationships in Alaska have so far suffered little from man's attempts to improve upon nature. As a result of these favorable circumstances, biological investigation in Alaska offers unusual opportunity for elucidating problems which can no longer be approached in the more populated parts of North America. One is very fortunate to have the opportunity of working under these conditions, since present trends indicate that Alaska is soon to go by the way of the great wildernesses which once existed in the United States and Canada.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The chief purpose of these studies has been to determine the normal growth changes that occur in the corn plant at successive intervals when growing in the field, and to observe annual yield variations in relation to prevailing weather conditions. Aside from supplying information regarding the physiology of this crop, the data are of interest to the corn grower because they indicate comparative yields, shelling percentages, moisture contents, and feed constituents at various stages of development. Some data also are presented concerning the effects of frost, drouth, day length, and the economic value of tillers and seminal roots.
